Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?

We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.

That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.

What Counts as Solo Development?

A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.

What is Allowed?

  • Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
  • Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
  • Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
  • Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
  • Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.

What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit

If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.

Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.

TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Discussion Tripo AI is false advertising, and claiming ownership over assets made by indie publishers.

Post image
421 Upvotes

Im posting on behalf of the owner of the artwork / assets. For some reason, he is unable to post a thread due to Reddit's auto filtering.

Here are his words:

"Just was informed that the AI 3D Modeling company Tripo AI used my 3D environment art in a recent post on X and claimed that Astra and Tripo were able to "build this Zelda-styled environment for me" even though that's my exact environment demo map available on Fab, under the name "Stylized Nature Vol. 2 | Stylized Environment Bundle" created without ai. (released 2 years ago)

I feel like most people know these companies are kind of shady and scammy but seeing them outright lie like that just seemed silly and I wanted to get a bit of exposure out there about it. I tried to post on the Tripo and Gamedev subs but my posts were removed from both. Is this just common? Have you seen similar experiences with Tripo AI and other 3D modelers?"

You can see the exact same environment 1:1 (The image of this post). This screenshot is taken from his asset packs showcase video

help A game based on weather simulations - is this a dumb idea?

So, as someone who dabbles in a lot of data and a weird fascination with meteorology, I decided to create a weather sim game as a proof of concept.

It runs through different weather scans like radar, rain trail, satellite, and etc and the basis of it is that you're a weather man, and you have to make the right call whether or it can have an impact on lives and the damage on property. You earn reputation points, but also, it can take a hit based on the mistakes you make.

I'm not a professional game developer by any means, but would be good if this I'm on the right path or not.

Game 6 years developing games as a hobby and I've finally published my Steam page!

Hi!

I'm a software and game developer from Belgium and I've announced Malsort 2 days ago.

Since 2021 I've spent my weekends building an MMO backend. I started Malsort because Diablo II is my favourite game (along with Dofus) and I've always wanted a world that stays when you log out: a town full of other players, player-based economy (Dofus really shines there), and world bosses the whole server fights together.

Right now there are 7 classes with skill trees, ARPG loot, player stalls in town, parties and a world boss (more to come, of course!).

Early Access is planned for 2027. The Steam link is in the comments (a wishlist or follow really helps!).

Do you have any advice for a fellow dev? How is your wishlist/release going?

Game I have been making a Tabletop Miniature Wargame on PC in my spare time.

Its in pretty early on in development and i just got one of my first models done by an artist.

So i thought i would show it here. I love warhammer and playing the tabletop but i cant play as much as i would like to since im always travelling. Thats why i decided wouldnt it be fun to create a Tabletop game on PC where you can buy miniatures build them, kitbash them, Paint them to your liking and then play with them with friends or with random matchmaking.

I want to add gamemodes like team battles and such as well. Im really passionate about this and it has been a blast to make it i have so many ideas. What i especially like is there are stats to each model they can get awards for doing something impressive in the game and they can even be promoted to Veteran and then later on to a Character. So if you have a favourite model you can literally turn it into a character.

I love this idea and i have been making some progress so i wanted to show it. I love playing it i dont know if others will find it fun but i geniuenly love it.

I dont know what else to say i dont have a steam page yet and i will not have one for some time for now since im limited by the model count for release i want around 14 models which is a lot of money per model but thats what you get if you want to get quality.

I have been making games for some time this game making it while working on other games brought me a lot of joy. Its honestly so freeing when you can work on something you really love that just makes it so much better than working for money even if i end up losing money by the end. I dont mind it is a passion project you could say.

Discussion How do you finishing a project as a solo dev?

When I started my project, it was all about the idea, every day a new feature, a new mechanic. It’s amazing to see your game coming together.

I’m pretty close to the finish line, but after a year of development now, when it comes to marketing and finalization I feel burned out, exhausted.

I do my project as a hobby, after work, after the family is asleep.

I’m *this close to abandon it though as feedback is scarce and wishlists are refusing to come in.

How do you deal with all that?

Hello everyone!

I’m SJ, a solo creator from England!

For the last year I have hand drawn my own cozy pixel game, which has just launched on Kickstarter!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/s-j/the-spirit-apprentice-east-asian-fantasy-rpg

As a indie developer I have no marketing budget or publisher… so your support means the world! We’ve already hit 30% of the goal and any support be it sharing with freinds, pledging or just engaging with this post means everything to me!

The Spirit Apprentice, inspired by East Asian folklore and the magic of Studio Ghibli is a cozy RPG. You'll explore the village of Moshu, learn magic, form contracts with spirits, and get to know the mysterious villagers.

Hello, so I changed the boss of the reptilian level in my game a few weeks before release.
Am I too insane to risk my project like this ? Not like I plan on earning anything with this lmao but I'm having the time of my life developing it.

Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Game Hard Landing - Alpha Scorpii

For reference, this ship is larger than a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. Damage isn't currently modeled.

This is the Gryphon. It's a cargo class of ship that will be used in my orbital flight and survival simulator. The game exists in the Antares system, otherwise known as Alpha Scorpii, The Heart of Scorpio. It's a binary star system with a dying supermassive red giant, Antares A, and a brilliant and hot main sequence blue star.

The game is created in my custom game engine I've been building called Twilight Engine. It's a rust/wgpu-vulkan engine that is highly optimized for simulations.

Game 3 years of evenings after my day job. I just pressed Release on my game, with 300 wishlists and my cat supervising.

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

About three years ago I wanted to find out what a PvP RPG would feel like as a board game. Hex grid, dice, two to four players around a table, except the table is a PC.

I built a rough version and got friends to play it. While we enjoyed the PvP element, what actually stood out was teaming up to take on the monsters together.

I knew the full project would take a while, since I was new to multiplayer game development. It took three years. I have a full-time job and a kid, so Eternally happened in the evenings and at weekends, mostly when I should have been asleep. I've lost count of the hours. Thousands, easily.

A few things I learned the hard way:

  • Multiplayer roughly doubles everything. Every feature has to work for the host and for the other players.
  • Playtesters will tell you what your game is. Mine told me it was a co-op game.
  • Scope sneaks up on you. Four characters turned into over 260 skills - getting creative with one character meant I had to quadruple my work across the board.
  • Marketing is a second job, and I started it far too late. I'm launching with about 300 wishlists. Everything I've read says that's low.

I've made peace with that number. It's a game I wanted to exist, it's finished, and I'm proud of it. If it finds a small group of people who like dice and hex grids, that's a win for me.

It's called Eternally, a dark fantasy tactical RPG. You can play it solo, online with up to 4, or with 2 on one PC. There's a free demo if you want to try it first.

Happy to answer anything about the solo side: Unity multiplayer, fitting it around a job, or what I'd do differently.

Hey everyone! I'm an indie game developer working on my game all by myself, and unfortunately, I don't have a budget for marketing.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone would be willing to give my game a try! If you decide to make a video about it, I'll add your name to the in-game credits as a thank-you.

No pressure at all — even just trying the game would mean a lot to me!

Marketing Numbers from my first 3-month Steam game (700 wishlists, $2,123 gross) and why a small genre event beat Next Fest by 3x

I shipped my first commercial game called Immunica a few months ago after 3 months of solo dev. It's a small Nodebuster style incremental game.

I did almost zero marketing during development (literally 3 shorts and a few tweets) and was sitting at 82 wishlists a month before Next Fest.

Here is how the numbers ended up looking:

  • Tiny Roguelikes event: +474 wishlists in 2 weeks
  • Steam Next Fest: +160 wishlists
  • Wishlists at launch: ~700
  • Sales: 147 in the first 3 days, 234 first week, 895 total so far
  • Revenue: $2,123 gross (~$1,100 net after Steam cut, taxes, refunds)
  • Outstanding Wishlist: 1,081

Biggest surprise for me was Next Fest vs smaller festivals. If you go into Next Fest with ~500 wishlists, you just get buried. Niche genre events convert way better when you're small.

Also a random tip: manually check your Polish pricing on Steam. Steam's default PLN conversion is super high right now. There's a PolishOurPrices movement in Poland and they pointed it out to me on Twitter during launch week, I lowered it, and some posts about it just went viral there. Poland ended up being my #1 market (201 copies sold).

Anyway, I teamed up with an artist friend for my next incremental game Feed The Pond so it doesn't have my programmer art this time, and we put the Steam page up early instead of waiting until the last minute.

Made a quick 5 min video breaking down the launch graphs and showing the new game if anyone wants to check it out: Video

Godot No drawing app: how a Python script draws every sprite of my cozy 16x16 town

I make small 16x16 asset packs. For Cozy Town I skipped the drawing app: every sprite is drawn by a Python script. Some context on how that works, in case it's useful.

  • A sprite is a grid of letters. Each letter is a color from one fixed palette, the same one my farm tileset uses. Code adds rectangles, ellipses and ramps on top.
  • One outline pass puts the same warm 1 px outline around everything, so the town and the farm match.
  • Each building has a day and a night version, with lit windows and doors.
  • Characters are built like paper dolls, frame by frame: legs, torso, arms, head, hair, hat, clothes and whatever they carry.
  • The ground uses 47-piece autotiles. The same run writes the Godot TileSet, the Tiled tilesets and every PNG in 1x, 2x and 4x.

The upside: changing one palette color updates the whole town in one run. The downside: every new object is a small program, so a sofa takes longer than a quick sketch would.

