Fires of December spoilers (no Cosmere) FIRES OF DECEMBER | Only Fires of December Spoilers Megathread (no Cosmere)

This megathread is for discussion of The Fires of December content without discussion of Cosmere connections, for Fires of December readers who have not read any (or all) of the Cosmere and who wish to avoid discussions that might spoil other Cosmere work.

ANY DISCUSSION OF COSMERE TOPICS, RELATIONS, OR BACKSTORIES MUST BE PLACED BEHIND SPOILER GUARDS, WITH TAGS INDICATING THE BOOK THAT THE SPOILER ARISES FROM:

[Empire Strikes Back] Luke is Vader's Son

On desktop new Reddit, use the spoiler formatting button. On other platforms, to generate a spoiler block like that in the markdown editor, do this:

[Empire Strikes Back] Luke is Vader's son

Any Cosmere spoilers which are not behind spoiler guards, and any Cosmere spoilers which are behind *untagged* spoiler guards, will be removed. This includes things that are merely suggestive or borderline. No teases, no wink winks, no eyes lingering on references you wouldn't notice if this is the first Cosmere book you read.

We strongly encourage all Cosmere-spoiler discussion to take place in the separate, full Cosmere spoilers megathread:

For the The Fires of December post index and non-spoilery discussion, questions, issues, news, etc, see this post:

Mistborn Series + Stormlight Archive Weekly Cosmere Adaptations Thread (Mistborn + Stormlight Spoilers) Spoiler

Welcome to this week's Cosmere Adaptations Thread!

This is a space to discuss all things related to Cosmere movie/television adaptations. Share your fancasts, your dream directors, your ideas for the best script, or anything else related to adaptations. Share all of your hopes and fears!

Please remember Rule 1: Show respect to others. If you can't engage with others in a respectful and welcoming way, please take a step back. Notably, we will not tolerate bigotry and debates about "wokeness".

Also please note that that the spoiler policy for these weekly threads is currently set to include the entirety of Mistborn and Stormlight Archive. If you want to discuss spoilers for other books, please use labels and spoiler tags. (If you're not sure how to tag spoilers, see this post.)

Policy Note: We're making it a new policy to contain general Cosmere adaptation discussion to these weekly megathreads. This change is an effort to limit the high quantity of posts we see on these topics and comes following the announcement that Apple TV is set to adapt the Cosmere (starting with Mistborn and Stormlight) with heavy involvement from Brandon Sanderson. Moderators will be removing posts on these topics and directing them to these threads, with some rare exceptions.

Stormlight Archive spoilers Aren't 3rd ideal radiants OP? Spoiler

We see at the end of WoR that Kaladin can use his shardblade to transform into many different weapons. What's stopping someone from forming their weapon into all kinds of crazy shapes to win a battle?

Imagine just having your blade loop in two directions and then connect to completely immobilize your opponents weapon. Or even turn it into a 20 meter pole, but REALLY thin.

Cosmere spoilers (no WaT and RoW previews) The Origin of Glyphs (Theory) Spoiler

Okay, so I went down a rabbit hole of looking at the Alethi glyphs and how they could relate to the tones. First, my thoughts came from looking at the Shattered Planes and the conversation between Jasnah and Kabsal in WoK. The way that cities took the shape of vibrations on a metal plate. This is further elaborated in RoW when Navani and Raboniel again talk about the tones and specifically the tones of Roshar, referring to the tones of Odium, Honor, and Cultivation. I believe that the Shattered Plains is a giant plate that the tone of Roshar itself is embedded in the stone. In RoW, we see the glyphs of Honor, Cultivation, and Odium in their ancient glyph forms. When they are overlapped, they create the glyph of Roshar. Is it a stretch to say that the radially symmetric shape of the Shattered Plains is the glyph of Roshar, but as its pure tone?

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Shadesmar Sun Spoiler

Is the Shadesmar sun as seen in Roshars cognitive realm the Knell? Or where ambition died? This is literally it.

In other books like emberdark and some of secret history we are not described the shadesmar sun at all. It is not present there and does not play any role in those stories. It is absent.

