Rant Why are we leaf blowing at 7am????

It's 7am. What property managers are instructing their landscapers to leaf blow for an hour starting at 7am? Just wanna talk.

Edit: I mean, it's 8am but they started at 7 😭 How many leaves can there even be?

Edit edit: omg guys. I didnt realize it was life or death. Thank you for enlightening me.

I also have learned the internet is NOT a space to ever speak negatively and that doing so must inherently make me an absolutely selfish unempathrtic person. I've learned a lot and I'm very grateful. 🙏

Edit two electric boogalo: I'm also anti-homeless and ungrateful for a place to live!! Im learning and growing, guys! Thank you. 🤍

🏰The Last Edit 🦄: I work in property management and understand the nature of being working class, and having a job to do. I understand the citys noise ordinance quiet hours end at 7 am. I understand no matter when you do it, someones mad. Apparently (editception: CITY OWNED) gas leaf blowers will be banned in 2027 (and there will be a study done to consider a full ban). I understand theyre expensive and less powerful. I think landscapers should charge the extra cost back to property management/owners, because, despite the worsening inflation, they took on the risk (and no, rents shouldn't increase because of it.) I understand some people think if the electric blower is not powerful enough, the pile is too big. I think the act of moving leaves around over and over and never actually removing them seems like a waste of time.

I apologize for my sins, and have asked Jesus to forgive me. I appreciate everyones humor and insight. Go hawks, or whatever!

Unfortunately per the city's noise ordinance, they can start 'em up at 7 on weekdays (9 on weekends & holidays). If a landscaper's gonna make the most of their day, they're gonna start blowing somewhere at 7 on the dot. Looks like you drew the short straw.

As a landscaper, we are not adverse to raking leaves. Our clients are adverse to paying us for the time it would take to rake all the leaves so we have to use blowers. My company uses all electric tools for everything. Seattle banned gas blowers and that will go in effect from private use in 2027.

If you blow enough into their yard it will make a wall and block the blower noise next time.

The gas ones are the worst because they run at a constant 75-85 dB right at the operator's ear and low-frequency noise like that travels through walls way better than people expect. Electric backpack units cut the sound power level by roughly 10 dB, which is perceived as about half as loud, so it's not just a green thing.

13

u/twotonsosalt 14h ago

Some actually run over 100db.

I don't think OP has to be framed as a narcissist who is running roughshod over workers and contractors. It's a collective problem. We could decide to use rakes for leaves and brooms for litter, but we haven't, and it's legit to complain about how shitty our loud solution is.

It's also irrational that no one ever collects the leaves, just blows them around and then does it again the next day.

Also on my list is whoever instructs the leaf-blowing workers to dash into the street, blowing leaves all the way to the yellow line. I see this on Pine Street at 7 in the morning, workers chasing leaves into the street.

I appreciate your kind words, but I actually am a very evil villan type. I wear a coat of puppy fur and have working class men carry me around the city so my feet never touch the ground. I tell them Ill pay them triple whatever they make at their job, but then when it's payday I pay them in unsolicited advice about how to not be poor. (The secret? Have money and be beautiful and perfect, like me.) /s (bc /s seems necessary these days)

I think the bit about moving them around over and over also drives me nuts. Its like a modern day Seattle Sisyphus.

I lived in japan for a few years and never saw or heard a leaf blower. They do most shit by hand over there, like real men because disrupting the harmony would probably get you killed. So they do it the honorable way and rake em up.

Leaf blowers are awful in some many ways (even the battery powered ones.) They kick up pollutants, mold, etc and send them airborne, they destroy animal homes and insect homes. We're incredibly stupid and lazy as a species to keep using them.

Here’s to hoping people follow the law. In Seattle, commercial and residential need to move away from gas powered leaf blowers in 2027. So, it will be quieter, right?

I did not know about this! Thanks for sharing a link.

