Islam Supportive Discussion Can Islam and Homosexuality Coexist? Answering a Question with the Qur’an

Today (July 25, 2026), there was an attack at the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride event in Berlin.

In one of the discussions afterward, someone asked:

“Can you as a gay Muslim explain to me how Islam and homosexuality can coexist? I’m sure nearly all Muslims condemn the gays, so acts such as these are of no surprise, so that is all I’d like to know. Not a troll comment, just genuine curiosity.”

(For clarity: I’m not a Muslim. I’m responding because the question is about what the Qur’an teaches, and I haven’t seen anyone answer it from the Qur’an itself.)

Here is what I believe, beginning with the Qur’an itself…

That’s a fair question, and I appreciate that you’re asking it respectfully.

First, it’s important to separate what individual Muslims believe from what the Qur’an actually commands Muslims to do.

The Qur’an repeatedly teaches that human beings are not appointed as judges over one another’s faith or sins.

“Let there be no compulsion in religion.” (Qur’an 2:256)

“So remind. You are only a reminder. You are not a controller over them.” (Qur’an 88:21-22)

“And had your Lord willed, all who are on earth would have believed together. Would you then compel the people to become believers?” (Qur’an 10:99)

The Qur’an also teaches that ultimate judgment belongs to Allah alone.

“Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they differed.” (Qur’an 22:69)

“Then to Us is their return, and upon Us is their account.” (Qur’an 88:25-26)

Regarding relations with people outside Islam, the Qur’an explicitly rejects hostility toward those who are peaceful.

“Allah does not forbid you from being kind and acting justly toward those who have not fought you because of religion and have not driven you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Qur’an 60:8)

Even more broadly, the Qur’an teaches that taking one innocent life is an offense against all humanity.

“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land, it is as if he had slain all mankind; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved all mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32)

So when someone attacks people at a Pride event, that violence cannot be justified by the Qur’an.

The Qur’an consistently commands justice, restraint, and leaves final judgment to Allah.

As for homosexuality itself, Muslims disagree.

Traditional scholars understand the story of the people of Lut as condemning all same-sex sexual relationships.

Progressive Muslims argue that the story is actually about attempted gang rape, sexual violence, humiliation of strangers, coercion, and the rejection of God’s messengers, not about loving, consensual same-sex relationships.

They point out that the men of Sodom are repeatedly described as approaching Lut’s guests with hostile intent, and that the city is condemned for many other sins including oppression and violence.

Under that reading, the story is not a blanket condemnation of gay people or same-sex relationships.

Whether someone accepts the traditional or progressive interpretation, however, the Qur’an does not authorize ordinary Muslims to police, investigate, or punish people for presumed homosexuality or presumed zina.

Judgment belongs to Allah, not to individuals.

So yes, Islam and homosexuality can coexist.

Millions of Muslims identify as LGBTQ, including many who believe they are faithfully following Islam.

Others disagree theologically while still recognizing that the Qur’an commands them to treat others with justice, dignity, and without coercion.

Those are separate questions: what one believes is sinful, and whether one has any authority to judge or harm another person.

The Qur’an answers the second question very clearly: no.

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions!

Here we are going to take some time to go over some of the most common questions we get. This should hopefully help people figure out how to navigate this subreddit and community and how to get the most out of your time here.

We will be posting the common question first. Then the answer underneath.

why can’t I post without community and Reddit karma?

A: we restrict posting to those who have established karma as way to ensure our community is not taken over by bad faith actors.

Basically. In order to make a post you first have to comment (sometimes that means waiting for a comment to get approval) and having that comment be seen and upvoted by other members of this community.

While we do sometimes approve comments slowly. Asking us to hurry up is no guarantee your comment is approved any faster.

Please give us a chance to respond first. Then message us if your post is not approved.

How can you say that LGBT is not haram?

A: Please see our Resource List for a list of various articles and readings that make a strong argument for both the totality of Allah’s love and compassion for us, as well as great arguments for why queer identity is compatible with your faith and identity.

