Women from the Maher (Mer) community of Porbandar and Junagadh in Gujarat participate in the traditional Garba Raas (known as Mer Raas or Rahda) while heavily adorned with a large amount of gold jewelry.
When mothers and sisters of the Maher community (Mer caste) from the Porbandar region of Saurashtra and across Gujarat play Raas while wearing traditional attire and gold jewelry worth lakhs and crores of rupees, the sight is truly wonderful and magnificent.
In the Maher caste, gold jewelry is considered highly sacred and a symbol of prestige. These ornaments, preserved generation after generation, enhance the grandeur of Maher culture during festivals, wedding occasions, and especially during Navratri and religious celebrations.
The following ornaments are the main attractions among the special jewelry that the sisters of the Maher community wear on their bodies while playing Raas:
• Vedhla: Large gold-beaded earrings worn in the ears, weighing 25 to 35 grams or more per single pair.
• Zumana: This is a very heavy and traditional gold necklace worn around the neck. Its weight can range from 500 grams to over 600 grams (more than half a kilo of gold), and it is the pride of Maher culture.
• Other Jewelry: Apart from these, the sisters adorn themselves with ancient and precious ornaments made of pure gold, such as Dodi, Nath, Chudla, Hansdi, Kanthli, Troda, Kambi, and Kadla.
During this Raas, the sisters worship the Goddess by adorning themselves not just with jewelry, but also in their traditional attire such as Dharavo, Kapdu, and Odhnu (Ghatadi).