9

u/TheBrothersKarmazov 13h ago edited 13h ago

Just pointing out that the linked page does not correctly characterize the City's position on this issue. There is no law prohibiting gas leaf blowers for individuals and commercial landscapers in 2027 in Seattle. The City passed a resolution to phase out City-owned gas leaf blowers, and declared its intent to study enacting a ban on gas leaf blowers for all others in Seattle in 2027.

The resolution just establishes a policy intent, it does not create a law.

Hi, I've been a maintenance supervisor for about a decade, got a little insight here. Noise restrictions end at 7am, and they have to pack their schedules tightly.

Every single thing that any property does that affects more than one person at a time is met with constant complaints. If you start at 7, someone is angry that you started too early. If you start at 9, someone else is angry that you kicked up pollen while they're walking to work. If you don't do it, someone else is angry that the walkway is covered in leaves. If you start at noon, it's, "why are you interrupting my lunch hour". If you do it in the late afternoon, it's, "I work night shift and you people are monsters".

Here's the unvarnished truth. We don't listen to your complaints because the second we change our plans we get a new set of complaints. After ten years I've realized that the accomodations you make for one person so consistently piss off another that it's more efficient to just be sincere in your apology for how it affects people and then do what you need to do. So that's why they do it. Because they're legally allowed to, and because there is no functional difference between your complaints and next person's complaints, so we don't court the opportunity for a second set of them.

I totally understand that, and an empathetic to the workers, to be clear. I leaned into the shit posting with some of the responses I was getting. I actually work adjacent to property management and deeply uninterested the idea that people be bitching no matter what. With that insight, with being on both sides, if I were in the office with the manager of that building, I'd argue for a later start time and piss of a different set of people because I dont think all arguments are the same. Its literally my job to field resisent complaints and would happily stand by my decision to start later. Id open a conversation that maybe the city should set it to 8am and then everyone can blame Katie instead of you guys, since blaming Katie is so many peoples favorite hobby.

But the real solution is quieter leaf blowers. I vaguely know they exist, and I assume theyre more expensive and come with their own downsides? Hopefully the future is more affordable quiet leaf blowers? I think thats what the whole Obama Hope campaign was about right?

Edit: deeply ****understand not uninterested. Im on mobile and editing is being wonky, my apologies

Anyway, yall do hard work and I do infact appreciate it.

9

u/quit_fucking_about 🚆build more trains🚆 14h ago

I appreciate the considered response! Part of the reason it's a blanket 7am is because half of our year is unsuitable for the majority of exterior construction and landscaping work, while we as a city have been consistently trying to build more and denser to keep up with demand. It's a hard balance. On my end, I would prefer to have more time during the limited dry days we've got, but I'd work with it if the time changed to 8.

I use a battery powered leaf blower for touch ups at my property specifically to reduce noise and pollution, but they're crazy expensive, burn through batteries, and aren't as effective as gas powered yet. I wouldn't expect any landscaping company to use them in bulk, and if they did, they'd pass the cost on to me, and then I'd have to sell it to the property owners why they're paying so much extra for a service they just want done cheap.

2

u/forjesus420 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 14h ago

Thank you as well! I appreciate your expertise and insight.

Someone else posted a link with information about how gas blowers will be banned in 2027. What are your thoughts on this?

I think the costs should be put back on the property management/owners. While cost of maintaining a building is significant, especially with this administration/economy, it was still their risk to take on the cost. And for rather they like it or not, eventually they'll have to. But anyway- thinking about that would get me started on a whole separate rant about housing costs I won't get into on this reddit thread.

5

u/quit_fucking_about 🚆build more trains🚆 14h ago edited 14h ago

I think it's probably good for the environment but will have downstream consequences nobody planned on, and it's going to be another hidden reason your rent increases.

Interest rates have risen from about 2.7% during the pandemic to around 7.3-7.5% today. That's more than double in 5 years. People don't realize, but multifamily properties have mortgages too. Without getting too into the weeds of it, cash flow for multifamily properties is fucky right now and it's not the money printing machine it was 5 years ago. We keep passing legislation that requires owners spend more and more, and while it's easy for us to say, "that's the owner's problem, not mine 🤷" that often precedes a rent increase.

