Announcement Announcement: Framework Is Tripling Its Support for CachyOS

1.7k Upvotes

Hey CachyOS Community,

We have more great news to share. Framework is increasing its support for CachyOS. The donation goes from $250 per month to $10,200 per year ($850 per month), more then three times the original amount.

When Framework first started sponsoring us, they sent us a Framework Laptop 16 for optimizing our kernel and packages, and committed to a monthly donation. You can read the original announcement here:

https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/framework-sponsorship-for-cachyos/19376

Having Framework triple its support says a lot about how much they care about Linux on their hardware and about the open-source projects their users rely on. For a community-driven project like ours, this kind of steady funding makes a real difference. It helps us:

  • Keep our build servers, mirrors and infrastructure running reliably
  • Spend more time on kernel optimizations, packaging and hardware support
  • Move closer to our long-term goal of working on CachyOS full-time

A big thank you to Framework for believing in CachyOS, and to every one of you who uses, tests, reports bugs, and donates. You keep this project going.

If you’d like to support CachyOS too, take a look at our donation page: https://wiki.cachyos.org/support/donation/

Thanks to Framework, and thanks to all of you for using CachyOS!

CachyOS Troubleshooting First Steps

CachyOS is a rolling release. Updates arrive continuously instead of in one big yearly jump, which is why you get new kernels, drivers and gaming improvements so fast. It also means that occasionally something breaks. Most of the time the cause is boring and the fix is one of the same handful of steps.

This might seem like a lot and could feel daunting. Help is available, but it requires some information.

In order for folks to help you out, you need to supply some information. Here is a step-by-step plan. Work through it in order.

How to ask so that people actually help

When you post, include:

  • The four answers from Step 1
  • The paste.cachyos.org link from Step 3
  • What you've already tried, honestly, including any case of working with AI without understanding what you were asking, or what the AI was saying
  • The Step 7 result if you got that far

Rule zero: stop running commands you don't understand

Many badly broken installs weren't broken by an update. They were broken by three or four half-applied "fixes" from Google, an old forum post, and working with AI without understanding what was being asked or what the AI was saying, stacked on top of each other. Each one silently changed something. By the time help is requested, nobody can tell which change caused which symptom, and the actual problem is buried under the attempted repairs.

So: from the moment something goes wrong, stop applying fixes found somewhere else. Work through the steps below instead.

If a pile of commands has already been pasted into a terminal, that's fine, it happens. Just mention it when asking for help and try to recall what was run. That's far more useful than pretending the system is untouched.

Step 1: Describe the problem properly

Before touching anything, write down four things:

  • What exactly goes wrong? Be specific. "The screen goes black when launching Steam and the power button has to be held" is useful. "Gaming is broken" is not.
  • When did it start? A date or "after last Tuesday's update" is enough.
  • What happened right before it started? Was it an update, a new game, a driver change, a setting toggled, or a fix applied?
  • Does it happen every time, or only sometimes?

That last question is more important than people expect. Something that fails every single time is usually a configuration or driver problem. Something that fails randomly is more often heat, power, memory, or a background process interfering.

Step 2: Terminal survival basics

A terminal is needed for some of this. It's not scary, but may look like it is.

Open one with Ctrl + Alt + T. If that does nothing, open the start menu and search for terminal. When it asks for a password, nothing appears while typing. That's deliberate. Type it and press Enter. Copy text out of the terminal with Ctrl + Shift + C, paste in with Ctrl + Shift + V. The normal Ctrl+C means "stop the running program" here. sudo at the start of a command just means "run this with administrator rights".

Step 3: Generate a log bundle

CachyOS ships a single command that collects everything a helper needs, run from the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh

It gathers hardware details, kernel messages and recent system logs, then asks whether to upload the result. Type Y. A link to paste.cachyos.org comes back. That link is the single most useful thing to include when asking for help. Post it.

For anything the bug report doesn't cover, CachyOS also has a plain "send this to a pastebin" tool. Both of these work (run in the terminal, see Step 2):

  • paste-cachyos ~/some-file.txt
  • journalctl -b -1 -p err | paste-cachyos

The second one shows errors from the previous boot, which is what's wanted after a freeze or a crash that forced a reboot.

