Dark Cloud is out natively on PS4: Chronicle PS4 v0.1.0
galleryHey everyone!
Thought I'd share something I've been messing around with over the last couple of days.
I've ported Dark Cloud to run natively on a jailbroken PS4, using the Chronicle decompilation project as the foundation.
It's running at 1080p and close to 60 FPS in the areas I've tested, and I've just released the first public version!
Now, I know what some of you are thinking. We can already play Dark Cloud on PS4 through PS2 Classics, so what's the point?
And that's fair! But for me, the interesting part isn't necessarily the end product. It's everything that happens in between.
It's about understanding how these games actually work, pulling apart the different systems, figuring out how they communicate with the hardware, and seeing what we can do with that knowledge.
For this project, that meant building a custom renderer, implementing a PS4 platform backend, working through performance problems, and figuring out how to get everything running together on the console.
And that's what I find exciting about projects like this. Once you've figured out how to make something work, you start wondering what else you can do with it. Could the same renderer or platform code help port another game? Could someone take what we've built and improve it, adapt it, or use it for something completely different?
The point isn't just to get Dark Cloud running on PS4. It's to learn what makes that possible, and then see where we can go from there.
I've also spent some time making the installation process as simple as possible. There's a proper first-run setup screen that handles copying and extracting the game data from your own ISO automatically. Just put the files on a USB, install the PKG, launch it, and let it do its thing.
The whole thing went from an experiment to a public release in about 24 hours, which is pretty wild to me!
Chronicle PS4 v0.1.0 is available now, and I've made the source code public too. It's still an early release, so there may be bugs, but I'd love for people to download it, play around with it, contribute, or even take some of the ideas and build something else.
Huge credit to the Chronicle developers for their original decompilation and PC port. None of this would have been possible without that foundation.

Anyway, thought the Dark Cloud community might get a kick out of this. It's pretty bloody cool seeing what people can make possible with games that are over 20 years old.
Hope you enjoy it!