Not saying I've got a solution. Just saying that people don't realize how many ways owners are being forced to spend and connecting the dots to the decisions they're making as a result of it.

4

u/forjesus420 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 13h ago

I agree, and have seen it first hand working in the industry. I still don't "feel bad" (putting in quotes bc its complicated, and 'feel bad' is a simplified way of saying how I feel) for the owners. Again, it was there risk to take on.

However, in the end it's much bigger than owners and landlords and rather or not theyre greedy. It leads back to a web of national and global issues. The farther you pull the thread, the longer it gets. I think we globally, as humans, need to figure out what our next chapter is economically, politically, and culturally.

Edit: Hey, thanks for chatting with me! I appreciate all your thoughtfulness and hope you have a really lovely day!

Quieter flowers do exist, they also do not work as well. Its. Function of the size and the volume of air movement. Not much can be d9ne unless you wnat to oay a premium personally to have someone manually rake leaves at exponentially less production.

The EGO commercial 1000 does 1000CFM which matches any gas powered blower. It’s quiet, requires much less maintenance, and doesn’t emit noxious fumes. There’s simply no reason to buy gas powered leaf blowers anymore.

Story time! During this last heat wave at my complex, the landscapers would come once a week to blow leaves and what not. Mind you everyone has their windows open because no one has AC. It was around 10am, already getting into the ninety’s and I was particularly cranky not getting to sleep in on my day off. Then the gas fumes started wafting in, my asthma immediately started to flare up and my whole apartment smelled like the gas/oil mixture those two- stroke engines use. I can see this guy out the window. He’s got all the PPE, mask, goggles, ear muffs, and his hoodie on. He’s just blowing dust into the air and this one stick. This happens weekly! Ten more minutes of the sensory terrorism goes on and I’ve just had it. Couldn’t take it any longer, and just know none of this is ok for all the old folks and children in my building.

So I buck up and go out there. I’m a few feet behind him yelling just trying to get his attention but he can’t hear me. Tap him on the shoulder and he turns around, turns off his blower and pull off his earmuffs. I start trying to explain the problem but he doesn’t speak English so he goes and grabs his boss. Boss comes and I just politely explain in my best customer service voice that I understand he’s hired to do a job but that it’s hot, everyone has their windows open so all this dust and gas fumes are going into the apartments. I asked if they could just skip this part today, told him I would talk to property management about asking the contractors to not use leaf blowers. He said sorry totally understand and turned to the leaf blower guy, said “somthing somthing pocito.” I thanked the boss profusely after he told me he would just finish up real quick.

After that, when they would come for their weekly landscaping, leaf blower guy would only take like 5 minutes and just blow the sidewalk clear. I had never actually talked to management but I was relieved that the problem was solved. No more hour long sessions of toxic fumes and dust along with the constant noise! Huzzah! I can die happy because I think I really made a positive quality of life change for my community. All in all leaf blowers are awful. Rakes and brooms would be faster and free to operate and from what I’ve noticed it’s just a way to fill time for the contractors to charge property management.

When people talked about potential noise from neighborhood cafes in a thread recently all I could think of was how often I hear gas leaf blowers at the nearby school and larger managed apartment buildings early in the mornings.

3

u/forjesus420 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 15h ago

There was a thread about cafe noise? I totally missed that one. What noise could there even be?

If I wanted to REALLY be a negative nancy I'd complain about a restaurant right across the street from me thats expensive and a go to for birthdays and celebrations. So itll be fairly late (9/10pm) on a weekday and people come spilling out and do that thing where they drunkenly say goodbye for 10 mins, loudly laughing and half screaming about how much they love each other but... when I soul search about it, I realize Im just poor and friendless. (Read as playful and sarcastic and not literal.)

2

u/matunos Maple Leaf 14h ago

Perhaps the commenter above is referring to the Volunteer Park Cafe & Pantry in Cap Hill, which was allowing patrons to use their backyard garden as a seating area against the original operating license, which restricted the backyard for such use due to (overblown, IMO) noise concerns from neighbors.

