Rant Why are we leaf blowing at 7am????

It's 7am. What property managers are instructing their landscapers to leaf blow for an hour starting at 7am? Just wanna talk.

Edit: I mean, it's 8am but they started at 7 😭 How many leaves can there even be?

Edit edit: omg guys. I didnt realize it was life or death. Thank you for enlightening me.

I also have learned the internet is NOT a space to ever speak negatively and that doing so must inherently make me an absolutely selfish unempathrtic person. I've learned a lot and I'm very grateful. πŸ™

Edit two electric boogalo: I'm also anti-homeless and ungrateful for a place to live!! Im learning and growing, guys! Thank you. 🀍

🏰The Last Edit πŸ¦„: I work in property management and understand the nature of being working class, and having a job to do. I understand the citys noise ordinance quiet hours end at 7 am. I understand no matter when you do it, someones mad. Apparently (editception: CITY OWNED) gas leaf blowers will be banned in 2027 (and there will be a study done to consider a full ban). I understand theyre expensive and less powerful. I think landscapers should charge the extra cost back to property management/owners, because, despite the worsening inflation, they took on the risk (and no, rents shouldn't increase because of it.) I understand some people think if the electric blower is not powerful enough, the pile is too big. I think the act of moving leaves around over and over and never actually removing them seems like a waste of time.

I apologize for my sins, and have asked Jesus to forgive me. I appreciate everyones humor and insight. Go hawks, or whatever!

As a commercial property manager, leaves are a major slip hazard. A little noise never broke someone’s face.

Yeah so just blow them into the bike lane, someone else's problem.

13

u/TdubsSEA I'm never leaving Seattle. 17h ago

Nah. We collect them for composting.

u/Effective_Tour_4822 16h ago

Genuinely, thank you. The number of places I see them just blown into the bike lanes and streets is too damn high.

I hear ya. I see it all the time.

Genuinely curious why rakes/brooms are not an option.

Because no landscaping service could stay in business.

Fucking ridiculous.

Looks like someone's parents never had them rake leaves when they were growing up. This shit would take forever.

4

u/erleichda29 14h ago

Wrong. I love raking. I have a push mower too.

u/Juno_JDY 10h ago

Lol, how stupid

Would you use a push mower on a football field? What if your job had you mowing multiple football fields per day? Still gonna use the push mower?

If other countries can do it, we can too. Japan doesn't use leaf blowers.

u/f_crick 7h ago

In Japan everyone, or at least most people help keep public spaces clean.

Sorry you're being downvoted, you are objectively correct. It is absolutely ridiculous that we have to prop up a system that creates noise and air pollution in favor of literally doing anything else, like giving people more stake and investment in their local property and wanting to clean it, or having adequate city systems that remove leaves, or literally anything else besides what we've created.

Have you ever picked up leaves?

Why not use grass cutting push lawn mowers that don't collect the cut grass and then rake the grass like we used to do, too?

I once had a neighbor whose parents were very late to adopting an actual modern day lawn mower and they would force their children to use the push grass cutter mower + then rake their grass and they always looked miserable.

If their parents weren't home, they would come over and ask to use our modern lawn mower and we'd let them

Unironically scythes are better for cutting grass.

Just because something is convenient doesn't mean it is good.

And fucks up your back in record speeds unless your yard is 1 foot by 1 foot.

It can't collect grass and fucks you up. Double L.

Not collecting grass is a good thing. Scouring the earth and not letting any decomposition occur is bad for the environment.

Leaves are a major slip hazard? Is this what the world has come to?

The only solution must be loud-ass gasoline powered wind generators that disrupt general life to get leaves off the sidewalks and cater to the ever fragile ankles of society.

Once it starts raining, yes it absolutely is. Those bastards get slippery.

Side note, Seattle issued an ordinance that requires businesses and residential property owners to phase out the use of gas-powered leaf blowers and replace them with electric powered leaf blowers by 2027. In theory this should help the noise problem. We’ll see if it actually does.

Slay on electric leaf blowers. Edit: I amend my statement with a "It sucks that we have to create things to get rid of biodegradables like a leaf"

7

u/sad_umbrella_stand πŸ€ Hot Rat Summer πŸ€ 17h ago

They are not going to biodegrade in a productive way if they stay on the sidewalks. Leafblowing them back into the dirt/mulch/trees will help them biodegrade significantly better while actually giving back to the soil.

So in this case leaf blowing them can help

I get the sense you’re incapable of recognizing how much is anonymously done for your benefit.

I think it’s your nap time.

πŸ˜‚ damn king you got his ass!!!

7

u/ChaseballBat 17h ago

God I hope to never be this fragile. Yes, leaves left to decompose on the sidewalk are 100% a slipping hazard.

u/ICaseyHearMeRoar Capitol Hill 17h ago

Start paying insurance claims for someone slipping on the sidewalk due to wet leaves and you'll understand

That shouldn't even be a thing because there should be zero liability for someone slipping on nature.

5

u/Hot_Turn Northgate 17h ago

Even if a safety hazard happened "naturally", a land owner is still responsible for keeping their area clear of safety hazards. If you allow people to access your property, you are accepting the responsibility of maintaining that property to basic safety standards.

"safety hazards". It's as much of a hazard as the sun. Liability like that only exists in the US because our healthcare system means people wanted to stick someone else with the medical bill.
