Weekend's here. If there's something going on in your city, a mela, an event, a good place to eat, live music, whatever, drop it below. Someone in your city is probably free and bored and has no idea it's happening.
Just say your city and what's up. Doesn't need to be fancy.
This is a weekly automated post. If you have questions, concerns, or need to reach the mod team for anything, message us at r/Gujarat modmail.
r/gujarat • u/orientsoul • Aug 03 '26
Idea is simple.
Every week I post one city. You comment your favourite nashta place there. Most upvoted comment wins.
*Rules for what counts
The bhajiya kaka on the corner. The vada pav guy outside the bus stand. The gathiya shop that opens at six and shuts by eleven. The khaman lari your father has been going to since college. The dabeli guy with no board and no name.
Not restaurants. Not anything with air conditioning. Not any chain. If it has a Zomato listing with 2000 reviews it is already famous and does not need us.
Tell us the name if it has one, the landmark, what to order, and roughly what it costs.
What the winner gets?
Once a spot wins, one redditor goes there, eats, films it, and posts a vlog. How the place is, how the food is, how the kaka reacts to a camera. Nothing polished needed, phone video is fine.
I will pay Rs 500 for that vlog. Small money, I know. It covers the nashta and the petrol and that is honestly the whole point.
If you already live in that city and want to make it, comment and I will sort it out.
We start small and work up to the big ones.
Ahmedabad and Surat will be a mess of a thread whenever we get to them, so those come later. Starting with smaller towns where the answers will actually be specific.

Upvote whichever you want as week one.

The road in India that disappears straight into the sky.
This is the Road to Heaven in Kutch, Gujarat. It passes through the surreal landscape of the Great Rann of Kutch and leads to an island where, during sunset, the sky and the land seem to blend into one, creating a stunning reflection.

Am I the only one fed up with these milk delivery bikes, or has anyone else experienced this?
I see these milk delivery guys everywhere in the city, riding bikes with huge steel milk cans attached to the sides. What frustrates me the most is how recklessly some of them drive through traffic, constantly swerving between vehicles as if road safety rules don’t apply to them.
My biggest concern is the steel cans and metal frames attached to their bikes. In an accident, these big metal structures could cause serious injuries to other road users, while the "દૂધ વાળો" might be relatively protected by the setup itself. Why is this kind of modification allowed in the first place?
And don’t even get me started on the horns! Some of them have extremely loud horns that sound like a train. They are painfully loud and can genuinely hurt your ears.
What I find frustrating is that traffic police seem quick to penalise people for loud exhausts, modified vehicles, and other violations, yet these bikes often appear to get away with reckless driving, excessively loud horns, and potentially unsafe vehicle modifications.
Is this setup even legal under Indian traffic laws? Are these steel frames and side-mounted cans permitted, and are there any rules regulating the type of horns they can use?
I’m not against milk delivery workers doing their jobs. They have every right to earn a living. But that doesn’t mean road safety rules should be ignored.
Why aren’t traffic police taking stricter action against these violations? Has anyone else noticed this, and is there any way to report such vehicles to the traffic authorities?

Women from the Maher (Mer) community of Porbandar and Junagadh in Gujarat participate in the traditional Garba Raas (known as Mer Raas or Rahda) while heavily adorned with a large amount of gold jewelry.
When mothers and sisters of the Maher community (Mer caste) from the Porbandar region of Saurashtra and across Gujarat play Raas while wearing traditional attire and gold jewelry worth lakhs and crores of rupees, the sight is truly wonderful and magnificent.
In the Maher caste, gold jewelry is considered highly sacred and a symbol of prestige. These ornaments, preserved generation after generation, enhance the grandeur of Maher culture during festivals, wedding occasions, and especially during Navratri and religious celebrations.
The following ornaments are the main attractions among the special jewelry that the sisters of the Maher community wear on their bodies while playing Raas:
• Vedhla: Large gold-beaded earrings worn in the ears, weighing 25 to 35 grams or more per single pair.
• Zumana: This is a very heavy and traditional gold necklace worn around the neck. Its weight can range from 500 grams to over 600 grams (more than half a kilo of gold), and it is the pride of Maher culture.
• Other Jewelry: Apart from these, the sisters adorn themselves with ancient and precious ornaments made of pure gold, such as Dodi, Nath, Chudla, Hansdi, Kanthli, Troda, Kambi, and Kadla.
During this Raas, the sisters worship the Goddess by adorning themselves not just with jewelry, but also in their traditional attire such as Dharavo, Kapdu, and Odhnu (Ghatadi).

Maa Chamunda represents the divine power that destroyed the demons Chanda and Munda. She is a fierce manifestation of Goddess Durga and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Located in Chotila, in the Surendranagar district of Gujarat, the sacred Chamunda Mataji Temple is one of the most revered Shakti shrines in the state. Many devotees worship Maa Chamunda as their family deity (Kuldevi) and seek her divine protection and blessings.
The temple of Shri Chamunda Mataji is situated atop Chotila Hill. Devotees traditionally climb approximately 600 steps to reach the hilltop shrine and seek the blessings of the Goddess. According to Hindu mythology, the name *Chamunda* originated from the Goddess's victory over the demons Chanda and Munda. Devotees believe that offering prayers to Maa Chamunda brings courage, prosperity, protection, and well-being to their families. The hilltop temple is a powerful symbol of faith and devotion, attracting pilgrims throughout the year.
Both Chaitra Navratri and Sharad (Ashwin) Navratri are celebrated with great religious fervour at Chotila. During Navratri, the temple witnesses a significant influx of devotees, with the atmosphere filled with prayers, aarti, devotional chants, and the resounding cries of *“Jai Mataji!”* Pilgrims travel from different parts of Gujarat, Mumbai, and other states to seek the Goddess's blessings. Chotila Dham is not merely a pilgrimage destination; it is also an enduring symbol of Gujarat's Shakti worship, spiritual heritage, and rich cultural traditions.

Did you know about this 200-year-old Navratri tradition hidden in the narrow lanes of the Old City?
Every year on the eighth night (Ashtami), the men of the Barot community in Sadu Mata Ni Pol (Shahpur, Ahmedabad) trade their usual clothes for vibrant sarees, makeup, and jewelry to perform Sheri Garba.
But this isn't just a performance it’s a profound act of penance and devotion. According to local folklore, in the 18th century, a woman named Saduben (Saduba) sought the community's protection from an invading Mughal nobleman. When the men failed to defend her, resulting in the tragic loss of her child, she cursed them and committed sati.
To appease her spirit and lift the curse, the community built a temple in her honor. For centuries, the men have danced gracefully in women's attire as an apology. Today, it has evolved into a beautiful celebration of gratitude, where fathers even dance while holding their children to thank Sadu Mata for breaking the generational curse!
