QUESTION I'm a year into learning but my progress is terrible. How do you learn?

Tl;dr: idk what to do when I pick up the guitar

Reading tabs gets boring, reading sheet music is boring, music theory is too deep idk where to anchor myself in theory.

Most of my progress is just knowing cowboy chords from Yousician.

CAGED is fucking greek to me too.

Practicing scales gets boring after 1 minute.

My tutor mostly had me just reading sheet music and plucking 1 string at a time to play melodies, I suppose that's alright for like 20 minutes but I just feel like I'm missing out on chords. I wanna know how to recognise and strum chords over multiple octaves. On piano it's so easy with the black and white key contrast to find triads, takes only a few seconds for me to find a note, but on guitar I have 6 strings to count through and then I have to pick which will be the root and what frets I should mute or reach and bla bla yadda yadda its just overwhelming

Been wanting to get some studio monitors as I need an accurate depiction of what I record on guitar (mainly metal and rock stuff) in reaper. And of course to enjoy my amp plugins. Budget is 0-500 usd.

I tried to improve on all the feedbacks on my last post, suggest me some more improvements.

Also I want to learn how to pick a song by ear how could I train that? I learnt scales and a bit of music theory but I'm not exactly able to play songs by ear.

DISCUSSION I don't understand Relic fans

• Upvotes

To each their own, we all have personal preferences. But anytime I mention that I like my guitars to look new, to be made of materials that don’t show age like carbon fiber and stainless steel, relic lovers come out in giant groups to shun me.

No one likes rusted cars. If you had a Ferrari, you wouldn’t let any of the parts get bad. You constantly maintain it, and anything that gets worn out gets replaced. Ship of Theseus type of situation.

There’s an appeal to guitars that look new. If you raised a human whose never seen or heard a guitar before, hand them a relic guitar and a new guitar, they’re going to prefer the new one. The only reason people like Relic guitars is because other guitarists tell them it’s cool to like, we are conditioned into it.

Not to mention the whole argument between artificial relics and real ones.

QUESTION Steinberger gearless tuner knob not working. Why could this be?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Rotating the tuning knob doesn’t change the string’s pitch or move the mechanism at the top of the tuner.

Initially, the knob was coming loose and falling off, so I tried tightening the small set screws. However, the knob still didn’t seem to engage with the shaft underneath.

At first, the knob would turn slightly clockwise before getting stuck. After turning it counterclockwise, it would become unstuck and could then spin indefinitely in either direction without affecting the string’s pitch, as shown in the video.

I also noticed some small metal shavings when removing one of the set screws, and its tip appeared slightly damaged.

QUESTION Should I buy this guitar as a bassist in a band?

I am currently a bassist in a band. I own both a guitar and a bass but neither of them are very good. I recently found a used schecter omen 6 for sale for $300 and am considering purchasing it considering my current guitar is way worse than my bass. I informed my guitarist of my idea and he hates that I am considering buying this, he thinks I should ONLY play bass and not even consider buying this guitar. Should I buy this guitar and continue learning both instruments or forget the guitar and just continue on playing bass? Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

QUESTION Someone sells the great guitar nearby me that has some custom MIDI input. What does it imply?

Never seen that before. I bet it is for some synth or something. Anybody has encountered this? What does it imply for electronics and body of the guitar? Am I right that this installation looks somewhat amateurish? Can I uninstall this? How much can I negotiate based on this?

QUESTION anyone else have nails that grow over the fingertips like this? having trouble not getting buzzing.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I practiced guitar for many years as a kid and got decent enough to play and jam but after taking a break and trying again i feel like my fingernails get in the way of me pressing down the strings. I think i have mild clubbing or something.

Its like i have to intentionally use bad technique and not bridge to have the pad of my fingertip press down the strings before my nail hits the fretboard. This results in buzzing and generally sloppy sounding playing.

Anyone else dealt with this? Its the furthest i can cut my nails down and it sorta feels like its not worth playing guitar anymore because of this. Am i just imagining things or is this a real thing.

QUESTION My string keeps breaking :(

I'm having yet another guitar issue. My guitar's high e string broke right at the saddle while I was playing a rather fast-paced song. I replaced the string for the first time ever. The next day, while playing that exact same song again, the new string broke yet again in the exact same place. What do I do?

