PURCHASE !NGD 15/10/2026!

Today I purchased a Second Hand Hamer Standard Explorer-Shape guitar. It has a maple vaneer, Cherryburst finish, cream binding, Seymore Duncan - Duncan Designed pickups. I am a long term Metallica fan, more specifically James Hetfield. It feels like a dream to own an Explorer knowing James' affiliation with the style.

This is the first guitar I've purchased with my own funds, I am 16m and worked my first job to earn the money, and applied and got my second job recently, I purchased this guitar as a pat on the back for getting the new job. I cant wait to keep playing this guitar, it sounds incredible.

Finally, after saving some dough for quite some time, I was able to buy an American Fender. This is my 3rd Fender, but the only American one.

I bought it in Guitar Center in Miami and brought it back with me to Brazil, that's why it was packed like that (we all know how airlines treat guitars).

GEAR Why are the saddles staggered in different positions?

10+ years of using Floyd rose floating bridges and i’ve never know why the saddles are staggered like this on new guitars etc. Just switching my genuine floyd rose over to my new guitar. I use 10-52 gauge strings if that matters but any help is much appreciated

DISCUSSION Record EVERYTHING

I literally can't stress this enough

I'm in the joke band with two guitarists, my friend who is generally new to guitar and myself who is more advanced.

He tells me so often that he came up with a new riff or melody or whatever but he forgot it

It's not just him, I see it so much that people come up with fire ideas but forget to write it down and it just disappears from their head, It also happened to me at the beginning

Please, if you are writing songs, please record them if you don't want want to forget them

Your brain is here to give you ideas, not to keep them

GEAR Yamaha Revstarita

I love my Revstar but the neck humbucker sounded a bit meh. I just couldn't get creamy, detailed cleans out of it.

Now it's perfect. Also turns out Revstar's boost mode works surprisingly well with the Filtertron.

QUESTION Someone sells the great guitar nearby me that has some custom MIDI input. What does it imply?

Post image

Never seen that before. I bet it is for some synth or something. Anybody has encountered this? What does it imply for electronics and body of the guitar? Am I right that this installation looks somewhat amateurish? Can I uninstall this? How much can I negotiate based on this?

GEAR NGD, My first decent guitar, a JS22 Surfcaster

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

I'm primarily a bassist, specifically alternative and progressive. I had two crappy guitars. I decided to get a guitar that's actually fun to play, and has a better sound. This guitar is really good for the price of $350. My local store does a pretty good job of keeping their stock set up, so it's even better than it likely would be out of the box. The bridge saddles are a bit high but the neck relief is perfect and the frets are very even. This thing sounds so good, especially through my Helix. I will be recording with this in my music as much as my limited skills allow.

QUESTION 7 String Electric Suggestions, $1000 or Under

I'm looking for a 7 string for my groove/nu-metal band. We play in drop B. I'm wondering what any seasoned 7 string players in adjacent genres would suggest. Also, if you have experience with the Mid price range Jackson Juggernaut, Jackson surfcaster, or any Ltds in that price range lmk what you think of them. I really like how those guitars look, but I don't want to pull the trigger on them without hearing some positive things about them. Thanks!!

QUESTION Stadium/arena acts using modelers?

Who are some big names that have dropped tube amps and begun using modeling? Off the top of my head:

Metallica

John Mayer

Also feel free to name guys like Bonamassa or Mike McCready who are using modelers alongside tube amps.

I found a nice piece of 1x6 red oak laying around the jobsite the other day and used it to mount my guitar hangers. I goofed and made them a touch too close so ill have to move the outer hangers a ½" further out, but I'm glad to finally have them hanging.

From left to right

Epiphone Les Paul Custom in Antique Ivory

Jackson Rhoads RRXMG

Dean Thoroughbred in Oceanburst

Stadium Acoustic (randomly gifted to me)

I have a Fender Hendrix Strat on loan right now and a Jackson Concorde that's in transit to me as well. They'll live in cases, but I'll get some pics up when they are in my hands.

DISCUSSION Once a drummer, always a drummer…

• Upvotes

It’s been (checks notes) 3.5 months that I started playing the classical guitar, on my M’s backpacker steel string guitar, with nylon strings.

You know how, in Hs, the drummer kids would always drum roll on the desk with crazy cool improve and syncopation?

Lately, my routine is this: while my food cooks or something, I do the stretch warm ups and finger exercises for the guitar. I then stretch my arms, wrists and fingers. I also massage the muscles, with warm hands. I then pick up the guitar, tune the low E and relatively tune, then tune with a clip on vibration tuner. I then hook up the headphones/metronome.

I usually do some 1-2-3-4/1-3/2-4 and that but backwards, with the left hand on the frets, either to quarter notes or even slow triplets or 16th notes. I usually do that for literally 15 minutes. My intonation and dexterity is improving! Though I’ve always had nimble fingers.

But then, this has been happening! After playing warm ups for 30-45 minutes, I click a drumbeat or a metronome running triplets or 16th notes and just play.

Lately, I feel like my brain is really throwing the “Yerr a drummar, Joe!” And my fingers are really happy to comply. It’s been real fun!

I haven’t hit “play metronome on headphones/Record Audio” yet, like I usually do, but it’s about time that I do!

Can anyone else who -started out as a drummer then played guitar- relate?

