Skin question?

Hi there! I’ve had a bp for a few years now, but I just adopted this girl from someone downsizing their collection. She arrived today and when I was looking her over I noticed these small pink spots. Is this something to worry about? I’ve never had a snake with white scales before so I wasn’t sure if this was normal. Naturally a couple google searches scared me into thinking it’s the beginning of scale rot or some other horrible thing…but I don’t think it is. I don’t want to make an emergency vet appointment if this is something super simple and well known.

How does my little pudding look? /Rate my enclosure.

Hi friends and danger noodle experts. I just wanted to check in with the noodle community and ask how my special boy looks, how his home looks, am I doing it right, is he over/under weight. I live to make this little man's life as perfect as I can.

Pudding is 4 years old. He is a Bumblebee Banana Ball (Spider gene, very bad but he's my one and only, I even confronted the store when we got him two years ago. I will never buy another spider). Thankfully his wobbliness isn't severe and he strikes well but I make it very easy for him by putting it right in his smoochable face.

He eats a small rat around every two weeks, sometimes I'll have to miss a week or when he's shedding I wait longer.

His hides are two half logs that I've wedged to the wall so 3 sides are covered. And a zilla rock/humid hide that I humidify during shedding.

His enclosure is a 2x2x4 and I've recently added more logs and things in there. He's coming out like that more and more since then so I think he likes those. Humidity stays consistently between 80-90. It's 89 currently.

Anyway, am I doing it right? Should I feed him a bigger rat? Should I make his enclosure bigger/the size of the whole room? Is there any way I can tell him exactly how cute he is and that I love him?

Thank you for coming to my Pudding seminar. If there are any questions to help answer my questions I will answer as promptly as possible.

Question ethical ways to get ball python?

• Upvotes

i'm looking into adopting a baby bp but i want to know the most ethical ways to do so that doesn't contribute to harmful breeding. i hear alot about morphmarket but i just can't accept that a website with over 10k listed bp's is a reliable source and that people there aren't just breeding them for colour. i don't have many options on fb groups or around locations near me so online recommendations are preferred, or even if there are ways to find reputable breeders that prioritize health and wellness of their snakes on morphmarket. i have all of the time in the world so even recommendations that would take longer to adopt are okay as long as the babies are safe and healthy

This girl is my 10 year old ball python. I have to put her in a bin for 2 weeks so I can make her enclosure into a vivarium. On the second day, she shoved the top up from the bottom drawer, dislodging 16 screws. She then escaped and went up two stories before I found her in a basket covered in dust and dirt. She is taking a bath currently, and I will return her to her bin with a rat right after.

Enclosure Critique/Advice How's the new set up going?

Thumbnail

Hi! I'm going to be getting a ball python in about a month when I'm done setting the enclosure up. I had one ten years ago who sadly passed away back then, and I decided to commit to another friend!

I'm still waiting on a underground warm hide to go under the basking rock, and waiting for the heat lamp and bulbs to come.

I won't be using a heating pad because my last was injured by one, so I wanted to do a basking rock instead.

This is a 75g tank, bedding is cypress, two cork hiding logs on the cool side(right), and some ghost wood for enrichment and decoration. I am also waiting for two more enrichment items to come.

I have a misting system in case spraying and the water dish isn't enough humidity, would that excessive?

Opinions, advice, critique welcome please!

Thanks!

It will be upgraded to a 55 when my snake gets older but I want to make sure I’m going in the right direction for the tank.

Any constructive criticism would be great! Just please be nice about it

Inherited a ball python in my classroom - needing advice!

Hi everyone!
First, I just want to say that this subreddit is incredible and I have learned so much over the past week through the resources that are available here.

