Rant Why are we leaf blowing at 7am????

It's 7am. What property managers are instructing their landscapers to leaf blow for an hour starting at 7am? Just wanna talk.

Edit: I mean, it's 8am but they started at 7 😭 How many leaves can there even be?

Edit edit: omg guys. I didnt realize it was life or death. Thank you for enlightening me.

I also have learned the internet is NOT a space to ever speak negatively and that doing so must inherently make me an absolutely selfish unempathrtic person. I've learned a lot and I'm very grateful. 🙏

Edit two electric boogalo: I'm also anti-homeless and ungrateful for a place to live!! Im learning and growing, guys! Thank you. 🤍

🏰The Last Edit 🦄: I work in property management and understand the nature of being working class, and having a job to do. I understand the citys noise ordinance quiet hours end at 7 am. I understand no matter when you do it, someones mad. Apparently (editception: CITY OWNED) gas leaf blowers will be banned in 2027 (and there will be a study done to consider a full ban). I understand theyre expensive and less powerful. I think landscapers should charge the extra cost back to property management/owners, because, despite the worsening inflation, they took on the risk (and no, rents shouldn't increase because of it.) I understand some people think if the electric blower is not powerful enough, the pile is too big. I think the act of moving leaves around over and over and never actually removing them seems like a waste of time.

I apologize for my sins, and have asked Jesus to forgive me. I appreciate everyones humor and insight. Go hawks, or whatever!

Hi, I've been a maintenance supervisor for about a decade, got a little insight here. Noise restrictions end at 7am, and they have to pack their schedules tightly.

Every single thing that any property does that affects more than one person at a time is met with constant complaints. If you start at 7, someone is angry that you started too early. If you start at 9, someone else is angry that you kicked up pollen while they're walking to work. If you don't do it, someone else is angry that the walkway is covered in leaves. If you start at noon, it's, "why are you interrupting my lunch hour". If you do it in the late afternoon, it's, "I work night shift and you people are monsters".

Here's the unvarnished truth. We don't listen to your complaints because the second we change our plans we get a new set of complaints. After ten years I've realized that the accomodations you make for one person so consistently piss off another that it's more efficient to just be sincere in your apology for how it affects people and then do what you need to do. So that's why they do it. Because they're legally allowed to, and because there is no functional difference between your complaints and next person's complaints, so we don't court the opportunity for a second set of them.

But how do landscapers, garbage collectors, and construction workers know to start loud machines exactly when it’s my turn to talk on a Zoom work conference call regardless of time of day or day of the week?

66

u/quit_fucking_about 🚆build more trains🚆 15h ago

We have little radios. We talk.

u/Orleanian Fremont 13h ago

Stop scheduling Zoom meetings during landscaping time, you dolt!

2

u/Witch-Alice That sounds great. Let’s hang out soon. 12h ago

Clearly the fault of whoever scheduled that meeting during leefblower time

It’s all a conspiracy to fuck you over specifically. Congrats, you’re the main character☺️

16

u/bpmdrummerbpm 12h ago

I know. I’m trying to understand how the conspiracy works and how they know how important I am.

If you don't do it, someone else is angry that the walkway is covered in leaves.

I wish they would invent a way to get leaves off walkways that didn't involve a huge loud gas engine.

I totally understand that, and an empathetic to the workers, to be clear. I leaned into the shit posting with some of the responses I was getting. I actually work adjacent to property management and deeply uninterested the idea that people be bitching no matter what. With that insight, with being on both sides, if I were in the office with the manager of that building, I'd argue for a later start time and piss of a different set of people because I dont think all arguments are the same. Its literally my job to field resisent complaints and would happily stand by my decision to start later. Id open a conversation that maybe the city should set it to 8am and then everyone can blame Katie instead of you guys, since blaming Katie is so many peoples favorite hobby.

But the real solution is quieter leaf blowers. I vaguely know they exist, and I assume theyre more expensive and come with their own downsides? Hopefully the future is more affordable quiet leaf blowers? I think thats what the whole Obama Hope campaign was about right?

Edit: deeply ****understand not uninterested. Im on mobile and editing is being wonky, my apologies

Anyway, yall do hard work and I do infact appreciate it.

I appreciate the considered response! Part of the reason it's a blanket 7am is because half of our year is unsuitable for the majority of exterior construction and landscaping work, while we as a city have been consistently trying to build more and denser to keep up with demand. It's a hard balance. On my end, I would prefer to have more time during the limited dry days we've got, but I'd work with it if the time changed to 8.

I use a battery powered leaf blower for touch ups at my property specifically to reduce noise and pollution, but they're crazy expensive, burn through batteries, and aren't as effective as gas powered yet. I wouldn't expect any landscaping company to use them in bulk, and if they did, they'd pass the cost on to me, and then I'd have to sell it to the property owners why they're paying so much extra for a service they just want done cheap.

Thank you as well! I appreciate your expertise and insight.

Someone else posted a link with information about how gas blowers will be banned in 2027. What are your thoughts on this?