One of the biggest problems in emberdark is that no one can effectively navigate shadesmar, mostly because of its lack of stable landmarks. The whole solution to the plot is having the navigators come about to solve this issue and give first of the sun leverage.

Dusk really wouldn’t need so much help navigating if the shadesmar sun was visible to him, it could at least establish some cardinal directions to him.

It makes sense then, that the reason that sun is only seen in the region of roshars cognitive realm is because the knell is nearby. This also explains its lack of movement, and weak light. It is not actually a representation of the sun at all, it is just a distant point of light that is close and bright enough to be mistaken for some weak sun.

In this case then, Roshar should be a neighbor of threnody, and the death of ambition.

Not really a theory here, I’m just wondering if this is established? I’ve not seen it mentioned.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Seekers and Hemalurgic Constructs Spoiler

I haven’t been able to find anything definitive so I am asking here. Are Seekers (and other Investiture sensing things like white sand) able to sense Hemalurgic constructs like Koloss and Kandra? The reason I ask is because they are essentially using Investiture through their spikes to change things about themselves such as strength and growth for the Koloss and mind and life for the Kandra. Or at least it feels like the spike(s) for a construct should be an active (kinetic) use of Investiture because they are giving a benefit.

The only thing I can think of for why a Seeker wouldn’t get a reading from them would be something like why most can’t sense Feruchemy as it is an internal manipulation of kinetic Investiture.

So thoughts or a WoB I missed anyone?

Edit: Some people haven’t gotten the RPG books so there is one thing there that kind of triggered this - seekers can sense active metalmind use if they are really good. My thought was that even with a spike stapling new SDNA onto the “victim” of the spike being considered all it does that for a Hemalurgic construct it would have to be active because further/constant changes are happening. Something is giving the energy/calories to the constructs to keep them alive no matter what insane biology it has (like the Chimeras).

Mixed book spoilers Did Adonalsium predict everything almost perfectly? Spoiler

We know that all Shards can somewhat see/predict the future, and that clairvoyance is an ability that even mortals can receive through investiture.

Does this mean that Adonalsium had almost perfect future-sight before his shattering? Did It know what was going to happen, and let it happen anyway? How far do you think he could see into the future?

In my personal opinion, It foresaw all the major events so far, and the next ones too. For some reasons It took a gamble and there's a good chance that Its shattering will lead to the goal It seeks, in a few thousand years of time.

Cosmere spoilers (+previews) Question about Autonomy (and other Shards) modus operandi Spoiler

Post image
33 Upvotes

I'm reading The Lost Metal (the only one cosmere book I have left to be up to date) and came across this paragraph of Moonlight telling Marasi that Bavadin is scared of how scadrians are advancing. But that got me asking, what is stopping Autonomy to give her people the technology and means of doing it? Being a Shard she should know (Sazed said in Alloy of Law to Wax that he expected some advances that hadn't come to pass yet).

At first I thought about her Intent, let people advance independenty (as seen in Isles of the Emberdark). But if not her, what's stopping Retribution or say, Invention doing the same?

Moreover, whats stopping Retribution taking all the parshendi in the Spiritual realm and get out with supersoldiers? (He has Kharbrant in there)

Thanks!

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) What was Nomad missing Spoiler

This is flagged “no FoD spoilers”, but if this question is answered in FoD I’d like to know that it’s answered, but don’t want to know the answer itself.

In TSM, while Nomad is in the lab with the Scadrians, he says his old oaths again and both sets of his old armor Spren try to push into the physical realm. I don’t have the text in front of me, but he makes a comment like “but it wasn’t investiture he was missing”. What…exactly was he missing?

Was he missing Connection to honor bc he renounced his vows? Did something happen to his Identity that makes him unable to use surgebinding normally? If anyone has the time, I’d be interested in an explanation of what, exactly, is required to utilize an invested art.

Thanks!

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Are these two characters...? Spoiler

Spoilers for Emperor's Soul, Stormlight 5, Mistborn era 2 and Isles of the Emberdark

Were Hoid and Moonlight married at some point, between Era 2 and Isles?