I am a primary (pre k - kindergarten) Montessori teacher, and I am required to have a classroom "pet". My stepdaughter was looking to find another place for her ball python, Luci, and I jumped on the opportunity to introduce him to my classroom. For context, because this isn't a traditional early childhood classroom there aren't toys or lots of noisy things happening or children running around. Before Luci joined the classroom, I sat with them all and let them know what the expectations were regarding Luci joining us like never tapping the glass, touching the top of the tank or reaching their hands in, etc. I also put tape lines on the floor about a foot away from his enclosure and showed them all how they could stand with their toes on the line or bring a chair to the line so they could observe. He's been in the classroom for a week now and they have all done so wonderfully to respect him and his space. He's stayed in his hide during the day but will occasionally poke his head out to sniff around or he will rest his head on his body and watch us from his hide. There have been signs of him leaving the hide overnight like the fake foliage I have in his enclosure having moved.
With that being said...I want to make sure that I am doing my best job to ensure his safety and comfort. I will say that we are starting out with sparse equipment, but I have a delivery today of things like a DHP, thermostat, humidity gauge, infrared heat gun, etc. Unfortunately, the 40-gallon tank we have now was donated by a family and has a mesh screen top and is glass so that is what we are working with until we can get the funds to upgrade it. I have purchased hvac aluminum tape for the top to help with heat and humidity retention. Luckily, we're already in a place that stays pretty humid year-round.
I have purchased some clutter for his tank already, so we have added that and I also just got him a second hide.
As for my questions...the hide that he came with was one of the log hides with 2 open sides and I had already purchased an identical one before I realized that it is more beneficial to have a hide with one entrance. Would a quick fix be to cover one end of each of the hides completely with foliage or other clutter? Also, I have the DHP and I am ordering a UVB bulb and another clamp lamp. I have a regular lamp right next to his enclosure that we can point at it, but it's nowhere near bright enough for basking. Would a basking light be beneficial? I am trying to limit the number of hot things that children are able to touch. I do have his enclosure sort of in a corner so if need be, I can put a light in a corner that it would be difficult for them to get to even if they were curious.

If anyone has any suggestions or experience with having a snake around young children, I would love to hear from you about what worked and what didn't work. I'm hoping to use this opportunity to help children learn about snakes by introducing lessons in my classroom like parts of a snake, their habitat, what they eat, etc. And for my kindergarten students, I will have them help me record daily temperature checks, weight, length, feeding schedule, etc. I'm excited to dive into caring for a ball python and appreciate all of the insight!

Discussion He grew after switching to ASFs??

Thumbnail

Before (left) after (right)
It’s hard to see the difference, but I swear it’s not the angle

He’s four years old, fully grown, I bought him off a breeder, completely healthy, just oddly small at the time

He’s a very picky eater, only ate white rats, and even then it was a 50/50 whether he’d eat it. Sometimes he’d spit it out after grabbing it, or just ignore it. I’d have to leave it in the tank, turn the lights off, and walk away, so I switched him to african soft furs, amazing. Up there pressing his nose to the mesh circle where they thaw the moment he smells them and wraps the moment he faces it.

But is it normal for them to get bigger?? After the first feeding on asf, his head seemed bigger, I just brushed it off as extra protein getting to him. Three feedings later, he’s huge?? (Not literally, just clearly more thick). He used to be insanely light, now I can actually feel him in my hand. Even my mom noticed without me saying anything.

I thought he was just weirdly small, like any animal having size differences (I have an abnormally giant female bp too, absolute unit), so I didn’t think anything of it, but I didn’t expect him to grow?? Is this normal? He gets fed every two weeks with one small asf.

Has this happened to anyone else?? Is he just weird or is this normal?

Question Defensive/striking?

Okay i just have to ask because I genuinely dont know what to do or why this is happening, but my ball python was always the sweetest, always so curious, but suddenly she starting getting defensive, getting into the s pose whenever i opened up the enclosure, and today, i was going to open it to clean everything up, and my hand reached the glass so i could slide it open, and suddenly she lunged out, striking. The enclosure wasnt even open yet. She just lunged tho. Does anyone know what i could do? And is it safe to take her out Tomorrow because im gonna be doing a deep clean and also moving few stuff and adding more hides in it.

Humidity too high, help

I recently spent days setting up my 7 month old ball pythons enclosure. Before i transfer him into the 4x2x2 (he’s in a smaller enclosure right now) i wanted to get all the temps and humidity sorted but for days now it’s been sat at 99%. i misted it once a couple of days ago. I opened the door for about 10 minutes and it went down to 81% but that’s still too high. I was wondering if anyone knows what it’s down to?? I’ll put picture of my enclosure and substrate below.

