I'm looking at the utilities sector, thinking about establishing more of a position in VST.

Interested in other investors interpretation of this sector, not absolutely specific to Data Centres.

First Time Investors

I'm such a control freak but I'm freaking out trying to navigate the investments I've made.

My sister say the reason why I'm going bonkers is because I won't allow the professionals who are qualified to handle these investments do their job...I'm learning a lot through trial and error but thank goodness I've not lost anything yet...

My theory is why pay someone to o do what I can do myself.. lol...

Stir crazy over here...any suggestions?

I really need some feedback and advice...

What would you do if you had an unexpected 100k come to you? Assume that there's no mortgage or debt to pay off.

When does more due diligence stop being useful?

One thing I've seen after years of looking at investments is that there always seems to be more information that I could gather. I could study another financial model. I could watch the market for another week. I could consider yet another scenario. Analysis paralysis, right?

As I’ve become a more active, professional investor, I've become much more interested in identifying the few assumptions that really determine whether an investment works. For example, what has to go right? What happens if revenue comes in below expectations? What if costs are higher or the timeline is longer? What would make me regret the investment even if the original thesis sounded reasonable?

Sure, I still want good information, but I don't think perfect certainty is a realistic standard. Eventually you have to decide whether you understand the opportunity and its downside well enough to act.

One other thing that I’ve found is that continuing to research can sometimes create the illusion that uncertainty is disappearing when you're really just adding more information around the same unanswered question.

I’d love to hear how you recognize the point where additional due diligence is genuinely useful versus simply delaying a decision.

how Meta and other companies' Special Purpose Vehicles are just helping the AI bubble

Please watch this video for context before you read my raw thoughts

You know what happens generally - all these companies that create SPVs generally issue bonds against SPV and its revenue and transfer the ultimate risk to bondholders. That is if this venture fails - meta(owns 20% of SPV) and blueowl(owns 80%) will lose their equity but majority of the money invested in the SPV that is close to 27B$ is from the bondholders. So the bondholders have some risk and are supposed to lose this money.

Meta since it owns less than 50%, it is allowed to not show it in balance sheet and that is why it brought in blueowl here to take up equity.(Genius loophole)

Who are the bondholders here - PIMCO and Blackrock. These are the institutional investors who get the money from Public and Corporate pension funds, 401k and retirement accounts and Insurance company general accounts - so ultimately the normal public. BlackRock is still investing 3B$ from 10T$+ so it is relatively safe but PIMCO has high concentration risk.

Now here a twist comes - Meta is the guarantor that is if assets are not enough to payback bondholders, Meta is liable to cover it. So these bondholders are safe as long as Meta doesn't go bankrupt.

So if the risk of bankruptcy is essentially on Meta first how can this entire transaction go round and round and round to make it off-balance sheet for meta. And where does accounting and financial prudence go🤦

I want to bring into question the guts of credit rating agencies who justify giving an A+ rating to this SPV. It should write how this structure is just to keep it off-books for Meta in bold in its report. All these players who do not take a stand against all such financial vehicles are helping the bubble. If Meta and all other companies would have to clearly include it with their normal accounts, we would not be causing a bubble that might erupt in the coming years!

E*trade account for grandkid

We are thinking of opening an E*trade account for each grandkid. They are both in their 20's. (Not little kids). We were thinking of starting each account with $5000, then adding to it on their birthdays. What I am looking for are tips on having some rules. We are hoping the kids will get interested in investing and can see how it can grow. We would start each kid with a couple of stocks - something like Apple and maybe another tech stock that they would recognize. We would both be able to login and look at it... we would perhaps limit them from taking the money out for maybe 5 years, so they could see it grow and make their own decision to not touch the money. Just looking for some rules and some suggestions you might have.... Thx

Should I sell or hold micron?

I got lucky with micron. I have 30k profit in Robinhood and 100k in 401k brokerage.

Should I sell and diversify them or hold? I have mortgage at 6%, it is very tempting for me to book profit and pay towards principle.

Where to buy treasuries that are easily liquid?

Treasuries are looking attractive now. I had an account through Public but theyre changing their structure and their fees are also quite heavy too. Any other options where I could buy treasuries and then liquidate.

Best way to invest roughly 50k

Hey yall. Had a family member pass away and left behind some money. Its all extra and I was wondering what's the best way to invest with low risk. All I can think of is opening a brokerage account and parking it. Not sure what the gains or timeliness would be but I could invest for 10-15 years before needing to cash out. What would you do?

If you had $150,000 to put in an investment what would you put it in. Back story: my dad was just put in assisted living- will be drawing from this amount , besides his little social security that he gets. Should I just put this in a money market right now so it grows a little bit have access to it. Haven’t sold his house yet, but that money maybe a cd - for a year?

