News - Local Rolleston town centre to expand, with city of 50,000 expected within a decade
Summary:
Selwyn District Council has confirmed the next stage of Rolleston's town centre development, which includes two new blocks of commercial buildings in Rolleston Fields and a town square between the precinct, Te Ara Ātea and Rolleston Reserve. Construction of the buildings is expected to begin in February, with completion planned between August and December 2027, after the project was paused in 2024 due to economic conditions. The council will seek public input on the town square's design and uses next year, and its cost is likely to be considered in the long-term plan. Rolleston is expected to become a city, with a population of more than 50,000, within the next 10 years.
Some of the comments in the article kind of suggest a low-density, campus-like environment rather than a proper dense CBD. Hopefully it will be more like the three-storey commercial and office precinct in Frankton near Queenstown, rather than some of the badly thought-out local post-earthquake urban design.
Plus, it's interesting that the Selwyn Council is finally properly admitting that the population growth rate is currently at a minimum of 16,000 every 10 years.
