Comics "Kya and the Secret of the Sand" - Comic Discussion Thread

FULL SPOILERS allowed in this thread. As a reminder spoilers for this comic outside this thread must be marked until a month after the book is released.

"Kya and the Secret of the Sand" is the second LoK 'one-shot graphic novel'*. The main story takes place years before the show following a young Kya. The comic releases July 28th mass market and July 29th in comic stores. It is written by Kiku Hughes with art by Alex Monik and colors by Diana Sousa, made in collaboration with Mike and Bryan.

Description:

While helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya shares a story from her youth of a time when she was lost and disconnected from herself, far from home in the Si Wong Desert… Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.

Question Is it possible Bolin got Lava Bending through Harmonic Convergence?

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

I'm rewatching LoK now, and I've always thought that Bolin's lava bending was something that was inside him all along, but that he just needed to be tested and under pressure to activate it. Like a lot of people, I originally thought his being born of a fire and earth bender had something to do with him having the ability.

But on this watch, I started wondering: If Harmonic Convergence was powerful enough to give a bunch of non-benders air bending, then maybe it also could have given Bolin lava bending without him knowing until he was in a position to need to bend lava.

Part of my thought process is that Bolin admits that he's tried metal bending multiple times since learning about Toph (his hero) and has always failed. While metal bending and lava bending might be earth bending skills that can't coexist in one bender, they both seem to be high level bending skills that require looking deep within the substance you're bending to find or change something about its molecular structure (finding the earth still within the metal, or activating the energy and particles within the earth to transmute it into lava). If Bolin had the ability to learn to lava bend all along, might he have discovered that by accident during all of his private training to try and access his metal bending?

In the end, I still think it's more than likely a skill he was always capable of tapping into but never thought to try until he was faced with a wall of lava, but the fact that we see him activate the ability during the same season that we see a bunch of people get air bending is the kind of coincidence that can't help but to make me wonder if that correlation isn't also causation.

Discussion "we love toph & katara, we don't hate korra because of misogyny." notice how they never mention lin or asami because they're not ATLA characters.they hate anything that isn't aang or related to his show, they always give ATLA characters free pass, alta fans just, hate tlok and its characters

Some people are so attached to the original show that they refuse to give its successor a fair chance

ATLA fans seem more interested in proving that ATLA/atla characters are superior than in appreciating what TLOK brings to the franchise

liking some female characters doesn't automatically mean you can't be misogynistic toward other female characters ,especially when the one you're hating is main character and especially when you're taking toph as an example (who act like boys all the time),and katara(who was hated At some point )

isn't korra fault that,she's aang

why is korra hated?

homophobia %25

misogyny 20%

korra actions 5%

not being aang 50%

Discussion Korra fans, what are your hot takes about this series you love?

Post image

Okay so I intended for this post to be just my own hot take but realised I don't have much to say, so I'll make it about what YOU guys think, what are some of your hot takes and if you see a hot take from a fellow Korra fan you can give your opinions on it.

Since it's not really controversial to say that Book 2 should've been more about the politics of Civil War between Northern and Southern Water Tribes, I'll say that Avatar Wan story was pretty bad idea, mainly because in my view, the origins of bending and the Avatar should've been revealed gradually across multiple series, slowly knowing more and more about the origins of the Avatar cycle and the reveal being in a dedicated series.

Discussion Avatar franchise fandom is where people are mad at a teenage girl for acting her age(she's 17)

i don't get the hate korra gets for being stubborn and getting caught up in romantic drama in seasons 1-2.

korra was literally a 17-year-old girl experiencing her first few weeks outside the training compound.stubbornness and recklessness, especially when it comes to love, are normal for teenagers, and honestly, they're age-appropriate,it's all part of the growing process and learning how to communicate with people as you prepare for adulthood,it's natural for teenagers to get lost in the complexities of love when they first experience these feelings

I agree with you that the conversation back then weren't the best, but the general concept of the love triangle isn't as bad as some portray it

and since we're talking about her age her rebellious attitude toward her overprotective father is also a normal part of growing up, especially for a teenager who's finally experiencing freedom and trying to establish her own identity

and for the race thing ,if i had the avatar state i'd use it all the time ,imagine being late to work or a date, and all that i have to do use it to get there in few minutes

she had a full control over it and suffered so much with her villans ,why can't she have some fun and act her age 🤷🏻‍♂️

Discussion What's a character from the show that people love but you don't like or just hate?

Personally for me it's Opal. I don't hate her but I find her a little overhyped and a plot device to make Lin feel guilty about not forgiving Su and Bolin to question Kuvira more.