Also, my nails haven’t grown back in yet but I’ve made do, I can use P-I-M-A fingers for my right hand. No hand mutes or percussion wraps yet. My guitar is still my pweshus delicate baby!

DISCUSSION I can't help but feel that the new FG7 Yamaha is going to break the market

Post image

So, FS9 owner here, I probably have different expectations because I actually own one and the main sub doesn't care about acoustic guitars, nevermind ones in this price range.

The 9's are superlative. Loud, harmonically rich, loud, balanced, loud, dynamic, really loud, kinda maybe dry and vintage compared to an L series. They bring some volume along with very controlled tones and dynamics. That's probably the trick Adirondack spruce top sourced from Boucher. It's also perfectly finished and a joy to play with the soft V neck. Whatever. Boutique guitar owners either shopped it or wish they did and the purists get mad that it sounds really good. I like it or I would have sold it by now.

Now there's a guitar that's half the price with a sitka top, poly finish and less binding detailing. I would have probably bought that if it were available, sight unseen, and been happy. ~2 grand for something that sounds like or better than your average 18 series martin and also comes in rosewood to boot if you care.

I don't know, there are very few reviews and videos and I'd want to hear it in the room, but I have the thing it looks like and know why I got it.

Anyone who's been paying attention, what are your thoughts?

GEAR NGD: Came back from Japan with this insanely well priced beauty. Finally finished upgrades and setup.

Went to Japan and had to get a guitar. Played a number of models up and down in price at all the different shops in Ochanomizu. Happened into the ESP workshop where I saw this gorgeous Aria Nashville T-style guitar and couldn't believe it was new at $246.

At that price there was no way I could say no and it even came with a gig bag and was disassembled for me. Even found a ridiculous strap for it at a nearby discount store.

Now it's finally finished. Swapped out the Aria pickups for Fender Hot Tex Mex set and put in a Seymour SSL-6 in the middle. Found out not long after that the cavity in the middle would need to be enlarged to fit the pickup and that Seymour winds their single coils opposite of Fender...and I bought a reverse wind. Turns out I unknowingly put in an OoP middle pickup that's engaged with a push/push (swapped out the stock push/pull) and it sounds unbelievable. Luthier put in a custom bone nut as well.

Such a cool piece, at such a low starting price, and looks gorgeous. Definitely worth the $2.2k roundtrip airfare.

NEWBIE 2 years of guitar progression

First, thanks to everyone on this sub who's given me advice over the past two years. I've posted here a couple of times and have picked up some really good tips that have helped me alot.

Also, a shoutout to my guitar teacher, who's taught me a lot more than I've actually paid for. Really appreciate everything I've learned from him.

This is Dear Jimi by Mateus Asato. I know I'm lacking the feel and dynamics at the moment, and that's something I'm trying to work on. I'm trying to play with a similar approach to Mateus, while also experimenting and putting my own feel into it rather than just copying him.

But i keep messingthe actual song by hitting wrong notes or messing up the timing, so I'd appreciate any feedback on what I should focus on improving.

Sorry about the audio quality. I'm using Neural DSP and the sound is being recorded from my headphones maxed volume to my Android, so it doesn't really capture the actual tone.

NEWBIE I feel like I should be further than I am.

I love guitar, but im not a fan of music like soft melodic switching, its usually too easy. Ive been able to pick up on it very fast. But I have been practicing heavier music and no matter what, my fingers cant move fast enough? I play on acoustic so my fingers often feel weird when im around fret 12 and up. But I have been practicing, and the rhythm is never too bad, but whenever I practice my fingers lag. I just feel like I should be doing it quick, or should be able to play better. I remember I was able to get Barre chords in like 2 months without any buzzing, my girlfriend has been playing awhile and is good with heavier music, and im really good at rhythm guitar and small solo parts but I have been practicing faster solos and I feel like I should be better. Is there anything I can do to improve?

GEAR Comic book inspired pickguard

Thumbnail gallery
570 Upvotes

I took some pieces of an old Calvin and Hobbes book (great strip, was my childhood) and glued them on to my pickguard… results speak for themselves

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
(I got all of these at a local Michael’s)
-180/240 grit sandpaper
-Matte Modpodge (Paper on paper)
-Aleene’s Tacky Glue (Paper on plastic)
-A brush for the glue
-A brush for the modpodge
-Exacto knife
-Scissors
-Some good music to listen to. I played Madvillainy by MF DOOM and Illmatic by Nas

(Make sure to take the pickguard off the guitar first, but I’m sure that’s a given)

HOW I DID IT

Cutting the paper:
I gathered the pages of the book I wanted and gently ripped them out. I laid the pickguard over the page and used an exacto knife to cut it into the perfect shape. After I had a first layer, I used scissors to cut smaller pieces for the next layers to glue them on top of layer one.

Gluing them on:
I took the blank pickguard and sanded it down with 180-240 grit sandpaper. This is so the glue had a good surface to stick the paper to. Without it, it wouldn’t stick very well. Then I used a foam brush to spread a thin layer of glue on the pickguard surface. Then I stuck layer one on. To let it dry I flipped it so the back of the guard was showing and put something heavy on top, like a book or something. I used two drills because the bases were pretty wide but doesn’t really matter. After waiting maybe 60 seconds I used a different brush to spread the modpodge on top, and started adding the other pieces. Rinse and repeat.

If you end up doing this, please share with me! Thanks for giving this post your attention, I had a blast making this and it looks sick