I think the costs should be put back on the property management/owners. While cost of maintaining a building is significant, especially with this administration/economy, it was still their risk to take on the cost. And for rather they like it or not, eventually they'll have to. But anyway- thinking about that would get me started on a whole separate rant about housing costs I won't get into on this reddit thread.

I think it's probably good for the environment but will have downstream consequences nobody planned on, and it's going to be another hidden reason your rent increases.

Interest rates have risen from about 2.7% during the pandemic to around 7.3-7.5% today. That's more than double in 5 years. People don't realize, but multifamily properties have mortgages too. Without getting too into the weeds of it, cash flow for multifamily properties is fucky right now and it's not the money printing machine it was 5 years ago. We keep passing legislation that requires owners spend more and more, and while it's easy for us to say, "that's the owner's problem, not mine 🤷" that often precedes a rent increase.

Not saying I've got a solution. Just saying that people don't realize how many ways owners are being forced to spend and connecting the dots to the decisions they're making as a result of it.

4

u/forjesus420 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 16h ago

I agree, and have seen it first hand working in the industry. I still don't "feel bad" (putting in quotes bc its complicated, and 'feel bad' is a simplified way of saying how I feel) for the owners. Again, it was there risk to take on.

However, in the end it's much bigger than owners and landlords and rather or not theyre greedy. It leads back to a web of national and global issues. The farther you pull the thread, the longer it gets. I think we globally, as humans, need to figure out what our next chapter is economically, politically, and culturally.

Edit: Hey, thanks for chatting with me! I appreciate all your thoughtfulness and hope you have a really lovely day!

Quieter flowers do exist, they also do not work as well. Its. Function of the size and the volume of air movement. Not much can be d9ne unless you wnat to oay a premium personally to have someone manually rake leaves at exponentially less production.

6

u/forjesus420 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 17h ago

I hope this can be improved in the future. I also love that it autocorrect to quieter flowers. 🌼 thats cute.

3

u/twotonsosalt 16h ago

The EGO commercial 1000 does 1000CFM which matches any gas powered blower. It’s quiet, requires much less maintenance, and doesn’t emit noxious fumes. There’s simply no reason to buy gas powered leaf blowers anymore.

1

u/sls35 Olympic Hills 16h ago

I have used it. Its sort of quieter. At least the motor has a different sound. Its a little more high pitched. The blowing action itself at supposedly 1000cfm is just a lot of turbulent air noise that you cannot eliminate.

Then add the extra cost of the unit.

0

u/mosscock_treeman 16h ago

They already own a bunch of gas blowers, and the gas blowers are easier and cheaper to maintain. There are nicer battery powered ones but the chargers are expensive, the batteries are expensive, the charge doesn't last very long, and those batteries need to be replaced as they die or break.

On top of that, most repairs on a gas blower are super easy. Especially for these guys who have used them for so long. If something goes wrong with the electrical stuff in a battery blower, you're paying for new parts or maybe a technician to fix it. It's not quite as simple as telling small companies to go buy a brand new fleet of battery blowers

2

u/sls35 Olympic Hills 15h ago

I agree with everything except for maintenance. Maintenance on an electric leaf blower is so much fucking easier.

1

u/Marigold1976 Fremont 16h ago

An 8am start time for ending noise restrictions will never happen. Signed, every construction related union in Washington, plus every privately held construction company. Include SDOT and WDOT etc. in that group. In other news, the parks department used electric blowers now. That’s a win.

u/bbbygenius 57m ago

This is the way

0

u/BananaBodacious 10h ago

Why can't rakes and brooms be used? Besides being loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage, and causing a ton of air pollution by kicking up small particles, leaf blowers just move leaves etc back and forth endlessly. They're just not a good tool.

2

u/quit_fucking_about 🚆build more trains🚆 9h ago edited 9h ago

May I gently suggest that the people who do this work professionally choose the tools that are cheap, cost-effective, and get them get the greatest result for the least amount of work? Every professional who has to do this job has settled on the same solution, so why do you, someone who doesn't work in the industry, believe that this conclusion they've all come to just doesn't work?

It seems to me that you started with a conclusion and are working your way backwards to justify that conclusion because you hate leaf blowers. Which is fine. But it doesn't make the tool less effective.

3

u/37ysheZz 8h ago

Yo I live in the city and have literally watched guys “leaf blow” a one block strip of sidewalk for 2 hours starting and stopping for every person walking by !! There’s something diabolical about those machines when they could’ve swept it all up peacefully in prolly 30 minutes.

1

u/Tychotesla Broadway 7h ago

Rakes are good for some areas, bad for others. In general I'd prefer a rake for heavy deposits of leaves, and a battery powered leaf-blower for sparse leaves or many of the situations where leaves hug the ground (e.g. if you live in a city where leaves get wet).

You get complaints about gas smell when using the *battery powered* leaf-blower, which echoes what the guy above was saying about ultimately having to not give AF.

