I used to play DPS Sombra, so maybe there’s some bias there? If that's what you want to call it. But I honestly think she’s really boring now. On paper or in theory, she seems like the kind of hero I would enjoy, but after the nerfs to her gun and her longer cooldowns, I haven’t played her much. Even before those changes, though, she felt boring.
First of all, I think her Translocator is clunky. I still haven’t gotten used to the timing; it just feels awkward to use. Whether that was intentional to punish players trying to use her kit proactively, I’m not sure. Her gun feels awful. It was okay before the nerfs, but now it’s laughable. Hacking teammates feels very fluid and is probably the best feeling part of her kit, but Cyberspace simply has way too much power packed into it.
Sombra mirrors are the absolute most boring matchup because whichever Sombra saves her bubble to peel wins. It’s completely unfun, just like a Mauga mirror where whoever shouts last wins. Making the cooldown longer instead of nerfing the 50% damage reduction, which was the one thing everyone assumed would get hit, is certainly a choice. I’m sure the devs know what they’re doing; they get paid the big bucks after all, so clearly the rest of us are just wrong.
With all that said, her kit basically plays like a higher APM Brig now. You hold angles, hack your DPS, and maybe take a short flank with them, but you never hard commit because you lack solo kill potential unless the enemy team is completely clueless. Using your Translocator to escape from their backline will get you killed nine times out of ten.
I played Sombra because I liked flanking and applying pressure from off angles. While you technically still can do that, you barely can, because her kit rewards passive, reactive play far more than using a 13 or 14 second cooldown aggressively, especially with Translocator feeling this bad. If I want to flank, I’m just going to pick Cat or Moira. Sombra isn't a flanker anymore; she's an anti dive hero who can occasionally go on a minor flank with a teammate when the conditions are just right. Moira and Cat don't need stars to align; they can just go do it. It feels bad.
She's in almost every game right now, and whenever I try diving as a DPS or tank, enemy Sombras are getting really good at just waiting invisible in their backline and dropping that 50% damage reduction bubble, completely nullifying my play. Really fun design, guys.
Anyway, this entire rework seems designed to appeal to support players rather than actual Sombra players, which is disappointing. It honestly feels like they reworked a hero without the hero's actual player base in mind at all.
