Announcement Announcement: Framework Is Tripling Its Support for CachyOS
Hey CachyOS Community,
We have more great news to share. Framework is increasing its support for CachyOS. The donation goes from $250 per month to $10,200 per year ($850 per month), more then three times the original amount.
When Framework first started sponsoring us, they sent us a Framework Laptop 16 for optimizing our kernel and packages, and committed to a monthly donation. You can read the original announcement here:
https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/framework-sponsorship-for-cachyos/19376
Having Framework triple its support says a lot about how much they care about Linux on their hardware and about the open-source projects their users rely on. For a community-driven project like ours, this kind of steady funding makes a real difference. It helps us:
- Keep our build servers, mirrors and infrastructure running reliably
- Spend more time on kernel optimizations, packaging and hardware support
- Move closer to our long-term goal of working on CachyOS full-time
A big thank you to Framework for believing in CachyOS, and to every one of you who uses, tests, reports bugs, and donates. You keep this project going.
If you’d like to support CachyOS too, take a look at our donation page: https://wiki.cachyos.org/support/donation/
Thanks to Framework, and thanks to all of you for using CachyOS!

This is why I'll be buying a framework laptop when RAM prices return to a sane level. W framework.

2055? There won't be any laptops in 10 yrs time when everything is AGI or humanity is extinct.
7
u/GenChadT 17h ago
AGI? No
Personal computing replaced by a handful of corporate-owned clouds so everything can be rented to you for exorbitant prices for life instead of owned? Yes
3
u/PercussiveKneecap42 14h ago
And that's why I selfhost with FOSS.
2
u/GenChadT 10h ago
Companies know that, that's why they're buying up all the manufacturing capacity for components. They want to make it so these companies stop catering towards the consumer at all. Self hosting is great, I do it myself, but what are we to do when our devices and/or drives die and the only replacements are half a years salary?

Naaa. Until then China will have attacked Taiwan and the majority of chip manufacturers will be out of business. If you're expecting IT prices to go down anytime, I think you'll have a bad time.

u/SpidaSt8 1d ago
Same here. Having a laptop with replaceable parts is awesome! I hate how new ones have everything soldered.

u/InstanceTurbulent719 20h ago
RAM prices will never go back to the post covid crash were Apple could lock these manufacturers in an all-time low price contract for years btw

AI will stop buying at some point. They cannot sustain their costs at this level with no ROI.

I got my framework 13 with no ram or ssd. I found 16gb used on ebay for £100 - from another framework user!. Luckily I had a spare nvme knocking around to complete my system.
I went for the non-pro 13. I'll be upgrading it with parts of the 13 pro as they become available. Very happy camper!!

Ayyyy I don’t even use cachy anymore but I still support em. Keep it up y’all.

u/LegitJesus 1d ago
Whatcha runnin nowadays?

u/WaterWeedDuneHair69 22h ago
Fedora gnome. I wanted something that was not as bleeding edge but also not a dinosaur like Ubuntu. And I wanted better support for apps like vpn clients and stuff like that.
Still got catchy on the side in another ssd though just in case.

Thank you for sharing. I am loving Cachy personally but everyone has their own needs. No judgement!

That's great news, congrats! I absolutely LOVE Cachy, switched from W11 6 months ago and never looked back. Trying to get ppl I know to install too, it's powering all my devices flawlessly and runs all the software I need. Linux can be intimidating at first but as a former distro hopper I can say Cachy has the best community.

Arch Linux user here and the CachyOS Kernel, Repos, cachyos-settings, cachy ananicy-cpp-rules, Noctalia, noctalia-greeter, and umbriel are the gold standard for me. All of those are non negotiable requirements my builds. I proudly donate to the CachyOS and Noctalia team for all their hard work and cannot thank both teams enough for everything they do for us. Seriously guys, THANK YOU!

Right now I am on niri but idk umbriel looks interesting which things have different than niri and is already for full usage for mostly everything?