QUESTION Broken Guitar, not sure if it’s worth playing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

sorry for the long video. I recently inherited a nylon classical guitar from my grandparents. It’s broken, this is a guitar that’s already pretty old. it’s most definitely a cheap guitar, but I’ve been using it to practice when I don’t have my acoustic/electric guitar around. I want to start learning pieces specifically for nylon guitar, and this is the option I have right now but the constant buzzing bothers me greatly. i want to save up a bit to buy a new guitar but idk if you guys think its unplayable and I should buy sooner rather than later.

DISCUSSION Not Having Enough Motivation

Hello everyone as the title says. It feels like i dont have motivation into playing Guitar. I got my guitar in May (I just turned 17 if that matters) so im still a beginner. Maybe this is just a me thing but i feel like i dont have the motivation. I practice everyday but there would be days where I would practice an hour, hour an half, or there would be days where I only practice 5 mins and instantly get bored. I want to get good at this thing i really do. I wanna be as good as i can be but im not putting in the hours as i need to be. I do have school so that could be holding me back but when im done with homework and stuff i still have alot of free time and it feels like im not progressing and i get distracted to quick.

I dont have practice “routine” mainly i do is just first 5-10 mins is open chords and then ill just doodle around on the guitar, sometimes i practice chords i seen on tiktok or youtube but thats really all. How do i genuinely put in the hours and stay focus on things that are important.

QUESTION Teacher recommendations?

Hey guys, I wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions for an online teacher, or if any of you here do online lessons that would fit into what I'm looking for.

I've been playing off and on for about 10 or 11 years, my path to learning has been odd. I started with rocksmith and played that for a couple years, then switched pretty much solely to improvising over backing tracks.

I have some music theory knowledge but like most of my understanding it's fragmented in a way. I can do major/minor scale all over the fretboard, and kinda understand modes but don't have them really memorized, like if I want to do dorian in my head I think just raise the sixth on the minor scale. Don't really have any songs memorized, really have the most fun trying to improvise but would be willing to do whatever I'm assigned if it's going to help me improve. I have pretty bad ADHD so it's hard to hold myself accountable on my own. I'm a fan of fusion guitarists like Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Jack Gardiner, Alex Hutchings, etc.

Have mostly been learning just by playing, but at this point have been stuck in the same place for a while so want to start actually trying to do some structured learning. It's hard for me to find like youtube lessons that fit, they end up either feeling too basic or too advanced.

QUESTION Pinch harmonic not working on middle pickup setting

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I play a pinch harmonic on the middle pickup selection on my new guitar it sounds really bad, but on the other settings it works fine.

Why is that and how do I fix it?

I have a schecter c6 deluxe.

Here is a video as well.

EDIT: Alright so it’s normal for it to be that way and should rather be done with the bridge pickup. Thanks for the feedback guys

NEWBIE I feel like I should be further than I am.

I love guitar, but im not a fan of music like soft melodic switching, its usually too easy. Ive been able to pick up on it very fast. But I have been practicing heavier music and no matter what, my fingers cant move fast enough? I play on acoustic so my fingers often feel weird when im around fret 12 and up. But I have been practicing, and the rhythm is never too bad, but whenever I practice my fingers lag. I just feel like I should be doing it quick, or should be able to play better. I remember I was able to get Barre chords in like 2 months without any buzzing, my girlfriend has been playing awhile and is good with heavier music, and im really good at rhythm guitar and small solo parts but I have been practicing faster solos and I feel like I should be better. Is there anything I can do to improve?

DISCUSSION Kind of a Gear Question:

I love grindcore- Cattle Decap is my jam. I watched a youtube video and found out that they use DAVA picks! Never heard of 'em!, I thought.

TLDR: I ordered some from their website https://www.davapick.com/, turns out they have very quietly gone out of business. Order pending for over a month now. There is a post! [...] similar to DAVA picks?

I found some Jazz Grips and the "clicker" one on eBay, no hassle.

I found a Master Control through a not-so-thorough web search! This is what brings me here before you today, Oh my Brothers! https://proferny.com/ is the spot. Apparently this place is ran by an AI Chihuahua? Please- any locals? Anyone with prior business experience? Um... frankly, it looks like an AI music store to me.

Thanks in advance! I just wanna try one- if you've heard Cattle Decap's music and imagine one of the guys using a metal pick? Kind of bonkers! Just wanted to see what that was like and found myself in the seedy underbelly of... somewhere