Two things:

  • Generate the log bundle before trying Step 6, because rolling back a snapshot also rolls back the logs.
  • The report includes hostname, hardware IDs and full log lines, and the paste is reachable by anyone with the URL. Fine for troubleshooting, but don't paste anything sensitive.

Step 4: Update fully, then actually reboot

Open Shelly, the package manager that ships with current CachyOS, let it check for updates and install them. Older installs may have Octopi instead, which is equally fine. Or do it in the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo pacman -Syu

Then RESTART the computer. No logging out, not closing the lid but an actual restart.

A genuinely large share of "my system is broken" reports are exactly this and nothing more. On a rolling release the kernel currently running and the drivers that were just installed can fall out of step. Everything looks updated, but the running system is still working with yesterday's parts. Typical symptoms: no graphics acceleration, Steam refusing to launch, external monitors not detected, unexplained crashes, etc. A reboot resolves this class of problem. It's a common misconception that Linux never needs a restart — that's not true. The OS cannot process kernel upgrades without a restart.

There's a second reason this step comes early. If some packages were updated and others weren't, the system is probably in what's called a partial upgrade state, and arbitrary unrelated things start failing. -Syu brings everything back in line. This is also why a single package should never be installed with pacman -Sy something. Always update the whole system.

Step 5: When one specific program won't start

If the problem is a single application rather than the whole system, run it from a terminal (see Step 2) to see why it fails. Type its name and press Enter:

steam

or firefox, or whatever it is. Let it fail, then press Ctrl + C. Copy everything the terminal printed and share it, or pipe it to the pastebin tool (see Steps 2 and 3).

For Steam games specifically: right-click the game, Properties, and put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in the launch options. Run the game, let it fail, and a steam-<numbers>.log file will appear in the home folder.

Step 6: Roll the system back to before it broke

This is the feature most new CachyOS users don't realise they have.

If the system is installed on Btrfs, which is the default, CachyOS automatically takes a snapshot before and after every package install, update or removal. So when an update breaks something, there is almost always a restore point from a few minutes beforehand.

If the desktop still starts: open the start menu, search for Btrfs Assistant and open it. Go to the Snapper tab. A list of snapshots with dates will appear. Pick the most recent one from before the problem appeared, click Restore, and reboot. This GUI method works regardless of which bootloader is used.

If the desktop won't start at all: restart and tap Esc (or hold Shift) right after the machine powers on to bring up the boot menu. Look for an entry about snapshots, open it, and pick one dated before the problem. Unlike the GUI method above, this one depends on the bootloader: it works on Limine (which is a bootloader), which has been the installer default since the January 2026 release, and on recent GRUB setups. If systemd-boot was kept from an earlier install, there's no snapshot entry in the menu and a live USB will be needed, so ask for help rather than improvising.

Things worth understanding before doing this:

It only rewinds the system. Documents, photos and game saves live in the home folder and are not touched. That's reassuring, but it also means a rollback will not bring back a deleted file, and won't undo a broken configuration inside the home folder. Don't immediately re-run the update afterwards, or whatever broke it will be reinstalled. Ask first. If there's no Btrfs Assistant and no snapshot entry in the boot menu, the system is probably not on Btrfs and this section doesn't apply.

Step 7: Try the other kernel

If the boot menu lists an LTS kernel entry, boot it and see whether the problem goes away. Recent CachyOS installs ship both a current and an LTS kernel for exactly this reason.

This takes two minutes and reveals a lot. If the problem disappears on LTS, it points to a kernel or driver regression. If it's identical on both, the kernel may not be the culprit and attention moves elsewhere. Either answer narrows things down enormously, so mention the result when asking for help.

Step 8: When updates themselves fail

If the update in Step 4 refuses to run and throws an error, open CachyOS Hello, the welcome window, and look at its Troubleshooting section. It has buttons for the common package system problems: keyring trouble, a stale lock file, a corrupted cache. Try those before running anything found online. These specific failures attract a lot of bad advice that makes things considerably worse.

