discussion Nine days marooned in Bangkok floods, and I have never fallen faster for a destination (22nd September-2nd October)
I recently returned from a nine night stay in Bangkok, and while the seasonal rains and subsequent flooding meant I was unable to venture beyond the capital, I felt compelled to share an appreciation post for what is easily one of the most remarkable countries I have ever visited.
Having lived, studied, and travelled extensively across the Gulf, the UK, and Europe, I have experienced my fair share of global cities. Yet Thailand occupies an entirely distinct tier. Being based in Thong Lo during the deluge could have felt restrictive, but it instead afforded me the rare luxury of discovering Bangkok at an immersive, unhurried pace. From hidden culinary gems to the quieter neighbourhood nuances, I explored the city to its absolute fullest.
Beyond the geography and the urban energy, what genuinely elevates Thailand is its people. The warmth, grace, and innate kindness of everyone I encountered was nothing short of phenomenal. During my stay, I also had the pleasure of connecting with several long term expats who now proudly call Bangkok home, and their insights added a wonderful depth to the experience.
Even now, having returned to my usual routine, I find myself constantly thinking about the place. It is rare for a destination to resonate so profoundly, and I am already looking forward to my eventual return.
Cheers!