Question My boy looks fine but is a bit small

Thumbnail

Hes roughly a year old. I bought him at an expo around a year ago, I did ask for an age, the old lady said about a month old. I went about my day and told my friend who later said, "Isn't that a bit young to sale?" If I remeber correctly I weighed him after his initial two weeks and he was about 45 or 50 g. I don't know his real age, but he is about a year old now. Hes ~24 in and ~216g. However, he doesn't look underweight. He's on small/med adult mice, about to bump up to slightly larger now that hes over 200g. He should be roughly 400g. All of his parameters are met (his basking spot is 90F and I had just misted it). He eats frozen well (last ate 2 days ago, eats every week) and just gave me a solid shed about a week ago. Everything else is going fine, he's just not in the right weight range.

Question - Feeding advice for new owner NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hello! I've had this 18-month-old female BP for 3 weeks now, and she hasnt eaten yet. I've been talking to her original owner a lot because he has 15+ very healthy ball pythons that are all great weights, great sheds and I can tell he cares a lot about the snakes which is why we keep in touch. He has given me so much great advice about everything BP related that I never found online when I did the many hours of research before even getting a tank, but I still wanted to get some more opinions so I can keep this beautiful snake healthy.

This snake was fed 4 weeks ago with the previous owner and shed the next week - the day before I got her. I gave her 2 weeks of space to let her get settled in, and once I started to see her exploring the tank at night, I tried her with a rat, and she... did not care. I was moving the rat (which was fully defrosted and warmed up with warm water) around with tongs, and after 10 minutes, I left the rat in the tank with her. She would come out of her hide to sniff it several times, but every time, she went back to her hide.

A week later, I tried giving her a rat again, and she had the same reaction, but this time when I went back to check later I found her lying ontop of the rat (picture above). The previous owner said this meant she was interested in the food and isn't too nervous to feed because she is resting out in the open of the tank with the rat. He suggested that perhaps I needed to start handling her so to help stimulate an appetite so I did this for 20 minutes 3 days in a row before I noticed she now doesn't come out of her hides at night so I think ive actually stressed her out more. I tried giving her a rat last night after not handling her for a few days, and I didn't even see her come out of her hide.

Her body language is very relaxed when I do handle her, after the initial minute of her staying balled up until I move her in my hands. Her tongue flicks out, she will explore whatever sofa we are on, she will come back towards me when I put her down, she will wrap around my neck, arms and waist and she will rest her head in my neck and my lap.

The previous owner also suggested putting her in the bathtub with an inch of warm water to stimulate appetite. I did this for about 10 minutes, and she seemed to enjoy.

She has a bioactive enclosure, which is 22-25°C at night and 28-34°C during the day. Her humidity ranges from 60-70%, which I know isn't the best it could be, but I'm still working on that too. I don't know her weight, but this snake is thick as hell and has clearly been feeding well so far in her life, so I've been assured she won't waste away into nothing anytime soon.

I'm sorry for the novel of a post, just a new and concerned owner who wants her unit of a snake to keep her heavyweight title ✊️

Discussion Melanin Viv's!?

Post image
6 Upvotes

So I fully waterproofed my melanin Viv as was worried it wouldn't last, sealed all the gaps - put down uPVC sheeting on the floor and sealed that... Where does it bow?

Dead centre on the roof... The glass was basically hanging out I noticed today.

Quick fix with some weights to get it straight again and a PVC Viv ordered ... Early Christmas present for Belle I guess!

Question My girl starts breathing heavy when I go to handle her. Is that normal as she gets used to me or a sign that she’s too stressed out for handling?

I’ve had her for about a month now and she’s been eating great so I think she’s content overall, but it makes me feel so bad to see her scared like that even temporarily :(

I’ve never seen her ball up and she’s never hissed or tried to strike at me, she just freezes up for a second and starts breathing heavily when I go into her enclosure or first pick her up.

She calms down after a minute or two and starts flicking her tongue, exploring, etc. so I’m not sure if this is just normal juvenile nerves or a sign that I should put her back and try again another day.
