META Building a Better r/bettafish: Culture, New Mods, and a Look Ahead

Hey everyone, Roboto, your friendly neighborhood (actually human) mod here with some subreddit updates!

First, the least fun part in all of this –

We need to talk about our subreddit culture.

Our community is toxic. There’s no other way I can think of to describe what has been happening. Even worse, this reputation extends beyond our immediate community into other subreddits and even other platforms. People are afraid of us.

I’m going to take some ownership of this. The harsh reputation of this subreddit far precedes me as a mod, but in recent years, our hard-fought progress on this front has been lost. That’s on me. The lack of consistent moderation here has let rules 1 and 2 go under-enforced for too long, allowing hostility to take root as the norm.

The adversarial and unwelcoming environment we’ve collectively created functions in direct opposition to our subreddit goals, and frankly what I believe to be the goals of many users here. If we care about betta fish first and foremost, this culture needs to change.

Our expectations and what better looks like

If you have good advice to give, give it in a more constructive, not destructive, way. Shaming people makes them shut down and disengage so they don't even process the rest of the good advice you have to offer. Don't highlight all the things they're doing wrong, focus on what they can do better and why it's helpful in a way that encourages them to do it.

So instead of saying "your empty tank is sad," share the opportunities for improvement, like "betta fish benefit from tanks with lots of plants and hiding/resting places so your fish would be happier if you filled the tank in a bit more."

We can’t ignore that people will think they're doing research by going and talking to presumed experts or reading product information. Store employees are presumed to be properly trained and products marketed at bettas are assumed to know what they’re talking about, too. It doesn't help that there's very little consensus online about what adequate care even is. For example, Petco's online betta care guide, updated in 2025, says bettas need a minimum of 1gal. Furthermore, many quality care guides are on niche websites that may not seem credible to a new hobbyist compared to a well-known chain.

With that in mind, we all need to stop:

  • Telling people they should have done more research
  • Immediately calling people abusers for making mistakes
  • Shaming the pineapple (or any other novelty decor/bowl)
  • Attacking aesthetic choices instead of addressing actual care needs
  • Debating what it means to rescue a betta on posts where ethical sourcing of fish isn’t the main topic

Going forward, comments exhibiting the behaviors listed above will be removed as violations of rules 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exact nature of the comment.

I know members of our subreddit are burned out from the bad husbandry they see constantly. It's exhausting and I won't pretend it's not. But if we bully one owner into submission, cool, that's maybe one fish saved. How many owners did we scare away from asking for help in the process? We're going to have a far broader impact building people up in this hobby, not tearing them down.

That said, this is a two-way street of support. I'm cognizant of the fact that people offer their time and mental energy supporting our subreddit, and they don't deserve to have that wasted by people who don't care to use it. If someone is given better information and advice and refuses to take it, that violates rule 3. We often get reports about all the fighting around ignored advice, but not the ignoring itself. In the future, please report these instances to us. For this to be successful, we also need users to avoid escalating disagreements when OP refuses valid and respectful advice.

Now for the fun stuff –

New mods

We recently brought on 12 additional mods to enable us to better support this community’s needs. Please help us welcome:

They’re going to introduce themselves in the comments below and I’ll try and link their names in this post as they do.

It takes a bit to get 12 brand new people to operate as a consistent group, so we may occasionally over-moderate while everyone learns.

I realize that our increased emphasis on subreddit culture may make removals feel arbitrary at times. In the spirit of transparency, I have given the new moderators the guidance that if a senior mod isn’t free to give timely feedback, when in doubt, they should remove posts/comments that are believed to violate rules. Senior mods will still review the content in question, and removals may be reversed, if necessary.

If you disagree with a moderator’s decision, please send us a modmail and one of the senior mods will review your concern and get back to you.

Updated tools and resources

Small updates at this time, but more exciting things in the pipeline!

  • We’ve begun a major revision of the subreddit wiki. Some of our work in progress pages are already live, with more to come.
  • Select pages are also now linked in the subreddit sidebar to streamline access to key information for new betta fish keepers.
  • In the next few weeks, we will be rolling out additional tools that should make it easier to share information that we often find ourselves repeating. Our hope is that this will help address some of the burnout we see many of you all experiencing.

Roboto is a super sentimental actual human

I realize this post started on a challenging topic, but despite the highs and lows our community faces, I remain grateful that I get to do this with you all.

I’ve been a mod of this community for nearly 7 years, and a member for far longer. In that time, so many things, from our mod team, to Reddit as a platform, to our own lives and the world around us, have become fundamentally different.

There are very few constants I can point to after all this time, but the enduring engagement and passion of this community is one of them and I’m honored to steward this space.

At the core of it all, this hobby, and this subreddit, are comprised of people who really want the best for one another and that makes this work so much easier.

Thank you all, sincerely, for riding with us as we figure this thing out. I’m excited for the next chapter of our subreddit, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the next 7 years.

- Roboto

Edit: If anyone has additional feedback about our community culture, please share it in a comment below, or feel free to send us a modmail.

Welcome to r/bettafish!

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas.

⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Tank Size
  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

I work at Petco, and thankfully I found a different job because one of my managers SUCKS, but I saw this female betta doing this, if I don’t HAVE to clove oil her, I’d rather not, I close today so I only have 2 hours before I leave but can anyone tell me if she’s saveable, I have multiple tanks at home, I have my 2.5 gal shrimp nursery that I could temporarily house her in, I have a 10 gallon with only shrimp I can permanently house her in if she recovers

Edit: one of her eyes looks like it’s prolapsed?? Idk how else to describe it, I’ll put an image in the comments, when she’s not swimming she’s vertical, head down

Discussion am i a bad person for asking for a gift i gave?