0

u/quit_fucking_about 🚆build more trains🚆 7h ago

And the fact that I've seen someone use channel locks as a hammer doesn't mean that channels locks don't work.

0

u/BananaBodacious 9h ago

Or they're uninformed, including about the health impacts to operators? https://mountsinaiexposomics.org/gas-leaf-blowers-are-health-hazards/

1

u/quit_fucking_about 🚆build more trains🚆 9h ago

So we're just going to sidestep your claim that they don't work?

-1

u/BananaBodacious 8h ago

someone else in this thread, who's in landscaping, says they are popular because you LOOK like you're doing something. But anyone paying attention can see leaves just get blown around, back and forth

2

u/quit_fucking_about 🚆build more trains🚆 8h ago

Again, we're cherry picking our examples, seeking the one voice that agrees with our position and ignoring everyone else who does the work, who all settled on the same solution. Just like how antivaxers had no problem finding medical professionals to support their claims that masks and vaccines don't work - they were wrong, but they had plenty of options for cherry picking.

I'll speak frankly. I was a laborer for 15 years and I've supervised other laborers for 10. The attitude of "I've never done this a day in my life but I definitely know more than the people who do it" is condescending as hell, and that's what I take issue with.

Landscapers use gas leaf blowers because they're the best tool for the job. Give a landscaper their choice of electric, gas, or your suggestion of a rake and broom, and they'll pick the gas blower every time. The city has a resolution to phase them out by 2027, and once they are forced to go electric, the goal of every landscaper will always be to find an electric option that works as well as gas did.

I'm not trying to tell you your distaste for them is invalid. Just quit the condescending crap about how much better you know than the people who do the work.

-7

u/sls35 Olympic Hills 17h ago

Yeah all the narcissistic people in here forget there are other narcissists that might be inconvenienced by people working. Its stunning.

3

u/EmmEnnEff 🚆build more trains🚆 15h ago

There's socially useful work like taking out the garbage, or construction, or any of a hundred things that make noise, and there's whatever the fuck compels people to hire landscapers to blast 100db leafblowers for hours.

The ban on those abominations can't come fast enough.

Believe it or not, I'm one person and not all of "you guys". And you haven't seen me do it. I'm the supervisor, not the guy holding the leaf blower. I'm the guy who tells off the person who stands there for five minutes.

And unless I've failed to follow this conversation, I'm pretty sure I haven't asked for special consideration. I've explained why I don't offer it.

How about you oh-so-important people doing the oh-so-crucial job of moving leaves around just find a quieter way? You act like you're saving lives instead of doing a fairly unimportant job.

I'm not sure why you're under the impression I had presented this as a life or death service. Sounds like you're projecting a bit here, bud. The reality is that we have a Property Management Agreement with the building owners that provisions for keeping walkways clear, and I don't get to decide which parts of our business agreement I'm not going to do. So I just do it.

That being said, the city absolutely does consider it a safety issue and places responsibility on property owners/managers to address it. Disability advocates also consider clear walkways a priority. Here's some official guidance from SDOT. https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2020/09/25/autumn-is-here-and-were-all-in-this-together-its-time-to-rake-your-leaves-cut-back-overgrown-vegetation-on-your-sidewalks-planting-strips/#clearing-leaves

5

u/matunos Maple Leaf 17h ago

It's important enough for the people paying them to do it. I guess if that bothers you, you can offer them more to not move the leaves around.

0

u/boomfruit 13h ago edited 13h ago

"Someone paid someone else to do something, therefore that thing can't possibly be bad or warrant legitimate complaints." That's your reasoning? If it's not, it's inadvertently implied.

0

u/matunos Maple Leaf 13h ago

"Here's some words that that the other person never wrote, but because they're in quotation marks, you can pretend they did and then argue against them."

Wow, what a stupid thing you wrote.

0

u/boomfruit 13h ago edited 12h ago

Huh, weird how you ignored the other thing I wrote, which was specifically "It's possible that's not what you meant, but I'm letting you know that that's how it comes across."

Edit: Well, you've blocked me now, but here's what you replied:

Now you are quoting yourself with something you didn't actually write. You realize that the thread history is visible, yes? You're not pulling one over on anyone.

Why should I entertain a discussion with someone who is not arguing in good faith?

In blocking me, it seems like you don't want to entertain a discussion at all. But seriously, are you unfamiliar with the concept of paraphrasing? Do you think I was attempting to 1) quote myself verbatim rather than show what I was trying to get across, or 2) make up a thing and pretend that I said it, despite the comment being one up? I can't tell if you're being genuine, that you can't tell that my exact quote of "If it's not, it's inadvertently implied," and my paraphrasing of "It's possible that's not what you meant, but I'm letting you know that that's how it comes across," are basically equivalent.

1

u/matunos Maple Leaf 12h ago

Get off your high fucking horse. You’re not better than a landscaper just because you don’t respect what they do to make a living for themselves.

1

I was a janitor, I very much respect actual landscaping. My issue is with gas powered leaf blowers and the excuses used to justify them, nothing else.
