QUESTION Harley Benton HB-35 Plus or Cort Xenox z42 at 100 euro?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I am looking to get one of the guitar mentioned in the title for the price of 100 euro used. I have checked out both of them from up close and they appear to have no noticeable issues (neck, bridge and everything) and they both sound lovely when played without any static.

I would say I barely have experience with the guitar, as I was trying to learn how to play three-four years ago with an Epiphone Les Pauls standard for about a year, but now I really want to pick it up again as I have more time.

If I had to describe my end goal, it would be some type of tame impala vibes and solos in a Slash / Prince vibe. I want to use the one from the two that I will buy till I am able to comfortably play a variety of songs and be able to walk into a guitar shop and differentiate between the guitars I try out.

Fairly experienced guitarist but I feel like I have no idea how to do these chords this quickly. I'm sure I'm missing a voicing that one of you clever folks can work out.

Thanks in advance

QUESTION Guitar Has a Wierd Buzzing Inside of it

Hello, I have a Jackson Js32 warrior, and uesterday, I noticed it has a wierd buzzing everytime I pick a string. The buzzing is located in the upper left spike of the guitar and I have no idea how to get rid of it.

Might sound wierd, but the buzzing is very comparable to a fishing rod being launched.

QUESTION Changing strings on a guitar with only one hand

For a bit of info I have a student who has who has a condition that has left him with no fingers on one hand and a thumb plus three half fingers on his other hand. He is one of my top students when it comes to practicing and super driven. He really likes to do as much maintenance on the guitar as he can and I always like to encourage him to do so with proper research. I’ve been trying to find a method for him to use and I’m hitting a bit of a wall trying to find something that can still end with a nice wrap around the peg. I figured it wouldn’t hurt asking on here to see if anyone has any tips.

QUESTION How to eliminate noise in a guitar

Here is some information about my problem: basically, I have a Squier Stratocaster, but it produces a lot of noise. I’d like to know if there’s a way to drastically reduce or even completely eliminate it without changing the pickups.

I connect the guitar to an Arturia MiniFuse 1 interface with the Hi-Z (guitar) mode engaged and the gain knob set to about halfway; I plug it into the black USB port on the front of my desktop PC case.

The issue is that there is a lot of audible noise even without distortion. A noise gate isn't the solution because it kills my sustain and the cutoff is too abrupt; I want to eliminate the noise while I play, as the background noise makes it impossible to even play clean parts.

I’ve included an audio clip.

GEAR Torpedo Captor Impedeance

I have an amp with 8 and 4 Ohm outputs, the primary cab is a 212 with 4 Ohm. I'd like to try a Torpedo Captor and I am unsure to take the 4 or 8Ohm version.

The manual states:

The speaker cabinet plugged in the ATT output can have a different impedance than the amp.

However, this will lead to changing the attenuation ratio, which may vary from the designed -20dB.

Using a speaker cabinet with a higher impedance (for example a 16 ohms cabinet on a 8 ohms

Captor) will lead to less attenuation (approximately -15dB). Using a speaker cabinet with a lower

impedance (for example a 4 ohms cabinet on a 8 ohms Captor) will lead to more attenuation

(approximately -25dB).

So using the 8Ohm Captor would give about -25dB attenuation, the 4Ohm version -20dB.

Maybe -25 is an actual advantage for home usage, but will the 8Ohm version on the 4Ohm cab alter the sound in a different way than the 4Ohm version?

Did anyone try this Captor/Cab impedance mismatch comparing it to the "intended" setup?

Thanks!

DISCUSSION I don't understand Relic fans

To each their own, we all have personal preferences. But anytime I mention that I like my guitars to look new, to be made of materials that don’t show age like carbon fiber and stainless steel, relic lovers come out in giant groups to shun me.

No one likes rusted cars. If you had a Ferrari, you wouldn’t let any of the parts get bad. You constantly maintain it, and anything that gets worn out gets replaced. Ship of Theseus type of situation.