In case you don’t want to read. The broad strokes is that the story of lút is pretty clearly about their immoral behaviors, including rape and adultery out of greed and corruption which were done by the MEN and the WOMEN of the people of Lot (43:44). It does not in anyway reflect or represent a consensual queer relationship and should not be interpreted in that way.

We maintain that the Quran commanded us to respect our selves and our relationships. Not reject people for who they are or what they believe.

We urge you to take in the totality our reading list before attempting to once again make the argument.

The Hadith says…

A: the Quran said:

‎> (٤٤) وَمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ كُتُبٍ يَدْرُسُونَهَا وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ قَبْلَكَ مِنْ نَذِيرٍ

Translation: We did not give them any other books to study, nor did we send to them before you another warner.

This Surah is discussing the usage of other books next to the Quran. Emphasizing that the Quran must remain above all other books. Necessarily that includes Hadiths.

Which as far as we know the prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not want Hadiths to be made. This can also be seen in the first Hadiths being written more than a 100 years after the prophet death.

This makes Hadith fall into the category of books held to the same standard as the Quran despite being commanded by Quran to do the opposite.

Hadith worshippers rely on believing the Quran is either incomplete or imperfect.

As the Quran said:

Translation: When Our clear revelations are recited to them, they say, “This is only a man who wishes to hinder you from what your forefathers used to worship.” They also say, “This ˹Quran˺ is no more than a fabricated lie.” And the disbelievers say of the truth when it has come to them, “This is nothing but pure magic.”

It’s no coincidence that today Muslims continue to struggle to preach faith over culture. And be guided by the faith rather than be tempted with the corruption of hatred and power.

We can add also these questions:

Is LGBT people condemned to hell?

A: No, LGBT people are created the way they are. Verses like 95:8 and 21:47 tell us that Allah is perfectly just and will not do the smallest measure of injustice to anyone. Allah will not punish people for being their true sexual orientation or gender identity, a matter which they did not choose.

Is same sex marriage allowed in Islam?

Yes. Verse 30:21 tells us that one of the signs of Allah is that He created spouses for us, that we might find comfort in them, and has placed love and compassion between spouses. Notice that in this beautiful verse on the benefits of marriage, there is no mention of procreation. The Quran thus recognizes that a marriage can fulfill its divine purpose even if no children are born from the marriage. Hence, the non-procreative nature of same-sex marriages does not mean that they lack value, or that they are not what Allah ordained.

Requiring a homosexual person to remain celibate, or to marry a person of the opposite sex, is effectively a lifelong arbitrary punishment (and a punishment for the other spouse as well, even if he/she is heterosexual). And it is also a lifelong temptation to extramarital sex, which is clearly haram.

Personal Issue I have never been attracted sexually or emotionally to men

I'm 21 years old, and I've known that I'm attracted to women since I was around 10. I've never felt attracted to men, and I can only ever imagine myself being romantically and sexually involved with a woman.
But despite knowing this about myself for so long, I still struggle to accept it because of the religious guilt I've carried with me for years. I constantly find myself fighting my own feelings and desires, even though I know they're a part of who I am.
Every time I think I've finally made peace with myself, I fall back into the same cycle of guilt, depression, and self-hatred. I start questioning why I am the way I am and why something as simple as loving someone has to feel like such an internal battle.
I know my sexuality isn't something I can just change, and deep down, I don't think I even want to change it. I just wish I could exist without feeling so much guilt for something I never chose.
The thought of having to marry a man and spend my life pretending to be someone I'm not fills me with so much despair that it becomes unbearable.
I feel like I'm constantly torn between my faith and who I am, and no matter how hard I try to reconcile the two, I always end up feeling like I'm betraying one side of myself. I don't know how to make peace with that, and I'm exhausted from feeling like I have to fight myself just to exist.

Connections Looking for a serious relationship

Hey everyone! I’m 21M from Hyderabad india, looking to meet a guy who’s genuinely interested in a serious relationship.

