Discussion Iron and resin worth it?

Are these jackets worth the cost or are there other less expensive alternatives? Do they go on sale?

Loving the Scout jacket. The flannel lined waxed canvas with the corduroy accents is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for but they come with a hefty price tag. Haven't been able to find any used online in my size so far so just looking at options before I commit. Thanks.

Review PSA: Samsonite's "10 year warranty" is garbage, buy something better

I know that Samsonite probably doesn't count as BIFL anymore, but just wanted to document that for anyone who's considering a purchase.

I bought a 21" spinner that was used for about 5 trips; one of the back wheel "tires" cleanly split apart and partly fell off, clearly due to a manufacturing defect rather than anything close to normal wear & tear. Submitted a warranty claim; received an RMA to either ship (at own expense) or bring the luggage to a repair center.

After bringing this all the way to the repair center, the repair guy didn't even look at my documentation, said that Samsonite doesn't fix wheels because it's part of wear and tear, and charged me $35 + tax to replace the wheel. I reluctantly paid because the luggage was like new and I wanted it to live out its useful life rather than become junk in a landfill.

To add insult to injury, when I emailed Samsonite about this they said that the repair center "carefully inspected the luggage and determined that the damage is not covered under the terms of the warranty" — a canned response because the repair center didn't even look at the RMA and has no idea who I am.

I can't imagine how frustrating this would be if there wasn't a repair center within a short driving distance and I actually shipped the suitcase to them. It would have cost as much as buying a new one.

Don't buy a Samsonite if you're expecting it to actually last.

Discussion Percale vs Bamboo sheets if you actually wash them for years?

I like the crisp feel of percale, but bamboo sounds better for warm nights. I have been comparing a bedsure bamboo set with basic cotton percale and keep finding reviews that focus only on the first week. How do these materials compare after a year of washing?

Vintage Bluetooth Speaker lasted 13 years

I bought a Bluetooth speaker in 2013 from Woot (had to look up my purchase history) and used it mainly in the bathroom to listen to streaming and podcasts while getting ready in the morning. It slipped and cracked open on the tile. I held a brief memorial for it and thanked the battery for its incredibly long service. I doubt I will find anything that will last this long now.

Discussion Non-stick Free Air Fryers

My air fryer is about to die and I want to avoid getting one with a non-stick coating since no matter how good you take care of it it always ends up peeling of at which point you have to replace the whole thing and no matter how expensive the thing is it most are about the same. I just want one to do its thing, be easy to clean and not poison me when the coating starts coming off.

The main options I came across when looking at old posts in this sub were the Ninja Crispi and Granitestone 16Qt which is the new name they have for the Big Boss Oilless Fryer, are there any other offerings I like the simplicity of the Granitestone and it's quite spacious, more affordable and I just found out that the Crispi despite having a glass container still comes with a non-stick tray which kind of defeats the purpose of having the glass container at least in my book, are there any other options or should I just go with the Granitestone ?

[Request] Looking for recommendations on a vacuum cleaner for home use.

Info is mostly in the title. We've had a Shark stick vacuum for 2 years now, and it's just not doing the job anymore. My wife thinks a Dyson would be better, but I want to make sure that we are actually buying a quality product, and not just paying for a fancy name.

Thanks in advance.

[Request] Best towel warmer recommendations?

Does anyone here have a towel warmer they love? I need some advice on buying one so I can have nice warm towels during cold winters, and in the summer I'll have a crisp dry towel instead of a soggy one. Budget isn't an issue so please feel free to recommend any options that you've been happy with. Thank you for any recommendations.

Discussion Breville toaster oven colorful models

Anyone has experience with colorful models of Breville toaster oven?
I’ve been happy with the stainless steel model for several years and the oven exterior still looks new but the Almond Nougat looks really nice so I wonder if it will last. I wonder if the color would change over time from heat? And is the exterior easy to clean? I assume I can’t use anything abrasive on the exterior of the oven.

Discussion duvet cover that still feels cotton-soft after washing?

Several duvet covers I have owned felt soft at first and rough after repeated washing. I am considering a Bedsure cover, but I want to understand which weave stays comfortable longest. Is percale, sateen, or washed cotton the safest choice?

[Request] Looking for waterproof winter walking boots - recommendations?

Reading Reddit comments, experiences with these brands seems mixed:

Xtratuf

LL Bean

No:

Hunter

Columbia

Not sure:

Merrell

Sperry's

Any suggestions? Looking for something I can comfortably walk around my neighborhood in for about an hour or so, in winter temperatures 30-40F, when it's RAINING.

Thank you!!

[Request] Best Stretch Hiking Shorts?