50

u/The_Leafblower_Guy 15h ago

If you do a simple economic analysis with current gas prices and the cost of operating a gas blower, the payback on a brand new $1500 Stihl backpack battery blower is only 4 months!

Usual pushback: Q: Not powerful enough! A: You are blowing too big of a pile, grab a rake.

Q: Battery doesn’t last long enough! A: You are likely blowing too much, or just get another battery and extend your payback another month or two.

Eventually all these landscapers will see the light and have electric trucks they can charge their tool batteries in while they are doing other tasks and their quality of life as well as profit margins will go up.

Us residents will experience a more healthy and live-able community without the noise or toxic pollution of gasoline and motor oil mixed together with zero emissions controls like cars have.

13

u/matunos Maple Leaf 14h ago

Eventually they'll "see the light" when the gas powered blowers are banned (next year?). Until then I'll assume they're making choices that work best for them economically.

Unless and until the residents are paying them more to "grab a rake" or investing in the capital expenses of multiple battery backs and electric trucks, I will remain unsurprised that they don't voluntarily switch.

3

u/wookieSLAYER1 12h ago

The amount of times I’ve seen landscapers just blowing one or two leaves and a stick and them practically going nowhere, I’m confident picking them up by hand would be faster.

33

u/PassiveGambler Bremerton 14h ago

There is a better solution. Battery powered blowers are good enough now that they can replace gas powered ones. The city already passed a law banning gas powered blowers starting next year

Seriously, I was just thinking about this because the leaf blowers around my house.  I was in Venice and heading to the airport at 5:00 a.m. in the main plaza where all the trains come in was being leaf blowed by someone with a giant blower with a battery pack backpack.

It was pretty quiet compared to the s*** I hear regularly here.

I have a battery powered leaf blower, as does my neighbor. Mine is much more powerful than his, but both get the job done. For most homeowners a battery powered one is perfectly fine. Ideal even.

To make them commercially viable, you would need a good charging solution and more batteries since mine chews up one in 15-20 minutes. It would also have to be made more ergonomic since mine is just a handheld version. The backpack blowers are much easier to use because it isn’t just your forearm trying to push back against the force of the blower. I haven’t looked to see if such a thing exists in the battery powered version.

The dumb dumbs that my apartment building hired “tried” switching to electric.  Instead of buying commercial electric blowers, they bought a single residential one and a single tiny battery (heard the landscaper yelling to each other that the battery was dead). They then brought out the gas one again.

They haven’t used it since. I figure they did that as a performance to tell the apartment management why they “can’t” switch to electric.

Gas powered leaf blowers need to be banned - full stop. They are terrible for environment and us. Businesses that use them should fined out of existence. The landscaping business my neighbor uses markets itself as environmentally friendly but uses all gas powered tools.

There are plenty of electrical plug in and battery powered options on the market.

I’m on the 9th floor of an office building and I have to put on my headphones to drown out the noise of the leaf blowers from the street below.

If the landscaping equipment requires the operator to use ear protection, it’s too fucking loud for everyone in the area.

Also fine the assholes that blow leaves and debris into our bike lanes, creating dangerous slick spots.

Leaf litter is great for the environment! It’s a perfect ecological system that existed and thrived for millions of years before the first asshole with a leaf blower crawled out of the ooze

There's a small aerospace company that created reduced-noise wing shapes (& made jet cowlings? IDR) that have since branched out their knowledge to leaf-blowers. So hopefully that quiet-tech will come our way sooner than later.
The city does gas-powered leaf blowing downtown et.al. and, yeah, it's quite annoying & hard to concentrate when you're WFH.

4

u/Washington253 10h ago

Just gotta add that yesterday we had our leaf blowers going at full blast outside my apartment building at 6:45am. I then walked a few blocks over to my bus station and there was a guy blowing leaves there too. This guy, though, only had his leaf blower on at low power so it was actually really quiet. Seemed to be working well for him. So is it at least possible for the 7am leaf blowers to not be operating at full blast?