I’m 5'11", and I’m looking for someone around my height or taller, preferably around my age or a little older.

I’m into guys who are loyal, caring, emotionally available, and know how to maintain a good conversation. Someone I can talk to about anything, share random thoughts, gossip, laugh over silly things, and support each other through good and bad days.

I want a connection where both people put in equal effort, communicate openly, and genuinely want to get to know each other. I value consistency, honesty, affection, and someone who means what they say.

I’m not really into casual hookups or situationships. I’d rather take my time getting to know someone, see if we vibe, build trust, and hopefully turn that connection into something meaningful and long-lasting.

If you’re from Hyderabad or from any other state in India, that’s completely fine! I’m open to meeting someone who’s genuinely interested in building a serious relationship, regardless of where they’re from.

Feel free to DM me! Let’s talk, get to know each other, and see where things go. ❤️

Question Spiralling in doubts

Hey everyone. I'm 17M from India, and lately I've been caught in a lot of doubt and overthinking about a part of myself that I've struggled to understand and accept.

I've enjoyed wearing sarees and other traditionally feminine clothes for a long time. I'm a guy, and I generally present masculinely in everyday life, but this feminine side of me is genuinely important to me. Wearing these clothes gives me a sense of comfort and peace that's difficult to explain. It's not something I want to simply grow out of or abandon. I've tried pushing it away before, but the feelings keep coming back.

Growing up in a fairly strict Muslim household, I haven't really had the freedom to explore this side of myself openly. That leaves me wondering what my future will look like. I want to be able to build a life, become independent, and eventually have a relationship with someone who accepts me as I am.

And that's where a lot of my doubts begin.

I want a relationship with a girl someday, but I don't want to hide something this important from her. I'd want to be honest before things get serious, rather than develop a deep emotional connection and reveal it much later. At the same time, I'm scared that being open about it will make finding someone compatible much harder, especially in the cultural and religious environment I grew up in.

There are also some personal preferences and curiosities that I worry a future partner might not understand. I don't want to get into explicit details here; what matters is that I'm afraid of being rejected for parts of myself that I don't feel I can simply switch off.

Sometimes I wonder whether I'm overthinking my future, whether I should accept myself more confidently, or whether I'm being unrealistic in hoping to find someone who could genuinely understand me. I don't expect everyone to be comfortable with everything, and I know compatibility goes both ways. I just don't want to feel like I have to choose between being loved and being honest about who I am.

How have you dealt with these doubts? Have you found ways to reconcile your identity with your faith, family background, or hopes for a relationship? And how do you keep yourself from spiralling into the belief that your future is already decided?

I'm not looking for someone to tell me what I should be. I just want to hear from people who might understand what this feels like.

(I would like it if we can be friends or something)

Personal Issue Struggling

Slms everyone.

I know this is not related to LGBT but I am struggling to post on progressive Islam reddit.

So I suspect I might have undiagnosed adhd and for ages I have always struggled with prayer. To the point where I have stopped doing it consistently this year. Maybe one prayer or two if lucky. Years ago at one point I had OCD regarding wudhu and salaah and in later years, I would suffer what I suspect would be executive dysfunction resulting in me delaying prayer for long periods of time. I have tried to keep praying more consistently but I have been struggling.

However I can feel it mentally taking a toll on me. I do not feel at peace, my moods feel terrible and I want to be connected to Allah. Any advice?

Islam & LGBT How to answer those questions and claims about homosexuality and Quran

Assalamualaikum

I'm not queer myself but I do not believe that a merciful god would forbid two people of same gender from loving each other. I still struggle with some objections I've encountered from more traditonal people

  1. Quran frames relationships around heterosexual relationships. Who gives Mahr for example and who gets it in a homosexual relationship?

  2. If god allowed homosexuality he would adress it, say that it's halal, since he is all knowing. Since god only talks about women that men can and cannot marry (2:24-2:25) only heterosexual marriage is accepted

  3. This one bugs me the most. Quran says who men cannot marry, for example their mother. The argument is that this explicitly assumes/means that men only marry women. If a man could marry a man - then god would've said that marrying a father is haram but that everything beyond that is ok.