The moment there's any semblance of a hardware+os focus/standardization, it's game over. Especially for audio, I'm so so so excited for Pipewire to give coreaudio a run.

u/InfameXX 1d ago
Thank you, im going now straight to CACHYOS PATREON
Is that the more straigh forward way to support the cachy team?
3
u/tittymcboob 12h ago
yes, It's not ideal imo but patreon is the way. You'll get a flashy handle on their discord, too.

I saw the Linus tech tips video where they said about 80% of framework users run Linux distros

As soon as ram prices come down, I am buying a framework.

u/SadFoodi 14h ago
If they offered laptops with 17-inch screens, I would be all over it. Anything smaller is gross.

Would be sick if Framework laptops that ship with CachyOS would have some kind of framework design to the OS, maybe a simple framework logo instead of the CachyOS logo for the start menu button in the taskbar?
Not necessarily a framework exclusive icon but something to consider as an optional design for both framework users and non framework users? Kind of like an add on that’s optional for regular cachyos like all the others but comes on by default in new framework specific laptops as they’re shipped out.

I hope Intel supports CachyOS financially so they could optimize for Intel HW https://github.com/intel/intel-performance-skills

It's pretty insane that given the financial turmoil hitting Framework with the increasing RAM prices coinciding with the release of the Framework 13 Pro that they still keep spending resources on initiatives like this. Huge props to them!

My dream laptop is a Framework 16 running CachyOS, and I will have it one day. This is great news!

u/gambit700 19h ago
Excellent news. I wish they had a Framework 15 or that the desktop was more affordable so I could get one.

I am paying you guys a coffee every month for the great work you do.
I think anybody who uses the distro can do this, depending on how much a coffee costs in the country you live.

As someone who bought a framework recently and put cachy on it. This is great news!

u/ImplementFair535 2h ago
let's be realistic, it doesn't really stop these Asshats from cheating and ruining it for everyone else anyway. I quit playing multi-player games years ago because it's pointless to even try.

Happy to hear it. Was a fan, but quickly switched back to classic Arch.
Why? I heavily dislike the Mirror Situation of CachyOS. And their choice of primary mirror rating tool is absolutely awful. Restricting my traffic to specific countries is a must have! No discussion needed. Especially with russian and chinese mirrors in the list per default. I have nothing against the individuals, but the infrastructure between me and them and who controls that.
And if I want to host a mirror, give me the tooling like standard arch does. Yes, the syncthing is a nice additional protocol, but it keeps it restricted to “invite only”. And absolutely fuck that to the moon and back. Awful choice.

Too bad framework is overpriced and mid asf otherwise I’d buy one. Great PR for them for 10k
4
u/get_homebrewed 1d ago
they're perfectly fine? Expensive sure but you're insane to think it's a scam or anything
0
u/Flashy_Pollution_996 1d ago
I’m not saying it’s a scam but just overpriced asf the main board costs as much as a laptop I don’t really see the point of the whole thing you can change your ports and the display great but you can’t change the processor unless you spend as much as a new laptop
2
u/get_homebrewed 1d ago
it's a bit cheaper than a laptop
1
u/Itz_Raj69_ 23h ago
Not at all. You can get a Legion with a Ultra 9 and 5070 for 1.5k, the
same pricealmost the same price as framework's 5070ti board1
u/get_homebrewed 23h ago
their 5070 module is 700?
0
u/Itz_Raj69_ 23h ago
1.2k for the 12gb version.
1
u/get_homebrewed 23h ago
that's the 5070ti...?
edit: nvm. is the legion even 12gb
1
u/Itz_Raj69_ 23h ago
Yeah my comment mentions 5070ti not 5070
1
u/get_homebrewed 23h ago
to start off, I can't find the legion at that price. secondly, not sure it's the 12gb version either?

Keep buying cheap low-grade products then. Framework isn't for you. I'd rather spend my time working and not waiting for an RMA than never comes.
1
u/chuiu 4h ago
For the price of a framework you can definitely get a much nicer laptop from a competitor. The whole reason why frameworks are expensive is because they can be upgraded over time and any part can be replaced easily. Framework laptops aren't a 'premium' product, they're just a more sustainable, upgradeable, and customizable option.

KDE 6.8, Fortnite coming to Linux, Framework tripling its support.
Today is definitely a good day for Linux!