Where to invest

I'm going to receive some inheritance.

It's going to top up both my TFSA and my RRSP.

Where do I invest the rest?

Unlike an RRSP where you can redistribute the assets. I'm thinking an ETF and letting it sit for 10 years.. (approx retirement timeline). I'm scared about buying something and having to sell it so I may buy something else. I will continue to top up my TFSA and RRSP from the unregistered investments.

Teach me what am I missing.

Buying a single ETF and holding for 10 years seems scary. like it's a crap shoot. I can't sell ever or get hit with capital gains.

All good funds have turned giant AUMs, what to choose?

So, i was trying to find good equity mutual funds, after researching a lot I have come to conclusion that no fund is best, but a good is basically that which have given positive alpha with controlled beta and it should have one of the highest Sharpe in the category, also 3y 5y 7y & 10y rolling returns should beat corresponding index and as far as possible consistent. Deviation should be low, fund manager should have good long history and also should have decent past association with the particular fund, lower drawdown should be low as compared to other funda of the category, capture ratios should be among the best in the category.

On the basic of the above observations, we can filter the funds and reach to top 5-6 funds in each equity category.

I selected to invest in combination of Large&Mid Cap Fund + Small Cap fund, with a horizon of 10-15 years. Finally, I got top 5-6 funds both categories, and when I was making up my mind to select my fund in each of these categories, I came to realise that there is one more factor the 'AUM', and the funds that I had selected for myself have become so huge that their future in upcoming years would be so difficult, like in Small cap category Bandhan is presently one of the best but it is approx 35000 cr fund, Nippon is also very good and it is even bigger with AUM 85000cr. So, I have think it is better to stay away from these funds, but apart from them Nippon Quant are doing great but they have huge fluctuation and Highly risk compared to Bandhan, ITI is also doing good but is very new.....

What to do in this case?

Ditching ?

I was heavily invested in crypto, I made a lot of money off of it too, however various reasons made me distrustful. I am not confident in crypto anymore even though I invested only in bitcoin.

I wanted to transfer all of my crypto into physical gold. I just want different perspectives, should I do it? Or should I leave my crypto what do yall think

At the end of the day I’ll make my own newly informed decision, I just wanted some discussion about it

Reading a specific edition of The Intelligent Investor

Hi all, I am just starting my journey into investing, and being the book nerd that I am, reading any and all books I can find. One that came highly recommended was The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. I was told to make sure to read the 1965 edition, as this was the most "coherent" version of Graham's writings before things got muddled up by successive edits.

Is this factually correct, and does it even matter? I am aware that there will be sections of the book not relevant to today (and don't worry, because of my newness I've started with the VT & Chill mantra; I may even stay there even after my readings) but I do want to spend time getting the full value of what Benjamin had to share.

Is there a best all rounded ETF out there?

With the amount of brokers around and lowered fees and ease for Aussies to invest in US markets the number of ETFs are overwhelming to say the least.

So far top of mind are Vanguard.

Just a handful of the ones of interest:
- SCHD
- VYM
- VIG
- IVOO
- VB

Essentially if you have a 20 year investment horizon how do you play this? Do you go risk on? And what are the most popular ETFs how do you even find this out? Each day I discover a new one.

I see this as better than keeping money in the bank for “savings”. Of course an emergency fund is aside.

Opinions about investment

I want to ask if you trust Revolut for investing money in VUAA S&P 500

every month, e.g., a small amount to get a return after 10 years. Has anyone done this?"

Best investment for under 30 year old

Brother is just under 30. No assets to his name. $200k or so in savings.

EDIT - the plan is to DCA on red days $1-2k until we can get to 1 BTC. I think everyone is thinking we are buying one outright. I believe $150k in BTC and $50k cash buffer is a good mix for 2-5 years and then cash in and decide to buy the home he plans to live in.

In this position with no kids and no mortgage. What would you do? Still living with parents atm.

I’ve told him to buy a whole bitcoin and sit and chill for a potential 2x or more from current levels.

Stocks look topped. AI boom can keep going but a correction sets him back 2-5 years in waiting for prices to go higher again?

Gold not really an investment but inflation hedge but has had a mammoth run.

Property has cooled and this is the ultimate goal and he would like to buy an investment property and eventually live in it but needs a bigger cash buffer as min. Properties out in the south west Sydney are $1-1.2 million for entry.

What is there actually to invest in that represents value to the next generation. I keep coming back to BTC as sound money and in 5 years will outperform all the other assets I’m convinced.

Happy to hear what Reddit thinks.

My thoughts are concentration builds wealth and diversification preserves it. Before people start telling me about % allocations.

Cheers,
Steve
