I shouldn't have to make this announcement, but stop taking (and losing) your ball pythons in the car

1.1k Upvotes

After seeing a new "Help, I lost my ball python in the car" post pretty much every day for the past month when I log on, I think it's time for a little reminder

STOP TAKING YOUR BALL PYTHONS IN THE CAR UNNECESSARILY.

They don't want to go get coffee. They don't want to go get pizza. Or go to work with you. Or drop the kids off at school. Or go look at the other ball pythons at petsmart. These are not enjoyable or beneficial experiences for them, and each and every time you do this, you're causing an unnecessary risk.

Cars are full of dark, hard to reach and cozy crevices for them to slip into, places they would much rather be hiding in then sitting on your lap or in a bin. It only takes seconds for them to slip out of sight and out of reach, and being able to find them is not a given. Certainly nobody plans on losing their snake in the car, but the amount of times it somehow keeps happening should demonstrate why it's a terrible idea.

Part of being a good pet owner is being aware of the species you have and their habits and preferences so as not to put them in risky situations for your own enjoyment. A dog may enjoy going for a quick ride, not so much for a ball python who would rather be in their warm and cozy hide.

In the event you need to take your snake somewhere (such as moving or the vet), put it in a tied pillowcase in a locking bin (two layers of containment).

PART TWO: r/BALLPYTHON RULES AND GUIDELINES

posting and commenting rules:

  • MOST IMPORTANTLY: DON'T BE A JERK! we will not tolerate bigotry, threats, personal attacks, and general harassment. this includes harassment via private messages. the moderators will use their own discretion to issue warnings, remove posts/comments, and/or ban users temporarily or permanently. click here to read more about this rule.
  • STAY ON TOPIC, BALL PYTHONS ONLY! this is not the place to post about your other reptiles. we will allow some seemingly off-topic discussions if they are geared toward getting to know your fellow ball python owners; for example, "what other pets do you have in addition to ball pythons?"
  • HARMFUL ADVICE AND MISINFORMATION - meaning there would be a negative impact on the snake's health, safety, and/or overall comfort as a direct result of following the advice/misinformation - will be removed at the discretion of the moderators.
  • NO LIVE FEEDING PHOTOS/VIDEOS!
  • USE THE NSFW TAG for photos or videos clearly showing dead prey (including feeding posts), a dead snake, injuries such as open wounds, etc. click here to read more about this rule. moderators may give reminders, give warnings, or remove posts for not having a NSFW tag.
  • THIS COMMUNITY IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR VETERINARY ATTENTION! while we can guide you through husbandry changes and home remedies for basic health problems such as stuck shed, mild scale rot, minor wounds, etc, we do NOT condone skipping the vet and treating serious problems at home. furthermore, a lot of bad advice gets thrown around in these discussions that can make the problem worse. moderators will lock and/or remove posts if the only sound advice anyone can offer is "go to the vet."
  • MORPH IDENTIFICATION REQUESTS must be posted in r/BallPythonMorph to avoid r/ballpython being flooded with this common question.
  • "NAME MY BP" REQUESTS must go to our "name my BP" thread. click here to read more about this rule.
  • SELF-PROMOTION is restricted to the self-promotion thread. any other self-promotion of social media pages, businesses, other subreddits, sale ads, etc, will be removed. multiple offenses will be marked as spam and result in a permanent ban. BREEDERS click here to read more about this rule.
  • REHOMING POSTS are allowed. please include as much information as possible, including your general location, basic information about the snake(s), whether or not the enclosure or other supplies would be included, whether or not you are willing to ship, and any rehoming fees. rehoming fees must be reasonable, max $50 for the snake and max $100 for the snake + enclosure. this community has a long history of successful rehomings, but we advise anyone interested to proceed at your own risk and be aware of potential scams.
  • DIRECT LINKS TO SALE/ADOPTION ADS OUTSIDE OF REDDIT are NOT allowed. if you are a breeder selling snakes, that belongs in the weekly self-promotion threads. if you want feedback on a sale/adoption/rehoming ad you found on a website like craigslist, kijiji, facebook, etc, showing a potentially neglected or abused ball python, please post a screen shot of the ad with identifying information such as names, locations, phone numbers, etc, censored in some way; this prevents the person who posted the ad from being harassed by an angry internet mob.
  • OFF-REDDIT LINKS/ARTICLES/VIDEOS must be posted with a written summary or other discussion prompt. for example, links to content such as articles or videos must be paired with a written summary to allow users to participate in the discussion without clicking the link. posting a link as part of an advice request ("is this product worth buying?", "is the info in this care sheet accurate?", "is this a reputable breeder?", etc) is acceptable.
  • OTHER PETS INTERACTING WITH BPS, such as cats, dogs, etc, is not something we condone. photos/videos showing other pets being in close proximity to or directly interacting with a ball python, outside of the enclosure, will be removed. click here to read more about this rule.