10

u/thedreaminggoose 16h ago

Yeah this is standard and sucks ass.
I live in SLU and they typically start or start 5 min before 7am and goes till probably about 815.

It pisses me off because I can hear it so well 20 floors up and one block away so must be worse for those closer.

Rake and broom! Rake and broom! No one needs leaf blowers!

4

u/okpackerfan 13h ago

I used to be a professor of sustainability at OK State University. I wrote an op-ed to the student paper that leaf blowing in OK was a waste of time, money, and annoyance since it is windy AF 24-7 in OK. My classroom trash stopped getting changed. I had to clean my own whiteboard, sweep my own floors for a year. It was petty. I think that using a leaf blower is an easy job and the head of the crew does it so that he can say 'i put in my 8hrs. today' while doing essentially nothing. When I moved to Seattle, I got into construction. In construction, blowers are not allowed. Silica dust is a top 4 OSHA hazard. So it's brooms only.

Why are we using loud gas guzzling leaf blowers when quieter electric blowers exist?!

18

u/Admirable_Dog_6349 15h ago

As a homeowner with a battery powered leaf blower…batteries are expensive, and they don’t last long. If I’m a landscaper with multiple large properties to maintain, there’s no way I would use batteries.

6

u/Mamamama29010 15h ago

But if you’re a landscaper with multiple properties, there’s gotta be a break even point where cycling a group of batteries becomes cheaper than paying for gas, no?

17

u/rocksalt_dickpunch 15h ago

Honestly at this point there isn't. The commercial sized electric blowers use two of the large batteries, and will get you about 40mins of run time in a commercial sized electric blower. They're $300 each. For two guys in fall working all day at many sites you would need to have 24 charged batteries on hand each day, so invest in about $7200 in batteries alone. They start losing charge after a couple years and need to be replaced. Much lower investment in gas equipment unfortunately. Hopefully battery tech gets better.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Crimsont_ide 15h ago

Electric works where I work because not a lot of property. But for landscapers it take to many batteries to finish the day.

2

u/ChaseballBat 15h ago

Usually properties look for the cheapest option available, cheap labor means the cheapest equipment. Also the highend electric leaf blowers that a commercial landscaper would use, are not really that much more quiet.

I've been down voted to oblivion for asking this question before.

I have a neighbor that has a small, landscaped yard that gets an hour a week at least of blowing a few leaves back and forth.

I don't buy the argument that it's so hard to rake or sweep.

Some people just seem to need to make a lot of noise, or they don't feel good.

Aren't there some new local regulations about the gas powered (loud) blowers?

The City passed a resolution to phase out City-owned gas leaf blowers, and declared its intent to study enacting a ban on gas leaf blowers for all others in Seattle in 2027. There is no law prohibiting gas leaf blowers for individuals and commercial landscapers in 2027 in Seattle. The resolution just establishes a policy intent, it does not create a law.

Commercial electric leaf blowers are not that much quieter. There's one in use at 7 in the morning near my building, year round. On other mornings, it's the gas-powered ones used by other teams. It's all loud.

I think some people mentally compare the gas-powered ones to electric leaf blowers made for home use.

1

u/twotonsosalt 14h ago

The EGO Commercial 1000 is rated at 65db at 50 ft. Gas powered blowers can go over 110db. That’s rather significant.

I am ardently against all leafblowers. Use brooms and rakes as needed. Yes it will take more manpower, thus makes more jobs. In fact, pay more for people taking the harder and more ecologically valid approach. Hell, vacuum up the bits, at least then you arent actively making the city worse.

Do you really want to breathe the powdered horror that coats our streets? Whether the biological excretions, the chemical cleaners, other chemicals, or just pollen? I don't. The noise is meaningless in my opinion compared to what some folks casually will blow right into poeples' faces. I say this as someone who walks to and from work through cap hill and downtown every day and have to deal with this most mornings.

Yeah, surely there is a place for their use, but "cleaning" the sidewalk in front of every business and apartment is not important enough for this.

