How do I increase butyrate producing bacteria?

Have had a relatively poor diet for most of my life + have had to take antibiotics quite a few times. I'm now eating healthier (35-45g of fibers daily) and have more whole food diversity in my diet, but I'm wondering if this is enough.

Specifically interested in increasing the levels of

Clostridium butyricum, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Eubacterium rectale, and Roseburia

New preclinical study finds Urolithin A activates a protective pathway in intestinal cells, including in tissue from IBD patients

A recent preclinical study uncovers Urolithin A's potential to improve gut health. Researchers from the University of Louisville found that Urolithin A activates a protective pathway in intestinal cells. In inflammatory bowel disease, triggering certain cellular pathways can cause more inflammation; however, in preclinical models, Urolithin A activated a specific pathway with a beneficial response. This activation strengthened the intestinal barrier, boosted production of protective mucus, and reinforced antimicrobial defenses. The researchers state it's the first study showing how a postbiotic can work with the body's own response systems, helping regulate complex processes that happen during intestinal injury.

12 weeks Giardia, and 4 broad spectrum antibtiocs within a handful of months

As the title suggests, my microbiome had taken a hit. I’m 24m.

basically anyone else dealt with a similar level of disruption and came out okay?

i‘m also struggling with ongoing malabsorption 2 months after the last antitbioc and 3 since the giardia.

i suspect deficiencies for several reasons.

I am worried, and as inappropriate as it might sound now, im worried about returning to an occasional binge drink (Irish here).

I’d appreciate any help and shared anecdotes!

Buíochas!

How to start fiber consumption

• Upvotes

I’ve been experiencing a lot of foul-smelling and loud gas, especially at night. My stomach gets really bloated, but I don’t experience any pain.

A friend suggested that I start taking fiber supplements around the same time as the probiotic I take before bed.

What types of fiber would you recommend? And what’s the best way to start?

I’ve read in a few places that it’s best to introduce fiber gradually. I’ve been reading a lot about psyllium husk, and some people suggest starting with 5g, mixing it with water, and drinking it immediately before it turns into a gel.

What’s been your experience with this? Any tips or recommendations?

Unabsorbed iron and the gut environment – why form matters

One issue that comes up with oral iron is the portion that is not absorbed. Free iron remaining in the lumen can influence the gut environment and has been shown in several studies to affect microbial composition.

This is part of the reason different iron forms are discussed in the context of gut tolerance. Ferrous sulfate tends to leave more residual iron and is more often linked with digestive complaints. Forms with higher bioavailability, such as iron bisglycinate, generally result in less unabsorbed iron. Liposomal iron is sometimes used for a similar reason — more of the iron is encapsulated during transit.

None of these completely eliminate contact with the gut, but the amount of free iron left behind does differ between forms.

Anyone here looked into the microbial effects of different iron preparations?

Other options to FMT?

So I've just had a full microbiome GI mapping done and had an appointment with my gastroenterologist and he basically said I had next to no beneficial bacteria left only 1 or 2 strains left and the rest were completely wiped out. Alongside a few nasty strains of bacteria so he recommended a wipe out phase for the bad bacteria then FMT through an enema. I'm wondering if anyone has recovered from a full gut microbiome wipe out without fmt? And if so what the process like? Ideally I don't want to have to do FMT as it's incredibly expensive and I don't exactly like the idea of daily enemas for a whole week. If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it.

Tested a complete flatline on lactulose breath test (0 ppm). What can I do to get my gut flora back?

I've had chronic loose stools and urgency for years (possibly) following past gut infections and a long long course of antibiotics. (but who knows for sure)

I recently did 2 lactulose breath tests expecting SIBO, but got a complete flatline (0 ppm hydrogen and methane across the full 2 hours). My BUPA GI doctor was very surprised and said it basically means my native fermenting bacteria are completely wiped out/sparse.
(I'm now back to NHS so not sure what to do)

All standard scans, colonoscopies, and tests for other causes came back negative. High-dose probiotics (tried Symprove for 3 months) and psyllium husk did nothing or made it worse. Right now I rely on 4 loperamide daily just to slow things down and reduce urgency. No pain, no bloating. Farts don't smell

Has anyone else tested as a total "flatliner"? How did you actually rebuild your microbiome and get normal stool form back? its been 10-15 years and I'm just fed up.

Can you keep a Saccharomyces boulardii culture going indefinitely?

Saccharomyces boulardii works really well for me and I recently started culturing it in fruit juice at home. However, most of the recipes I’ve seen say that the culture will gradually lose its effectiveness after a few batches and that it’s better to start a new batch with a fresh Saccharomyces boulardii tablet.

What I’m wondering is whether there’s actually a way to keep the culture going indefinitely without having to buy new tablets. Is there a way to maintain a stable culture over many generations or will it eventually lose its beneficial properties no matter what I do?

Also, if you have any extra tips or useful information about culturing S. boulardii at home, I’d love to hear them

Scientific Article Discussion First time taking probiotics - fatigue, feeling ill

Hi, this my first post in this subreddit and I hope the topic is ok!

Apparently I have a severe dysbiosis caused by an estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy and my gastroenterologist prescribed two different probiotics and one medication for leaky gut. I started all of them on the same day and I've been feeling extremely fatigued. I am SO tired and weak like my body is fighting a viral infection. I was constipated the first few days but now my digestion is regular. The GI issues that I started this therapy for are better but that might be coincidental because they are closely linked to my cycle.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is this my body focusing all energy on the gut? Was starting all three medications at once too much?

Would greatly appreciate some advice! Thank you!

Who has managed to get rid of Blastocystis hominis ?

Okay! So I have blastocystid hominis (see attached photo indicating 574.61 rate - I actually don’t fully understand this assuming it’s high?) anyways I am working with a natropath/nutritionist. If you have managed to get rid of blasto how did you do it ? And how do you feel now (what symptoms have gone away)?

My symptoms:
\- constant bloating
\- exhaustion
\- skin issues (2 rounds of Roaccutane and lots of skin treatments still the same)
\- a lot of cravings for sugar and carbs
\- brain fog