An often counter argument is that well there is no list of who a women cannot marry, we just use analogical reasoning. I do find that response convincing but only partially. But because in the case of women it still assumes the OPPOSITE gender. Not the same gender

P.s If anything I said is somehow homophobic or offensive I'm deeply sorry. I mean no offense. To me homosexuality will always be permissible - I'd rather leave the religion then follow a religion that forbids it. But I want to know whether the Quran actually forbids it.

Feel free to dm me

Question gift opinions and help please

hello! i’m so sorry in advance if this is the wrong place to ask this!

I am not muslim, but the islamic center in my small upstate new york town is having an opening ceremony for their beautiful new mosque this weekend and I would love some advice on an appropriate gift to bring. We share a neighborhood block and although i am not muslim they are my neighbors and we know each other through passing smiles, the mosque has been under construction for many years and I want to pass along a token of my support and congratulations without making a cultural faux pas or social blunder or accidental offense. Would a bouquet of flowers be welcome? Is there anything I should avoid? I am a woman, should I bring something to cover my head in case I’m invited in? Thank you very much for your time and help!

Question Questions for wlw hijabis! (Non hijabis are welcome to answer as well)

Hello everyone! I really am desperate for answers so I hope someone will comment. So I am a Muslim woman who has identified as bisexual since I was 13 I believe? And i decided to wear the hijab when I was 19 voluntarily, I am now in my 20s.

Although I am struggling with the hijab, I honestly don't ever see myself taking it off. When I first wore it, I became more pious and was at peace with the fact that I will never be in a relationship. Although I am bi, marrying a man is not something I'll probably ever do due to previous trauma and how deeply integrated unconscious misogyny is in a lot (not all but almost all) of Muslim men even if they consider feminists (rare to find anyways lmao). And this is where my problem begins.

I've always believed that homosexuality itself is not a sin but rather the act (so kissing, sex, and so on...) is forbidden. & so I made peace with the fact that I'll always be single but I don't think I'm as okay with it anymore.

I wanted to ask wlw hijabis their thoughts on this, is it truly Haram? If you ever decide to get into a relationship or are already in one, how does it work? Is it purely emotional & not physical? I know this may be invasive so obvs I don't expect full details but I truly want to hear from others because I've recently found myself yearning for love.

Does the hijab hinder your dating life in any way? Do you date Muslims only or are you open to people who don't believe in islam? How do other non Muslim people react when you come out?

I've also seen Muslim women married so how does that work? Is it recognized in islam? And if not then obvs it's zina right? I am scared that even if I find someone accepting of me & shares my beliefs, with time my desires for more will grow.

I am not asking these questions out of judgement but out of a true desire to understand not only others but myself! I honestly don't see anyone who is in a relationship any less & just want to know what the Deen says so I can decide what's okay for me personally. I am moving abroad for my masters to the west next year and I feel like I might have a chance at love since I've seen more queer Muslims come out there.

I don't know but please be kind lol. I've seen the frequently asked questions with answers so I'll check it out but I always wanted to ask but never found any safe space to do so & would love to hear from others (personal stories& experience rather than just broad answers, I guess what I'm looking for is hope that I can experience love like others one day) 🤍🤍

Need Help Make a sincere dua for me, please.