Post image

yes the title might seem confusing. in the image im sharing was the previous tank my friend had two bettas in. Yes. two bettas. so since i got one and already knew a lil bit about the world i decided to give a 20 L tank to her with lights, filter and even decoration.

(IMPORTANT: i expected her to get a job to give her bettas a better tank, so i could claim the tank once again and use it for like a hospital tank, but she doesn’t want to get a job).

it has been two months since i gave her the tank and now someone came to her house saying that the filter and the lights were consuming way too much in the light bills. so for that reason she decided to stop using the filter, and she is also thinking of giving away her bettas. so since she told me that i decided to tell her that if she doesnt want to really take her of her bettas i would like to get my things back so i could give use the tank as a hospital one since my betta is sick rn. and now she is mad.

did i do the right thing?.

My Bettas Odin and Marina recently spawned and I’ve got free-swimming fry in my grow-out tank. This is my first successful spawn, so I want to make sure I get their nutrition and feeding routine right from week one through adulthood.

They are just one day old

Help out what to feed them

I asked if I could take her home for free because she was floating in cup and had almost no colour, they agreed. She seemed to have fight in her and she did her best to swim when the cup was moved. She seemed to have spinal trouble and swim bladder issues. 12 hrs later she has surprised me!

My sweet boy Namor passed today while I was at work. I wish I had been better for him. He was in a hospital tank with an antibiotic treatment and I worry he must have been so confused and frightened, being in a strange tank with medicine water. I’ll meet you again next life and til then, I’ll miss you so much

Discussion Aside from the tail nipping, does he look healthy?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

This is Yoru! I suspect he's been nipping his tail at night. He acts completely normal during the day. Then when I turn on the lights in the morning, his tail kept missing chunks! I thought his tail might have been getting caught on sth. But after rearranging the tank multiple times, his tail was still ripping. So I thought fin nipping? I've bought some more plants for coverage, covered the back and sides of the tank to reduce his reflection, and started covering his tank with a towel at night and I think it's reduced the biting! Haven't seen any more wounds and I'm keeping the water clean for him. I'm still a bit worried he might be stressed, so I want some input whether or not he looks healthy?

Tank parameters is always 0 ammonia/0 nitrites/ 10-20 nitrates. Only tankmates are bladder snails. He stares at them like they own him rent lmao.

I’m crying… my betta gave me a hug for the first time!! Im seriously filled with a lot of emotion over this lol.

Whenever I used to stick my finger in the tank, he’d swim away or ignore me and I thought he wasn’t the kind of betta to be affectionate.

I recently went on a trip and my friend was watching him for a few days. When I got back earlier this week, I’d never seen him so excited to see me! Now he’s hugging me :’) I guess he does love me after all <33

Poor Cosmo passed last night suddenly. I got him a year ago in a very bad state he had dropsy and a burn from laying on the heater and even when he came back from the brink he had no color. I gave him a planted tank and shrimp and snail friends and his shimmers came back and he was happy until this morning he was just gone. First picture is recent the second picture is his healing in the tanin tank. I didn't post a picture of him sick because it was very graphic but I was so proud of him for overcoming so much. I'm not sure if I will get another betta or not. They are very sensitive and a lot of work but I always feel so bad seeing them in their tiny cups.

Im so sad. I have two more tanks with a female and a male betta. The other male is over a year too. This hurts so much.

OK, I don’t know if I’m going crazy or not but I got the Betta fish. I think two years ago from a $.99 store as you can see he has like a little bit of scoliosis, but he’s always had that and it’s never affected him but for like a past 2 weeks or so I noticed that he hasn’t been really active as much and then I was looking at him and it kind of looks like he’s pineconing I just wanted a second opinion

First two pics are after just 24hrs in the tank, last pic is what he looked like while acclimating. It's amazing what some clean water can do for a dull betta!!

I was made aware he will likely go blind from diamond eye and don't worry, I've started the process of training him with a ring where to find food. I also have large gaps between decor and hides so there should be no risk of him losing his way and getting stuck. If I have my way he will get the best life I can give him even if he goes blind.

My boyfriend suggested the name Zatoichi which is very fitting so that's what I've named him. ❤️

Help Does my betta girl need a new friend?

• Upvotes

Before I say anything, yes I am aware bettas are best by themselves and all that, but I’m asking if this is an exception.

My betta girl, Koi, grew up with a sorority at the fish store I got her at, and I decided to keep her with a group of them
They all got along great, no flairing, chasing, nipping, the tank was large enough for them to both mingle and have their own territories

However, I did not realise at the time of purchasing, but this fish shop isn’t exactly the most ethical in their fish sourcing, and every single betta in that sorority developed dropsy except for Koi within 2-3 months
I’ve checked everything I could on my end, and I’m almost certain it is not due to the water as I also have some bottom feeders in that tank we bought from another fish place who are still alive, and every other fish we got from this specific place has died within a month or two compared to other places where they’re still thriving after all this time

Basically, after the last of Koi’s sorority died, she’s been off
Not as excited as she use to be, just kind of eats then just lays on a leaf or the ground, does get a little excited when someone goes up to her tank, but not as much as she use to
No bloating, no pineconing, and none of the symptoms the others had had, so I’m fairly certain she’s not ill, and my water parameters are all fine (no ammonia, no nitrite, a little nitrate, water at 25°C, lots of live plants, a bubbler going 24/7)

I’m just wondering if she’s sad and lonely

If she is, what is the best course of action?
As I’m well aware that having another betta (or a few) that she did not grow up with is a recipe for disaster, but my mum keeps suggesting we should to at least try
I thought before doing anything, it’s best to ask this group