Moonlight is one character that we've seen lose her memory (undergo a full Identity flip really) in the Lost Metal.
An interesting snippet on why her specifically, from the Lost Metal:

"Can’t tell these days,” Moonlight said, “if I’m keeping watch on him, or if he’s keeping watch on me. Realistically, we’re both just keeping watch on the same third parties…”
“What. Hoid?” Marasi asked. “He’s been in Wax’s employ for years. He’s an odd fellow, but…”
In the next truck, Hoid glanced at them—past Marasi—and nodded to Moonlight.
Damn. What in the world? How much of her time had she wasted on bank robberies or protection rackets, when this was going on?
Whatever this was.
“Has it ever struck you,” Moonlight said, “how art is so destructive?”
“Art?” Marasi said, frowning. “Destructive?”
“Each new movement consumes the one that came before,” Moonlight said, starting them forward as the traffic began to creep into motion again. “Chops it up and feeds on the corpse. Takes the bones, but drapes new skin on them. Each new piece of art is in some way a parody of what has come before.”
“You sound like an artist yourself.”
“I have certain talents,” she said. “My experiences have given me an interest in the quirks of the artistic world—and its … values, you might say."

This sounds right up Wit's alley. And then we hear in Isles (conversation with Starling) thathis wife "doesn’t remember ever having been my wife". This could potentially be another SoulStamp incident after TLM.
Maybe a tenuous connection but curious to hear what others think.

Tress, Mistborn Era 2, and Rhythm of War Aethers and ideas on their reactions to other metals (spoilers for Tress, as well as minor spoilers for era 2 mistborn metals and Rhythm of War) Spoiler

Just finished Tress, and one thing I noticed while reading was the interaction between activated spores and iron/steel, specifically the two sprouter tools, where the steel trowel pushes spore growth away, and iron plate pulls spore growth towards it. this tracks with how in allomancy iron pulls and steel pushes on metals.

Further, we have seen in Song of War notes that fabrials use spren and their reactions to different metals to create different effects, and I assume the same will hold true for aethers.

So we know what iron and steel do, but what do you all think about the other metals? I have some ideas:

physical metals:

  • iron: pulls growth in its direction
  • steel: pushes growth away from its direction
  • pewter: stimulates denser, slower growth. (ex: verdant vines would be denser, with protective bark)
  • tin: enhanced precision when growing?

mental metals:

  • zinc: growth is faster
  • brass: growth is slower
  • copper: ignores intent from luhel bond?
  • bronze: enhances intent from luhel bond?

Enhancement metals:

  • aluminum: insulates from silver (and id bet other metals and forms of investiture, from what else we have seen aluminum do.
  • duralumin: amplifies effects of silver/other metals
  • chromium: honestly no idea what chromium or nicrosil should do
  • nicrosil: ???

Temporal metals, (gold, electrum, cadmium, and bendalloy), i have no clue either. maybe their effects reflect feruchemy's abilities? feel free to suggest some and I can edit it.

finally, what the hell is going on with silver? From my understanding it seems to be lethal to investiture based organisms, like shades and spores, but as far as i know does nothing to spren. it is not used in metallic arts except as part of electrum. I assumed silver was invested on threnody from ambition prior to its shattering, but that no longer seems to be the case. aluminum has always stood out to me as being out of place in metallic arts, but silver NOT being in metallic arts while having significant effects stands out even more.

just a note that i have not finished Wind and Truth, secret history, fires of december, or yumi and the nightmare painter, try to mark spoilers please.

OATHBRIGER & WARBREAKER SPOILERS Questions & Theories (after Oathbringer) Spoiler

SPOILERS FOR OATHBRINGER
AND
WARBREAKER

❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️

Hi, I finish Oathbringer some days ago and I love it. I can’t stop thinking about personal theories and questions, so i will just spill them out! (If the answer to some of these are just “RAFO”, tell me so i can avoid spoilers, thanks) (If some of these things I named sound weird it’s because I read the books in Spanish lol)

-Was Elhokar going to be a Lightweaver?
I remember that in the first book he mentions seeing things and describing them similar to how Shallan describes pattern when they meet. So I assume its because he was going to be a Lightweaver.

