New Rule : Please use the Search function before posting.

As this subreddit has grown over the past years, our regulars have noticed that similar questions get asked over and over again by people interested in the amazing variety of food available in the GTA. Today we're rolling out a new rule to try to reduce the number of repetitive posts that we've been seeing too often.

We're simply asking that posters use the subreddit search to see if their question may already be answered before they post asking for recommendations and reference their research if its not. We also ask that they include specificity like location, cuisine, etc in their request as the GTA is a huge area.

We wanted to announce this change widely so everyone is aware, and hopefully this will be a positive change for the subreddit. We're interested in feedback if you feel the rule has room for improvement.

Brown Donkatsu $13.99 pre tax lunch special in the Annex

Had the chicken katsu box for $13.99 pre tax for a dine in lunch. It was actually the perfect size because their regular menu items are massive. Chicken was a bit thin but other than that a great lunch. What are your best cheap downtown lunches? This is in the Annex Bloor and Spadina. For the price and value I'll be back. Good, prompt service. Nice vibes inside. 12pm to 3pm

$9.99 Jajang Udon with 4 banchan at Seor Ak San

Huge chunks of fatty pork in the jajang sauce. Very home cooked vibe and super substantial portion. Jeon as a banchan is appreciated, as is the slow jazz standards playing.

A contender for best value meal in Toronto for me. Also in the running are:

- most places a banh mi are under $5 (but especially the one with $3.50 takeout meals on Spadina)

- Nepalese buffet on Roncy

- handrolls at Maki Mart

-2 for $5 birria/barbacoa tacos at Venerica Meats

- Village on the Grange

Right by Dufferin subway.

Not sure if the restaurant made a mistake and I was only supposed to get two tacos, but four for under $10 with complementary sides & sauces is an amazing deal!

I ordered from Ubereats since they had a BOGO promo there, but the shop is actually running the promotion off Uber too, so I'm gonna call them and order the BOGO directly next time.

Toronto Star An iconic Toronto peameal sandwich is hiding on one of downtown’s quietest streets

Post image

Despite being an iconic Toronto dish, the peameal bacon sandwich isn’t a ubiquitous menu item in the city.

That’s why Cabano’s owner Kevin Boyd added his version to the menu at the end of September.

Found on a brick-lined road overlooked by most Torontonians, Boyd’s version starts with five-and-a-half ounces of thick-cut peameal bacon seared in beef tallow.

It’s then topped with two tomato slices, American cheese and a choice of regular honey mustard or spicy honey mustard, all tucked into a soft pretzel bun.

Recommendation Request Any Bento Boxes?

I am wondering if Toronto has any good, affordable bento boxes for lunch that are similar to Taiwan train bentos or lunch bentoes in Japan. Ideally either Japanese owned or Taiwanese.

I Ate A Thing La Flota Takerias

I discovered this place via an Instagram ad and while that usually isn't enough to make me go I decided to take a chance. It might be my new favorite Mexican place in the city (slightly edging out Taqueria el pastorcito). The al pastor was especially good, it reminded me alot of my time in Mexico City - they actually use a proper trompo for it which probably makes a big difference. The prices were also great. The only real downside is if you live in the core and don't have a car, it's definitely a bit of a journey to get there.

Anyone know where to get a edamame milkshake/zunda milkshake in Toronto? Or edamame ice cream?

In Japan, supposedly a popular flavour of milkshake is made with edamame, and is also known as a zunda milkshake. Anyone know where to get one of these in Toronto? Or at least edamame ice cream? thanks

Long time lurker making a post to thank all of you foodies in Toronto for your years of recommendations! I finally made the trip and took my partner for a surprise birthday trip to Toronto with her parents this past weekend for a quick two and a half day trip! We damn near spent almost a full day in Kensington Market - there's still so much food left uncovered here that I want to go back and try!

  • Queen Mother Cafe (The Ping Gai was truly everything)
  • Sleepy Pete's (Shocked at how good this damn biscuit was!)
  • Sunny's Chinese - you guys should protect this and the Queen Mother with your lives it was amazing (HK French Toast and the Dan Dan Noodles were a JOURNEY.)
  • Burdock's Brewery - Very delicious beer, couldn't remember half of what we ordered if I'm honest.

We didn't get to hit the Distillery District and a few other places that I see you all recommend (Half House, 7 Numbers, White Lily Diner and 7 West were on the itinerary for the full context!)

Can't wait to come back and hit more good spots!

Mandatory pictures attached, of course.

Best Mandi in The 6ix

Post image

⭐️ Sahib Mandi

📍2104 Hwy 7 #1, Concord, ON L4K 2S9

So i’ve no joke been eating the same dish of chicken and rice almost every single day from this restaurant for over a year and decided to stop gatekeeping this gem.

Mostly because I am a student and cannot be bothered to cook all the time but also because the deals make it very cost efficient.

That being said, I still find it hard to get sick of and keep coming back to it. Juicy, tender and slow grilled meat of choice with flavourful basmati rice this is by far one of the best mandi i’ve had in Toronto.

This place is highly underrated and deserves more recognition. The owner is very warm and welcoming and the food never disappoints. U can feel safe knowing the food is all halal and delicious.

P.S - not a paid ad or anything like that just a student on a budget that’s too lazy to cook and found a good meal deal nearby lmao

Was there any egg nog in the city this past weekend?

I went to two Loblaws and two Shoppers (these establishments are in the walking distance from home and work) and there was no egg nog.

Am I nuts or is egg nog usually available for Canadian Thanksgiving weekend?

I just wanted some nog with my turkey dinner. 😞

Recommendation Request Ruelo experiences (and vs Rahier and Patisserie La Cigogne and Thobor)

I am particularly interested in the mousse/cream based desserts at these bakeries. I have tried all of these pâtisseries except Ruelo. So I'm interested in any comparisons from someone who has tried Ruelo and other such bakeries as listed above and any particular recommendations regarding the cakes at Ruelo.

sushi / sashimi recommend

Hi,

Wife's birthday coming up in a few days, any mid range $$$ recommendation, just normal restaurant or ayce, not omakase. Would be interest to try places with 1-2 pieces of otoro/chutoro. She loves sashimi in general, ikura / flyinng fish roe......

We looked into Wagyu suki / Lobster Burger Bar ayce but seeing some downvotes from other threads so looking for something else.

we went to 168, ichiban, matsuda before so looking for alternatives.
I personally went to aka oni before but only try ramen there, thinking about this for wife

Heated patio for Wednesday lunch in Toronto’s west end

Hey all, looking for a heated patio for lunch today. It has to be outside. Ideally a guaranteed spot, reservations are fine.

Between ossington and Roncesvalles/junction area, or in them.

Any food type, but better than like a wing hut.

I found musoshin, which I may try, but limited seating.

Shawarma platter delivery recs for downtown Toronto

I am having a party and wanted to order a shawarma platter for my guests (10-15 people). I don’t mind splurging and I want to order good amount of food for lunch. I want something good quality, like Scarborough Lebanese shawarma type food. Any recs? bonus points if I can order from them way ahead of time and/ or not have to go through a delivery app.