general posting guidelines:

  • HAVE A QUESTION? YOUR ANSWER MIGHT BE IN THE FIRST PART OF THIS POST! please be sure to read through our care guides, product recommendations, tutorials, megathreads/FAQs, and other links.
  • WHEN ASKING FOR ADVICE, BE THOROUGH. if our resources didn't have the information you're looking for, let's brainstorm! ball python care can be a complex puzzle, and it might not be obvious which pieces of the puzzle are causing problems with other pieces. the more details you provide, the easier it will be for other people to offer the most relevant advice. click here to view our questionnaires for enclosure critiques and feeding advice. please copy/paste the relevant questionnaire(s) into your post text and fill out the answers with as much detail as possible.
  • ENCLOSURE CRITIQUES are something we love to do, but we need a lot of details to help us give better feedback! filling out our enclosure critique questionnaire in addition to posting photos of the full enclosure will ensure you get the most useful advice.

general commenting guidelines:

  • WHEN GIVING ADVICE, BE THOROUGH. people will learn more and be more receptive to your advice if you explain your reasoning. for example, "go to the vet" is not as helpful as "you should call a vet because your snake appears to have problemX and it requires treatmentY", "that substrate is bad" is not as helpful as "that substrate is not a good choice for ball pythons because of reasonA and reasonB, so here is what i would recommend instead", etc. one of the things we pride ourselves in is being an educational forum for ball python owners, we want people to really understand the hows and whys behind the various aspects of ball python care. if someone has some substantial gaps in their knowledge, do not shame them for it, help them learn and fill those gaps.
  • BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE when you are giving advice, particularly if you are a beginner or if you don't actually have any direct experience with snakes at all. while you may think you know the answer to someone's question, you may give incomplete or incorrect advice that could make matters worse. while we appreciate your willingness to help, sometimes it's best to let someone more knowledgeable be the one to answer the question.

reporting posts/comments:

  • what to report: posts or comments that do not follow our guidelines as listed above, or break any reddit-wide rules.
  • what NOT to report: advice that is not definitively harmful to the snake. instead of reporting it, downvote it and debate it publicly, so others can participate and learn from the discussion.

upvoting/downvoting:

  • upvote posts and comments that contribute something to the community! upvotes help with visibility, so it's especially helpful to upvote questions and good advice.
  • downvote posts and comments that do not follow our rules and guidelines. if you see advice or husbandry practices you believe to be harmful, downvote AND discuss it - people don't learn anything from unexplained downvotes!

if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please send a message to the mods.

thank you all for making this community awesome!

Question ethical ways to get ball python?

• Upvotes

i'm looking into adopting a baby bp but i want to know the most ethical ways to do so that doesn't contribute to harmful breeding. i hear alot about morphmarket but i just can't accept that a website with over 10k listed bp's is a reliable source and that people there aren't just breeding them for colour. i don't have many options on fb groups or around locations near me so online recommendations are preferred, or even if there are ways to find reputable breeders that prioritize health and wellness of their snakes on morphmarket. i have all of the time in the world so even recommendations that would take longer to adopt are okay as long as the babies are safe and healthy

Enclosure Critique/Advice How's the new set up going?

Thumbnail

Hi! I'm going to be getting a ball python in about a month when I'm done setting the enclosure up. I had one ten years ago who sadly passed away back then, and I decided to commit to another friend!

