Hey all,
A friend of mine was driving to work this morning and got T boned by a school bus. No injuries thankfully, however the friend's truck took some good damage. Police were called, as well as insurance.
The friend in the truck was driving on a straight road (no stoplights or anything) and the bus pulled out of a parking lot and t boned their passenger side of their truck. This is in MN which I believe is a no fault state, but there is clearly some fault here.
The bus driver gave their company insurance information, however it is not a school owned bus. Seems like its a company contracted to run the school routes. There was a nearby bystander who saw the whole thing and gave his contact info because he wanted to be able to vouch for the bus was completely at fault if the need came up.
Oddly enough, when my friend eventually made it to work, one of their coworkers heard about the accident and mentioned they saw a wreckless driving bus recently but could not get a good picture of the company name on the bus, just the bus number. Turns out it was the same exact bus number as the one that hit the truck this morning. No saying whether it was the same driver or not, but my gut tells me it was.
Having never been involved with something like this, what would my friends next steps be? They've contacted their insurance and the truck will be going into the shop soon to evaluate the damage. They are still pretty shaken up hence me writing this to try to help gather some information and next steps. Do they just let their insurance handle it from here? Time to lawyer up? My concerns are two things: 1, although they feel fine now, I've heard injuries can start to pop up days after the event. 2, even in a no fault state, I have some concerns that they will still end up on the hook financially for something. Either the truck is totaled and they have to pay out of pocket for a new one less any payment from insurance, or deductible, or something.
We do plan on filing a complaint (even though we're not sure it'll go anywhere) with the company that runs this bus. Seems this driver may have a habit of reckless driving, which is super not OK especially if you have kids on board.
Definitely not looking for a quick payday here- just simply looking for some protection for any potential medical issues that arise, or financial costs incurred due to the accident. Friend does have full coverage with rental insurance, and I would have to imagine the company has some good insurance through their provider, so hopefully won't turn into an underinsured situation.
Again, this is new to us so just trying to make sure we do things by the book in the best way possible. Thanks!