Desktop I would like to tell you a cautionary tale about my pc getting softlocked

tl;dr: balance your btrfs otherwise your pc will die and you will become sad :(

So I'm chilling with my friends playing some deadlock, and my game crashes. That's cool, whatever, linux be like that occasionally. I reboot the computer, load back in... and it crashes a couple minutes later. I open it again and it crashes literally instantly. Undeterred, I open it *again* and manage to load in and end up carrying the match. Very cool. But why did my deadlock suddenly want to die?

Well, I hadn't updated in a while, so I figured maybe some fresh graphics drivers would do the trick. Check disk space, dolphin says 58 gigs available, sweet. Punch the pacman and... halfway through, my. entire. computer. softlocks.

I'm forced to shut it down (or maybe it shuts itself down) and when I restart it hangs during boot after initializing network services. No sweat I figure, I'll boot a snapshot and use that to restore whatever broke when it crushed during the update.

Thank god for btrfs snapshots I'm thinking as I get to the desktop in the snapshot. And yet here it's saying... can't restore snapshot, no space available. Can't open apps or anything, they just hang or crash. I check dolphin, 58 gigs available. What.

So I whip out claude because this is beyond me. Claude says that my btrfs system is likely unbalanced and has no unallocated space remaining. Sure enough, I check it, and that's exactly the case. Unallocated space: 1 mb.

Except here's the rub: I can't balance it because that requires space and it has no space. Cue me needing to mount my ram as a file system for the computer to use to rebalance the root drive. After doing this, I can finally restore the snapshot and regain access to the pc.

I've cut out a lot of extra steps like losing access to the graphical target in the snapshots after a failed usb mount attempt, blah blah this is long-winded enough as it is. Felt like the art of war after this one, "If fighting is sure to result in victory then you must fight" type shit.

Point is: if your system is anything like mine, then you are likely not balancing your root partition, and it will eventually becomes full despite not being full and cause mysterious problems for you.

EDIT: apparently people want to know how to balance the file system. Here is how you do that. If you want to make it happen regularly, you can make it a service that runs once a month or whatever. Maybe Cachy already has one but in my case it probably wasn't running if it does exist.

  1. Check space allocation with "sudo btrfs filesystem usage /". This will show you how much is free (which is what shows in dolphin) and how much is *unallocated*, which is what you actually care about.
  2. You can rebalance it with the following command. It will likely take a while, depending on how disbalanced your partition is. This command will rebalance data and metadata chunks that are less than 50% full: "sudo btrfs balance start -dusage=50 -musage=50 /"

Help Sound suddenly gone with proton-cachyos-11.0-20261005-sr-x86_64_v3?

I updated recently to the latest updates and earlier tonight my sound was working with games. An update happened and only the "proton-cachyos-11.0-20261005-sr-x86_64_v3" enabled games have no sound. Proton GE does, Proton Experimental does, etc.

Did anyone else's sound suddenly "vanish"?

Question Borrar selector de emojis de Cachyos - kde plasma

Post image
2 Upvotes

Question I somehow broke CachyOS by trying to install a ROM to Heroic?

Sorry, I tried posting this to r/linux4noobs but it's been an hour and they haven't approved the post still. But it's been two days I've been trying to resolve this and I'm desperate.

This is way beyond my knowledge. I've tried everything I could find and nothing seems to work. It may not have been me (I know better than to screw with anything having to do with my boot processes and none of the file permissions I altered should've affected it as far as I know) that did this one related problem I found said his happened when he lost internet connection and my internet was being weird when I was troubleshooting the failed install.

Cachy updated earlier and it half fixed it. I no longer have a long KDEplasma splash screen prior to viewing the GUI but the error still happens. I keep finding people saying "update the kernel" but IDK how to do that and I can't find a straight forward answer to that question for CachyOS. Please, someone help.

I don't really want to re-install Cachy, I literally just installed it two weeks ago and I just barely got everything back to how I had it on Bazzite. Also, I don't have the logs, it won't give them to me even with sudo.

Operating System:

CachyOS Linux

KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.0

Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (15.6 GiB usable)

Hi guys,

I’m trying to put one of those see through chat box that just displays my twitch chat over the game I’m playing since I only have one monitor, so far everything I’ve tried didn’t work.