I'm still waiting on a underground warm hide to go under the basking rock, and waiting for the heat lamp and bulbs to come.

I won't be using a heating pad because my last was injured by one, so I wanted to do a basking rock instead.

This is a 75g tank, bedding is cypress, two cork hiding logs on the cool side(right), and some ghost wood for enrichment and decoration. I am also waiting for two more enrichment items to come.

I have a misting system in case spraying and the water dish isn't enough humidity, would that excessive?

Opinions, advice, critique welcome please!

Thanks!

Question My boy looks fine but is a bit small

Thumbnail

Hes roughly a year old. I bought him at an expo around a year ago, I did ask for an age, the old lady said about a month old. I went about my day and told my friend who later said, "Isn't that a bit young to sale?" If I remeber correctly I weighed him after his initial two weeks and he was about 45 or 50 g. I don't know his real age, but he is about a year old now. Hes ~24 in and ~216g. However, he doesn't look underweight. He's on small/med adult mice, about to bump up to slightly larger now that hes over 200g. He should be roughly 400g. All of his parameters are met (his basking spot is 90F and I had just misted it). He eats frozen well (last ate 2 days ago, eats every week) and just gave me a solid shed about a week ago. Everything else is going fine, he's just not in the right weight range.

Escape! Shame her!

This girl is my 10 year old ball python. I have to put her in a bin for 2 weeks so I can make her enclosure into a vivarium. On the second day, she shoved the top up from the bottom drawer, dislodging 16 screws. She then escaped and went up two stories before I found her in a basket covered in dust and dirt. She is taking a bath currently, and I will return her to her bin with a rat right after.

Question - Heating/Temperatures How to secure temperature probe in tank?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Snake tax^^ Yesterday I had a scare. I left for about an hour and came back to the probe having fallen off the basking spot and the tank at 100F warm side and 86F in the cool spots. Was so scared my boy was cooking :( I know tape or any adhesive shouldnt be used in an enclosure, so how should I secure the probe to make sure this doesn’t happen again? He pulls all suction cups off the walls by climbing. I have to leave my boy for two days for the first time this weekend and this incident has me stressed. Basking spot is on top of a flat-roofed hide

Question Handling Help!

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hi all! I’d love some advice on handling this little guy. I’ve had him 3 weeks now and he’s eating, so I’ve been trying to start some handling.

I’m struggling on understanding when I’m pushing his boundaries too far, and when I’m doing it just enough to get him out of his comfort zone. So far, he hasn’t struck at me, but he definitely isn’t happy with handling. He will start balled up and breathing really heavy. Then he’ll usually poke his head out, but continue heavy breathing and stay frozen aside from tracking me with his head. He jerks away from any touch on his body, especially near the head.

Obviously I don’t want to get bit, but I’m not sure if I’m just being too cautious and reading too much into his body language. I don’t want to stress him out too much. Any tips on handling and body language are appreciated!

Photo is of him tracking me after I accidentally disturbed his sleep while going to check on the dampness in his humid hide. He had never gone in there before, so I think we were both surprised to see each other lol

Inherited a ball python in my classroom - needing advice!

Hi everyone!
First, I just want to say that this subreddit is incredible and I have learned so much over the past week through the resources that are available here.