-What big lies does Elhokar hide so much to become a Lightweaver?

-The spren Hoid finds in the end is the pattern Elhokar was supposed to had? It’s in Kholinar

-Does Hoid became a Lightweaver because he actually fits the oaths and lies, of course he has many of them, or because the spren just feel like it? Lol

-How does Nightblood have so much investure when it’s not that hard to create more like him? If i remember correctly, you need to be 9th elevantion an give a 1000 souls to create a weapon like Nightblood, i know that really few people could get into the 9th, but if a god like Susebron just get nuts one day, he could get an army with invested swords. (Fck scary)
I’m missing something? (I know that it’s unknown to them the possibility to awake steel and rock)

-The Radiant in Amarams army:
They mentioned that someone was close to the first oath in the Amaram army, at first I thought it was of course Kaladin, but they said that him becoming a Radiant was not expected. So, who?
That’s when I got exited the most with theories, i think it’s Tien. (Was 😢)
At first i thought it was Kaladin girlfriend, the one that left. Why? Idk, I just feel that my boy needed someone now that he feels alone.
But the more I think, it feels like Tien. I have two theories for this.
First, Syl mentions that she was watching Kal for a long time but she can’t remember this time clearly. Maybe cause when Tien died, she went with Kaladin instead.
Now, the second and the one I like the most, he was going to be a Lightweaver. He used to find those cool silly rocks for Kaladin, and he mentions a lot that the rocks were actually pretty cool, for me, that’s an expression of art appreciation that Tien was showing, or maybe he had some connections to Shadesmar and that’s why he saw things different to the rest. Also, when Tien “confronted” problems, it just seemed like he gets paralyzed and then continues like nothing happens, almost like Shallan did when she was younger. They share so many things.
And now that I mention paralyzed, could he have been a Truthwatcher like Renarin? That’s why he reacted like that sometimes?

That’s all, please no spoilers, just say RAFO if needed.

I really love this book and the questions it gave me, easily my top 2 SLA. (WoK top 1)

Thanks!

Stormlight Archive spoilers Was there an explanation regarding Dai-gonarthis? Spoiler

I remember some very vague conversations hinting at Dai-gonarthis having a very significant cost to use, but was there any clarification as to what that is in any of the books? (I don't read the words of brandon).

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) How is rioting/soothing affected by aluminum? Spoiler

We know that someone can avoid having their emotions pulled or pushed by wearing a lining of aluminum on their heads, such as within hats. However, if a rioter for example were to be wearing such a hat, would that disable their ability to riot the emotions of others? Does this protection work both ways or only one way? We know the rioting can also be disabled if aluminum is pressed onto the chest of a rioter, but does that mean that pressed on their heads wouldn’t disable it?

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) The Cosmere needs a hero shooter Spoiler

I randomly thought of the idea of the cosmere having a hero shooter, similar to marvel Rivals or Overwatch, and I can’t stop thinking about it. There are so many different possibilities that would be so cool to see.

Just some roles I think would translate really well are:

Tanks: Wind runners, koloss / koloss blooded, pewter arms (thugs), lurchers, blood makers, etc…

Dps: Coin Shots, skybreakers, dustbringers, etc…

Support: edgedancers, truthwatchers, Elantrians, etc …

I know there are tons of different abilities I’m forgetting but these were just off the top of my head.

This could also allow for an Interesting Ammunition mechanics, like breathing in Stormlight, and swallowing metal as a way of reloading. Allomancers could also flair their metals allowing for a stronger attack but costing more ammo.

I’d love to hear anyone’s thoughts and recommendations on this idea.

Mistborn Series spoilers Bendalloy twinborn Spoiler

Sure compounding means you can exist without eating anything, whatever

But have we considered a bendalloy twinborn story as the cosmere's premiere competitive eater. Metric tons of hot dogs and chouta disappearing in fractions of a second

The caloric output of nations gone in minutes

The mustard consumption, off the charts
