Is it true that there are Swedish speaking areas where the locals don't know Finnish?

I heard that there are areas of Pohjanmaa that are very Swedish where the locals don't speak much finnish.

How do they work without knowing Finnish and go to shops, get healthcare etc without Finnish language skills?

Immigration Sharing my experience as a person of color

Hello everyone,
I am not Finnish and I am here to complete my studies and leave. However, during my stay here, it has been few years now, I learned the language to A2-B1 but obviously it’s not fluent.

However I have this feeling especially recently, when I have to interact with customer service in a store, or library, even in the healthcare system ( I live in savo region) I feel like people are kind of rude because I don’t speak Finnish , they show some kind of disappointment or get frustrated because they can’t express themselves in English. I had to interact with this nurse who was quite rude to me yesterday and was speaking to me in an infantilising way, yes i don’t speak Finnish but I am not stupid ?

I hope I don’t sound rude or too critical. I know it is an expectation to speak the language in order to integrate here. But I don’t feel like Finns are so understanding and supportive towards people who are new or just beginning to learn the language.

I feel like I am offending people here just by existing, especially with the rising racism sentiment in Europe.
My country has been colonised in the past, and we have this sentiment that we need to “serve” foreigners who come to our country especially Europeans, we speak to them in their language and we show good hospitality towards them. Yet here, not only that im expected to be fluent , I feel like I’m also supposed to suppress my cultural identity, “act Finnish” .. and I know that I will never be fully integrated because I know many people of color who speak fluent Finnish, have decent jobs like engineering, and still don’t feel included either and that they don’t have Finnish friends.

I still feel this sort of inferiority here, I have been in many situations in Finland in which I really felt like I wasn’t treated with the same amount of respect that a Finn would get, especially in the healthcare system for example.

I did meet a couple of nice Finns tho during my stay in Finland. there are friendly people here for sure, but recently im just encountering this kind of cold and rude behaviour more and more. I just don’t want my existence to be a burden to anyone.

Are Black Friday (or Black Week) deals good? Planning to buy a new phone

I’ve saved up for quite a while and I’m planning to replace my iPhone 12 since it’s slowing down badly to a new 17 pro. Although I want to get it on the cheapest time possible. If I were to buy one, when should I buy one?

Thinking of getting weight loss medicine

• Upvotes

Hi,

I have access to Terveystalo from my employer. I talked to terveystalo about weight loss and their doctor said you are eligible and you can make an appointment and we will start the weight loss program. I asked about the price and he said it starts from around 100 euros per month.

I want to ask others who have been on weight loss drugs. How much is it costing and how much did you need it? Also anything else I should be familiar with? I’m planning to get mounjaro which is more effective? Are injections better or tablets? I hate injections but I should be able to manage.

The US president was quoted as saying
https://www.npr.org/2016/05/17/478409307/president-obama-is-familiar-with-finlands-heavy-metal-scene-are-you
""I do want to point out, that Finland has perhaps the most heavy metal bands in the world, per capita," he said, "and also ranks high on good governance. I don't know if there's any correlation there.""

Serious Kontio Motors

Can't really find any decent reviews or info about the company and product quality but their cruiser scooters seem quite common. Does anyone have any info about them or personal experience? would love to get a scooter from them but I first must know what I'm getting into and what longevity to expect.

Gift from Finland

Hello folks.

I’m going on a business trip and need to buy Finnish presents for partners.

Can you recommend a shop where I can purchase a ready set of something as a gift? Like a collection of dried berries, local treats. Something presentable and worthy.

I visited souvenir shops, nothing found there.

Serious What does this mean in Finnish, to people in Finland?

My partner and I were going through her late father's old photos from an album she recently came into possession of. He was a Namibian diplomat in the 80s (before Namibia was a country) who traveled the world doing diplomacy and whatnot in the name of fighting the South African Apartheid government which them controlled Namibia. We've been able to identify the time and place and purpose of nearly all the other photos he's in, from Uzbekistan to the US to Norway to North Korea, but this one remains a mystery.

What about a blood orange? Sliced? What does it mean? Outspan who? Google is no help here so I appeal to the people of Finland to help us figure out what he was up to in this series of photos (that's not him in the photo, obviously; this is a rare one he took, instead of posed for).