I am a primary (pre k - kindergarten) Montessori teacher, and I am required to have a classroom "pet". My stepdaughter was looking to find another place for her ball python, Luci, and I jumped on the opportunity to introduce him to my classroom. For context, because this isn't a traditional early childhood classroom there aren't toys or lots of noisy things happening or children running around. Before Luci joined the classroom, I sat with them all and let them know what the expectations were regarding Luci joining us like never tapping the glass, touching the top of the tank or reaching their hands in, etc. I also put tape lines on the floor about a foot away from his enclosure and showed them all how they could stand with their toes on the line or bring a chair to the line so they could observe. He's been in the classroom for a week now and they have all done so wonderfully to respect him and his space. He's stayed in his hide during the day but will occasionally poke his head out to sniff around or he will rest his head on his body and watch us from his hide. There have been signs of him leaving the hide overnight like the fake foliage I have in his enclosure having moved.
With that being said...I want to make sure that I am doing my best job to ensure his safety and comfort. I will say that we are starting out with sparse equipment, but I have a delivery today of things like a DHP, thermostat, humidity gauge, infrared heat gun, etc. Unfortunately, the 40-gallon tank we have now was donated by a family and has a mesh screen top and is glass so that is what we are working with until we can get the funds to upgrade it. I have purchased hvac aluminum tape for the top to help with heat and humidity retention. Luckily, we're already in a place that stays pretty humid year-round.
I have purchased some clutter for his tank already, so we have added that and I also just got him a second hide.
As for my questions...the hide that he came with was one of the log hides with 2 open sides and I had already purchased an identical one before I realized that it is more beneficial to have a hide with one entrance. Would a quick fix be to cover one end of each of the hides completely with foliage or other clutter? Also, I have the DHP and I am ordering a UVB bulb and another clamp lamp. I have a regular lamp right next to his enclosure that we can point at it, but it's nowhere near bright enough for basking. Would a basking light be beneficial? I am trying to limit the number of hot things that children are able to touch. I do have his enclosure sort of in a corner so if need be, I can put a light in a corner that it would be difficult for them to get to even if they were curious.

If anyone has any suggestions or experience with having a snake around young children, I would love to hear from you about what worked and what didn't work. I'm hoping to use this opportunity to help children learn about snakes by introducing lessons in my classroom like parts of a snake, their habitat, what they eat, etc. And for my kindergarten students, I will have them help me record daily temperature checks, weight, length, feeding schedule, etc. I'm excited to dive into caring for a ball python and appreciate all of the insight!

Discussion He grew after switching to ASFs??

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Before (left) after (right)
It’s hard to see the difference, but I swear it’s not the angle

He’s four years old, fully grown, I bought him off a breeder, completely healthy, just oddly small at the time

He’s a very picky eater, only ate white rats, and even then it was a 50/50 whether he’d eat it. Sometimes he’d spit it out after grabbing it, or just ignore it. I’d have to leave it in the tank, turn the lights off, and walk away, so I switched him to african soft furs, amazing. Up there pressing his nose to the mesh circle where they thaw the moment he smells them and wraps the moment he faces it.

But is it normal for them to get bigger?? After the first feeding on asf, his head seemed bigger, I just brushed it off as extra protein getting to him. Three feedings later, he’s huge?? (Not literally, just clearly more thick). He used to be insanely light, now I can actually feel him in my hand. Even my mom noticed without me saying anything.

I thought he was just weirdly small, like any animal having size differences (I have an abnormally giant female bp too, absolute unit), so I didn’t think anything of it, but I didn’t expect him to grow?? Is this normal? He gets fed every two weeks with one small asf.

Has this happened to anyone else?? Is he just weird or is this normal?

Skin question?

Hi there! I’ve had a bp for a few years now, but I just adopted this girl from someone downsizing their collection. She arrived today and when I was looking her over I noticed these small pink spots. Is this something to worry about? I’ve never had a snake with white scales before so I wasn’t sure if this was normal. Naturally a couple google searches scared me into thinking it’s the beginning of scale rot or some other horrible thing…but I don’t think it is. I don’t want to make an emergency vet appointment if this is something super simple and well known.

Question Defensive/striking?

Okay i just have to ask because I genuinely dont know what to do or why this is happening, but my ball python was always the sweetest, always so curious, but suddenly she starting getting defensive, getting into the s pose whenever i opened up the enclosure, and today, i was going to open it to clean everything up, and my hand reached the glass so i could slide it open, and suddenly she lunged out, striking. The enclosure wasnt even open yet. She just lunged tho. Does anyone know what i could do? And is it safe to take her out Tomorrow because im gonna be doing a deep clean and also moving few stuff and adding more hides in it.

So I fully waterproofed my melanin Viv as was worried it wouldn't last, sealed all the gaps - put down uPVC sheeting on the floor and sealed that... Where does it bow?

Dead centre on the roof... The glass was basically hanging out I noticed today.

Quick fix with some weights to get it straight again and a PVC Viv ordered ... Early Christmas present for Belle I guess!