(Sign reads: Korra did nothing wrong and even if she did, y’all deserved it)

I cosplay Korra every year but this year for New York Comic Con, with the premiere of Seven Havens, I decided to kick things up a notch and bring this (actually not controversial) sign. Everyone loved it! People even stopped me for in depth conversations.

They called the cosplayers onto the stage before the panel started and someone got this picture of me with my sign!

I just wanted to share!

News Michael DiMartino discusses shelved Legend of Korra project (Seven Havens mention) Spoiler

According to DiMartino, the idea for an apocalypse and Korra's connection to it came from an unused Korra idea he and co-creator Bryan Konietzko had for other Avatar projects. "It was sort of embedded in the cool concept of [Seven Havens]," he said. When Bryan and I started Avatar Studios, we were developing multiple projects, and some of the ideas for Korra [in Seven Havens] came from a Korra thing we were developing. So we kind of knew what had taken place, what caused the cataclysm, so we took some of those ideas and wove them into the series."

....
DiMartino further hinted there's more to the story than what's being told on-screen, regarding Korra's part in all this "That's part of the big mystery of the show — what happened during Korra's time, how she was involved, and why people think she destroyed the world."

I FINALLY GOT IT COMPLETELY DONE

After getting Raava in May, I now have Vaatu accompanying me everywhere (it's still fresh so that's why it looks more vibrant than Raava)

Getting a tattoo related to the series as been a project of mine for as long as I've wanted tattoos, but it's only recently that I finally knew what I wanted.

I've been dealing with depression for awhile now and thought it's hard sometimes, I'm doing what I can to get better.

The legend of Korra, and Korra herself more particularly, have taught me that life isn't always going to be kind to us, but that the best we can do is fight for ourselves and what we believe in.

Korra taught me to believe in myself (even though I still struggle with that sometimes), to stand for what I think is right, to be open to change, to accept who I am and a whole lot more.

Life isn't just black and white, happy or sad, good or bad... it's all of it at once.

There's no sadness without joy, there's no smile without tears, there's no opportunity to do good without some bad...

For me, Raava and Vaatu represent just that.

Allowing myself to cry so I can smile tomorrow, allowing myself to fall so I can stand back up... it's just balance.

My tattoo is now a reminder that I need to find balance in myself, to be truly me.

Discussion Essay About Why I Actually Hope Seven Havens Revisits Vaatu and Why It Feels Clear to Me That Vaatu, by His Very Nature, Would Be FAR More Prone to Character Development, Personality Change, and Growth than Raava Herself. Spoiler

Post image
5 Upvotes

For my fellow Legend of Korra fans specifically, the reason this whole Vaatu discussion interests me is that I think Seven Havens has a real opportunity to revisit one of Book 2’s most controversial ideas without simply pretending the original story was wrong.

Note that I am not arguing that Vaatu was secretly misunderstood or morally good during Korra’s era; the guy we saw was very clearly destructive, malicious, and willing to bring about catastrophic suffering. What interests me is the possibility that the newer lore is beginning to separate Vaatu the individual personality from the cosmic principles he embodies: Chaos, destruction, and now, by contrast with Raava, a necessary counterweight to order and creation.

That distinction actually feels pretty compatible with Korra’s broader approach to its antagonists. Amon, Unalaq, Zaheer, and Kuvira all championed ideas with at least some legitimate foundation be they equality, spirituality, freedom or unit, but they ended up pushing those ideas so far out of balance that they became destructive extremists. In short, to use a famous quote from pop culture, they lived long enough to see themselves become the villains.

In that sense, I think Vaatu could potentially be reexamined through the same lens: not because chaos and destruction are automatically “good,” but because they can still serve necessary purposes when order becomes stagnant, oppressive, or incapable of reforming itself. Book 2 Vaatu could therefore remain exactly as evil as we remember him while still representing a cosmic principle that has more philosophical value than “evil exists because the universe needs a bad guy.”

And that is really what I would love Seven Havens to explore if the Pavi/Nisha theories end up involving Vaatu somehow. I do not want a hard retcon saying that Vaatu was never really bad, and I definitely do not want Dark Avatar 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Instead, what I would love is a canon-compliant expansion: preserve everything LOK established, acknowledge that Vaatu had become catastrophically out of balance due to a variety of factors, and then ask what centuries of new circumstances, rebirth through Raava, and possible connection to a very different human Avatar could actually do to a spirit whose defining chaotic nature is, ironically enough, CHANGE.

More of my arguments and reasoning in the full text of the my essay I am reposting here.