As I heard from a hadith, a strangers dua is incredibly powerful. This is a safe community to me so i believe someone will stop by and make a sincere dua for me. My stepmom and father are in an incredibly abusive relationship, they want to get back together, but must see a sheikh in order to see if it will be valid and if this counts as a third divorce for them. I pray it is a no and even if it isn’t, it doesn’t work out for them and she leaves once she for all with my half brother. I pray for this because of the physical abuse both my stepmother and little brother(from her) have endured from my father. He is incredibly resentful towards them. It’s not like he loves us instead, and he’s done terrible things to us as well, but it’s somehow worse with them. My stepmother does not stand up for herself. All she craves is attention from a man. She takes it out on us when our father doesn’t give us it. My life has been a living hell especially seeing how affected my little brother is from it. Each time she leaves, she comes back with him completely different- calm, not angry and afraid, well mannered, etc.. he is only two. And we won’t be alone with my father, we will be with my grandmother. I feel safer with her as my stepmother is a lot more passive and enabling of my father. Please pray for me, for the sake of my loved ones- my two little brothers, the sake of their safety, and even for the sake of my stepmoms, that this marriage is completely destroyed. Please pray hard with me that my little brother lives with his mother in a much more merciful, loving home far away from my father’s resentful hands. Thank you.

Qur'an & LGBT How do progressist scholars understand this verse ? (The beliveres - 1 to 7)

Assalamualaikum,

After reviewing the work of scholars such as Kugle, Jahangir, and Zahed, a key question remains: How would these scholars (or others in progressive/reformist Islamic thought) interpret and address these specific verses?

Traditional commentaries generally view these verses as explicitly prohibiting any sexual relationships outside of heterosexual marriage, thereby framing non-heterosexual or LGBTQ+ relationships as a transgression.

Here are the verses in English :

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Successful indeed are the believers.

Those who offer their Salât (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness.

And those who turn away from Al-Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk, falsehood, and all that Allâh has forbidden).

And those who pay the Zakât.

And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts)

Except from their wives or (the slaves) that their right hands possess, — for then, they are free from blame;

But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors; (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:1-7)

Thanks for any solid contribution. 😘

Personal Issue segregation making sexuality difficult to figure out

I was born female and I’ve practically had no friendships or familial interactions with any cis men due to our county’s culture of segregation. I was pretty sure I was a lesbian for maybe 6 years. I never wanted to be with a man. I never thought about them. The closest thing really was thinking a guy in my schools theatre practice 4 years ago who looked really similar to me but much nicer + played better than me was cool but I think I was just jealous especially since I’m masc aligned.(?) he got a haircut and looked much different and I immediately stopped to gaf. Consciously I still don’t want to be with one at all. I can’t help but feel that I’m lying behind my back. Pretty much every man here is really masculine and patriarchal so no wonder I wouldn’t have any interest in them. I have this thought maybe when I leave this country I’ll find a decent man who’ll make me actually want to be with men. Or that although I know I’ve been and loved women before I’ll find out that I’ve been lying to myself to “rebel” in some way against the horrible way women are treated. I often gravitate towards more androgynous or male characters in fiction and I’m afraid this is some sign of repression(????). None of this really matters I know I don’t have to have anything figured out but it does feel nice to. I just really Do Not want to be one of those instances where someone says they are proudly lesbian for years then gets with a man one day, but I really do Not want to be with a man so more inclusive labels don’t help much. Not sure if this is the right sub LOL. Has anybody been through this

Being Bi, I never hooked up, I got alot of chances from both genders, but i want one partner for life.

Dating a boy is difficult for me coz of my faith, and dating a straight girl is like lying about myself to her for my whole life.

I want to date a bi girl or straight girl who accepts me, with whom I can share everything without any filter and faking sexuality.

But it is very difficult to find a bi girl as well as I had a bad experience with apps. Not sure what to do.

Personal Issue My virtual coming out

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,
I’m writing this because I feel the need to do a "virtual coming out."
I’m a young Muslim guy living in Europe. Over time, I’ve discovered that I love wearing lingerie and dressing up like a femboy. Bisexually/sexually speaking, I feel equally submissive toward both men and women.
It’s definitely a complex path to navigate. I try not to overthink all the fatwas or religious debates surrounding this, and instead, I’m just trying to live my truth in my own personal way , discreetly, respectfully, and without causing any friction in public.
I haven’t met or told any other Muslims about this side of me yet. I’m sharing my story here in the hope of connecting with like-minded people or anyone who is interested in talking, sharing experiences, or simply having a respectful conversation.