There’s an appeal to guitars that look new. If you raised a human whose never seen or heard a guitar before, hand them a relic guitar and a new guitar, they’re going to prefer the new one. The only reason people like Relic guitars is because other guitarists tell them it’s cool to like, we are conditioned into it.

Not to mention the whole argument between artificial relics and real ones.

EDIT: Guys I'm not saying I don't understand the appeal of relics. It shows a guitar's history. I am saying I don't understand "relic fans", aka the people that get really aggressive about the subject. We can all like what we like. But if I say "I want a never aging guitar made of carbon fiber and stainless steel that'll look brand new in 100 years"... please don't downvote me for having a different taste.

QUESTION Shipping guitar with neck partially unscrewed

Guitar arrived today, purchased from an online seller with good reviews and a presence on all the usual sale sites (I won't name them because I haven't been able to talk to them directly yet) and the neck was partially unscrewed as if to relieve the tension on the strings. It was loose enough to have a roughly 1/4" gap between the neck and the body. Once I pulled the neck into place and tightened the screws, the strings were fairly tight without much slack.

Is this a common/acceptable practice for reducing string tension in shipping I just don't know about? I have a guitar tech friend I trust who thinks it's nuts it showed up like that.

I can't imagine how it could have occurred accidentally or how it was missed in packing, it was super obvious the neck was loose and the action was way off.

I've only ever had one other guitar with a bolt-on neck shipped to me. That was directly from Fender and the neck was bolted on tight.

TO BE CLEAR, I haven't been able to do anything but send the seller a message, have not as actually talked to them yet, and definitely want to give them a chance to figure out what happened. I'm not going to drag a seller for what could be a mistake. I am asking if anyone has seen this before because I don't want to seem crazy with the seller if it's actually a fairly common practice.

Got some footage back from a show my band and I did a little over a month ago. We had professional video guys film the whole thing. This is currently just a rough cut without the soundboard audio, but I think it's still worth a look.

QUESTION Should I buy this guitar as a bassist in a band?

I am currently a bassist in a band. I own both a guitar and a bass but neither of them are very good. I recently found a used schecter omen 6 for sale for $300 and am considering purchasing it considering my current guitar is way worse than my bass. I informed my guitarist of my idea and he hates that I am considering buying this, he thinks I should ONLY play bass and not even consider buying this guitar. Should I buy this guitar and continue learning both instruments or forget the guitar and just continue on playing bass? Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

DISCUSSION Not Having Enough Motivation

Hello everyone as the title says. It feels like i dont have motivation into playing Guitar. I got my guitar in May (I just turned 17 if that matters) so im still a beginner. Maybe this is just a me thing but i feel like i dont have the motivation. I practice everyday but there would be days where I would practice an hour, hour an half, or there would be days where I only practice 5 mins and instantly get bored. I want to get good at this thing i really do. I wanna be as good as i can be but im not putting in the hours as i need to be. I do have school so that could be holding me back but when im done with homework and stuff i still have alot of free time and it feels like im not progressing and i get distracted to quick.

I dont have practice “routine” mainly i do is just first 5-10 mins is open chords and then ill just doodle around on the guitar, sometimes i practice chords i seen on tiktok or youtube but thats really all. How do i genuinely put in the hours and stay focus on things that are important.

QUESTION Bigsby (Reverend Club King) Question

I’m pondering a Reverend Club King for possible purchase. I think the Club Kings are considered semi- hollow bodies? Anyway, the one I’m considering comes equipped with a Bigsby, which I really don’t need. Question: how much effort/expense is involved in swapping out the Bigsby with a standard stop tail piece? Thanks much.

QUESTION Any tips for better recording audio?

When in recording myself playing it doesn’t have nearly the same feel as it does in person. I tried to move my phone and move my self and a bunch of different variations, but it sounds quieter and thinner on video. Anyone have any ideas or solutions?