The result is Cozy Town, with a free Lite: https://aquumgifts.itch.io/cozy-town

Happy to answer questions about the workflow :)

Unity I’m developing A Long Flight, a flight simulator featuring a Piper PA-18 — looking for playtesters!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I'm developing a flight simulator called A Long Flight in Unity, and I'm looking for people who would like to test the game and share their feedback.

The game currently features a Piper PA-18 Super Cub, with functional flight controls, a working cockpit, interactive flight instruments, engine sounds, and systems such as throttle, flaps, rudder, and parking brake. You can start the engine, take off, fly around, and practice landing at airports. The game also includes a map, different lighting conditions, and weather effects, including rain on the cockpit windshield.

I'm still developing and improving the game, so it is an early build and may contain bugs or unfinished features. I'd really appreciate feedback on the flight physics, controls, cockpit, graphics, performance, and overall experience.

If you try it, please let me know what works well and what you think should be improved. Thanks for helping an indie developer!

Game I'm making a game where you program bees (and everything is vector graphics)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm making WaxWire: Program the Hive solo in Unity.

You don't control the bees directly. Instead, you give each bee a small program made of nodes, like "find a flower, collect nectar, fly home", and watch it run. As you play, you unlock new nodes, the meadow grows, seasons change, and eventually you can automate the whole hive.

It's mostly inspired by The Farmer Was Replaced, with a bit of Zachtronics. All the art is vector graphics drawn in code, nothing hand-drawn.

This is my first Steam page, so I'd really like to hear what you think of it. Does it make you want to play? Is anything confusing?

If it looks like your kind of game, a wishlist would help a lot.

help A little Disco Elysium inspiration! Need help with style

Post image
3 Upvotes

Context About My Game:

I recently got inspired by Disco Elysium to add some inner monologue for my game, Vampire Salaryman, since I realized a lot of my game is focused on bureaucratic and nocturnal survival and the psyche the player develops along the way.

This particular scene triggers right after the player's first feeding opportunity, and I already have much of the dialogue system coded and branching choices written.

Need Help:

This is a concept picture made with Google Slides that I intend to use a reference for developing the actual scene in Godot. I would like to ask for advice with how to improve the atmosphere, look and the stillness of the scene. I already have the idea for the eyes to move with the mouse. I guess what I need is advice for background, overlays, etc. to make the scene feel more alive and impactful.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Game Solo dev milestone: Built an aerodynamic wingsuit flight game with drivable campus cars and zero pop-in pre-baked terrain

• Upvotes

Hey fellow solo devs! For the past few months I've been solo-developing EXIT POINT on Roblox. My goal was to create a flight experience that treats aerodynamics seriously (real glide ratios, pitch/roll authority, and canopy steer dynamics) rather than standard arcade floatiness.

In our latest release: • Pre-baked the entire terrain and scenery natively to eliminate streaming pop-in during 100+ mph proximity passes. • Designed a custom vehicle factory with ground-pivot kinematics so players can hop into rovers right outside spawn and cruise to jump points. • Added a full multicolor neon night skyline across coastal towers.

Game I dreamed of making games since I was a kid — the demo of my first game is finally out.

Hello folks!

I’m Viktor from Ukraine. I’ve dreamed of making games since I was a kid — and the demo of my first game, Marrowsteel, is now out on Steam.

It’s a roguelite tower defense in a dark sci-fi setting: a biomechanical alien swarm is pushing toward humanity’s last cities, and you’re the one holding the line.

It started as a small 2D Godot project. Pretty soon I realized I can’t do 2D — and I don’t like Godot :)

The idea was to make tower defense feel more grounded. The core mechanic: you upgrade each turret with modules — barrels, ammo, magazines — to adapt your defense to whatever the swarm throws at you.

Game I hope I never wake up from this dream… 650 wishlists in just two weeks!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I still can't quite believe I'm writing this!!

Just two weeks ago, I launched the Steam page for Over Human, a game I've been developing entirely on my own, alongside my full-time job.

I've dreamed of making my own video game since 2013. I've started projects, abandoned them, lost motivation, and wondered more than once whether I'd ever actually manage to finish something.

For those unfamiliar with it, Over Human is a first-person sci-fi adventure set in a snowy world where drones can manipulate the weather, and you have no weapons to fight back.

I recently updated my Steam page, adding GIFs, improving the capsule art, highlighting some of the game's most important mechanics, and localizing the page into multiple languages.

And now, knowing that hundreds of people have seen my little project and decided to add it to their wishlists… that genuinely means the world to me. It's hard to put that feeling into words.

I know there's still a long road ahead. The demo is coming in November, and I'm working hard to make it something people will genuinely enjoy.

I'm not a studio. I don't have a team behind me or a big marketing budget. Just a computer, a lot of late nights, and a dream I've carried with me for over a decade.

For the first time, that dream doesn't feel so far away anymore.

This is the Steam Page if you want to know more about my game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5237810/Over_Human/

Thank you for helping bring my dream to life. <3