This may be an unreasonable opinion, and i dont have malice for the people who have been hired to do a specific job, but society is at least marginally worsened and sickened by the use of leafblowers.

Edited to add:

-I work overnights and dont mind the excessive noise even when trying to sleep, but that is an understandable issue for many folks

-the gas of many blowers sucks but the rest of the particulates are what grind my gears most

-ive worked at 2 landscape companies and also was a youth who used a push mower, in the summer I went around and mowed people's yards for pocket cash and in the winters snowshoveled(in eastern washington). I sympathize with the workers, especially if they arent in PPE, but the companies could collectively charge more and do a better service to the city with more rakes and brooms.

Maybe rakes need better branding. Do you think we can make raking part of the next fitness trend? Add speed raking to next CrossFit games or Hyrox race? Or maybe make it this aspirational lifestyle choice. Like, bribe a bunch of celebrities to publicly talk about how they love raking and only employ landscapers who rake because it makes your home feel like a sanctuary.

I really wish people would rediscover the superior technology: the rake

19

u/Hi-Im-High 16h ago

How is a rake superior in any way besides its quieter

8

u/windsockglue 10h ago

Because using a leaf blower of any kind kicks up mold, pollutants (think dried up pesticide and herbicides, micro plastics, dust from car tires) and fucks up the homes of animals and insects living around in the plants. That crap is then inhaled by the person using the tools and anyone nearby, sometimes also pushing and depositing all those things into people's homes.

Leaf blowers, gas or battery powered, are not harmless.

10

u/isitanywonderreally 15h ago

It actually gathers the leaves/detritus as opposed to just blowing them into the street and/or someone else's yard.

4

u/StartTheMontage 15h ago

You know that they blow the leaves into piles and then pick them up, right? At least that’s what they are supposed to do. I know people will have other anecdotes but companies will pick up leaves they blow to make the properties look nice.

2

u/Uarnthelpful 6h ago

Okay thank you, I used to do property services and was in disbelief reading these replies about how they just blow the leaves around and leave them there.

1

u/isitanywonderreally 15h ago

I've done exactly this job. Some material does get picked up, but it's not the stuff near property boundaries or the street. That stuff just gets blown into other peoples' property, unless your company happens to also tend that property.

2

u/BananaBodacious 6h ago

literally today I walked past a guy who was blowing the leaves out of a sidewalk in front of a business. he went only up to the property line, and left a pile of loose leaves directly in front of someone else's stairway.

Leaf blowers are terrible polluters. Their engines are inefficiently designed, so tons of gas doesn't get burned correctly and fills the very local area (aka the air you and your neighbors are currently breathing) with all kinds of pollutants (formaldehyde, benzene, etc). And also using one for an hour uses the gas it would take to drive a big truck up to 3,000 miles. They are just a really badly designed, outdated technology.

As someone who walked a mile and a half to work every day for many years, I can attest that when leaves pile up on the sidewalk and it's been raining, they turn into slippery mush that's especially annoying and a bit dangerous on a hill. Only a few places where that was an issue, but there was one stretch in particular it drove me nuts that the owners there didn't do anything about it. If people want to let them go in their yard that's fine. I also think when they end up in the street and washed into drains they can lead to clogging, which then leads to flooded streets. Again, probably only an issue in certain places, but we have a ton of trees here and that's a lot of dead leaves piling up.

7 am is the end of the evening noise ordinance and most crews have up to 8 that they have to do in a day... So they start as early as possible.

It's always been at least 8am wherever I have lived, thank goodness. Makes you wonder if the company isn't just "cheating" a bit to try and fit in a job at the end of the day. Check with your property management company, because there may very well be a clause in the contract which specifies an agreed upon starting time.

3

Please try to be understanding. Many landscapers are from the Latino community and they're already stressed enough. I don't understand leaf blowers. The people using them never seem to actually collect the leaves, just blow them around. The leaves are supposed to decay on the ground and return to the ecosystem. Just let them. The sidewalks and streets are covered in them anyway.