• Upvotes

I’m looking for 4-way stretch shorts that hold up (especially the zipper!). I don’t need a million pockets; actually, low-profile/flat pockets are a plus. Prefer a 9” inseam, but 10” works as well.

I’ve looked at Kuhl and Bonobos but am unsure about each.

Price range is $100 or less, but would go over if they’re truly buy it for life.

Thank you!

[Request] Looking for handbag recommendations for my mum (£50 budget)

Hi everyone,

I'm travelling back home soon and want to buy a handbag for my mum as a gift. My budget is around £50, and I'm looking for something that looks classy, is good quality, and will last her a decent amount of time.

I'd appreciate recommendations for brands or shops where I can find a good handbag within this budget.

I'm not necessarily looking for a designer brand, just something that looks elegant and feels like a thoughtful gift.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion What's your favorite humidifier?

I live in Canada, and I'm looking to buy a humidifier, but after reading so many different reviews online, it's hard to tell what's actually true.

Some people say humidifiers work really well, while others say they have different problems. I've also seen people mention that humidifiers can grow bacteria and develop a slimy buildup, and some people say you can only use distilled water.

After looking into it for a while, I still don't know which one is the best choice.

Also, Is there a big difference between warm mist humidifiers and cool mist humidifiers?

The things I care about most are:

- Easy to clean and maintain

- Whether it actually helps improve the air

- Whether I need to keep buying distilled water long term

I'd really like to hear what humidifier you're using and your honest experience. I don't want to waste money on the wrong one.

[Request] Arcteryx Thorium Hoody or Aritzia Super Puff for everyday winter use as a dude?

(Disclaimer: I included the “as a dude” part because some of my girl friends said that aritzia is supposed to be for women and that seeing a dude wearing a super puff would ick them)

I know no jacket does it all but If I had to pick one for everyday use (walking to and from classes, standing outside waiting for the bus, walking my dog, etc), which one of these two should I pick? Any additional recommendations are definitely welcome.

Ideally I’d wear it from mid October till the end of the winter. Average winter temps are between 0C and -15C here where Im locating In Canada with some days reaching -25C/-30C.

Id also love some gloves reccs if you guys have any

Thanks In advance :)

Discussion Automatic wet food feeder that works long term?

I'm looking to replace my current feeder (Grookpet, do NOT recommend). It lasted a few months before starting to act up and now it's virtually unusable.

My ideal feeder would have:

- A stainless steel tray (not plastic)
- Reliable operation over the long term
- Ideally, a decent warranty and customer service
- I like the idea of being able to control via wifi/app but not a dealbreaker

I’m open to spending a bit more for something that will actually last. I’ve heard good things about PETLIBRO, but I’ve also seen mixed reviews about quality over time.

What feeder do you own, how long have you had it, and has it actually been reliable? Bonus points if you’re in Canada and can speak to the warranty or customer service experience!

Discussion What made you realize gym equipment is one of those things where buying once can actually make sense?

• Upvotes

Gym equipment is interesting from a Buy It For Life perspective because some pieces can potentially stay with you for years.

But durability isn't just about whether something physically survives.

A piece of equipment can last forever and still become useless if it's uncomfortable, difficult to adjust, or doesn't fit how you train.

For those building a home gym, what made you decide that paying more for one piece was actually better than replacing cheaper versions repeatedly?

What equipment has genuinely held up for you?

[Request] Sturdy super soft sole shoes in kids size?

Hi all! I’m looking for shoes for my sister who has CP. Walking for her is difficult and painful and she needs shoes that are both super duper soft on the sole, have support for ankles and can be found in EU size 33. Can anyone help with this? I’d be super greatful for any and all help! So looking for shoes that

- are extremely soft on the inside
- have ankle support
- can be found in size EU33/US1-2/UK1
- not be super childish (she is in her thirties)

Thank you so much!

[Request] After 3 years of use, it is time for me to get a replacement for this Flydigi Vader 3 Pro. Any recommendations for pc controllers?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was able to buy this controller at a very good price 3 years ago, it cost me about 45 USD. As expected, no drift. For me, the left button got mushy and the dpad started to not respond so well, and the battery (and I assume its sensors) are very worn down, this is my fault because I used a 20w charger to power up my controller (shall never do this mistake in the future)

Discussion What’s something you bought years ago that’s still better than the newer version?

Have you ever replaced something you owned for years, only to realize the newer version wasn't nearly as good?

I'm talking about everyday stuff like kitchen appliances, shoes, furniture, or even basic household items.

Sometimes I wonder if older products were actually built better or if we just got lucky with the ones that lasted.

What's one thing you own that you'd rather repair than replace with the newer version?