I made sure my game was running in borderless, and nothing would stick ontop of the game not even the browser custom rules would make it on top of the game. If anyone managed to do please enlighten me, thank you!

Review WhatsApp Client

I have been using CachyOS for 70 days now, and I am really impressed.

I use WhatsApp a lot, but have hated using the web client because a separate window is so much easier to monitor. I have used the dedicated client Whatsie and it has been great, but it really eats through RAM. I had a Whatsie session running at 4GB of RAM, when my Firefox session with 8 tabs only needed 3.5GB. I decided to try something else...

Zapfast does mostly the same as Whatsie but is only using 200mb of RAM. I had to compile it for CachyOS, but the time spent was well worth it. Would recommend.

https://github.com/crmne/zapfast

**Edit**
No spell check! This is probably going to be a deal breaker for me.
Looking at some advice from people below I am trying PWA for Firefox. So far, so good.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/pwas-for-firefox/

But no calling, and needing to use Profiles messed up everything else.

Going back to Zapfast and learning to spell...

Help My friend is getting flickering in KDE Plasma when setting the refresh rate to 240 Hz (everything works properly at 144 Hz though).

(please note that it may take a while until I can change this flair to SOLVED, assuming that the solution is actually found soon, as it will take quite a while for us to actually be able to test out any of the solutions)

My friend has two monitors. The one he is experiencing issues with is an "LG ULTRAGEAR+ OLED UW 3440 x 1440". I found this post which seems to talk about the same (or at least a similar) issue, however it didn't help. He does use a display port which the post said was best, however the "Adaptive sync" option wasn't something we were able to find in the settings.

If it is of any relevance, he has a AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU, and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU. If any more information is required then please tell me and I'll make sure that it's provided as soon as possible. Note though that it unfortunately might take a while until I'm able to actually come back with the details.

Thanks in advance!

Help Left and right audio pitch don't match when playing games

Two weeks ago, I noticed that the audio coming from my headphones isn't the same pitch in either ear. The left side is about a half-step higher than the right side. This is only occurring when I'm playing games. The problem could have been going on for longer and I just missed it, as it's only noticeable when there's in game music playing, plus I've been sick and hadn't been gaming much.

I've tested different headsets, I've tested using the speakers on my monitors, and the issue persists regardless of speaker. I tried tinkering with Pipewire to change some of the values or setting config files, but that didn't solve it. I even tried having the game audio go out to a sound loop, and the pitch still didn't match. I tried launching games with Discord open and completely closed, same difference. I'm at a loss. Has anyone else ever run into this?

Desktop Thanks CachyOS

Post image
129 Upvotes

I'm a VFX Artist and I've been trying to ditch Windows for a long while but always ended up going back to it, either by incompetence or just trying to configure things (like NV drivers) such a pain in the ass. years later now I finally switched thanks to a guy named ronin on youtube (Owen Jenkins) who made a guide for 3D Artists and he also used CachyOS (fortunately, because I heard this linux distro is great at gaming).
Ronin's guide : (https://ronin-on-linux.github.io/3d-artists-guide-to-linux/)
it's been absolutely silk smooth, I'm using Cinnamon desktop for X11 because some softwares are buggy in Wayland (like Houdini). everything is launching way too quick now and the viewport of every software is really fast (unlike Windows).
I'm using Nvidia so I'm thankful for the cashy team for making things like that super easy.
I've been also playing my favorite game (Hunt Showdown) with 0 issues, dare I say it runs faster now, but not at all the games. Arc raiders and some others runs a bit worse but it's still pretty good.
I kept Win10 on a separate drive but I haven't touch it yet since I install linux and I'll probably only will when I want some editing in Davinci.
Have a nice rest of the day all and happy hunting.

Question Updating applications in cachyos

Im building a new pc next month and I'm planning on leaving windows after being on it my whole life, I know linux is a lot of terminal but I was wondering how do you keep applications updated? do they auto update, is there a central place to update everything all at once, or do you have to manually update everything. Also I keep seeing a million different types of proton, what is the differences and if I go with one which isn't built into steam how do I keep it updated (this probably sounds so stupid but I have never used linux before).
