A stranger helped me change my tire downtown. Can we help him find work?
I was driving near 9th and Congress when I felt something wrong with my tire. At the stoplight, a guy sitting on a bench pointed it out: I was driving on the rim.
I pulled over, and before I could even figure out what to do, he was already helping me put on my spare.
His name is David. We talked while he worked, and I learned that he’s currently homeless and was recently laid off. He said he’d sent his résumé to about 26 companies in the past two days.
It took him just five minutes to change the tire. When he finished, he said, “Alright, you’re all set,” and started walking away. He never asked for money.
I stopped him so I could send him some money through Cash App to thank him. But after hearing about his job search, I wanted to see if I could help with that, too.
David mentioned previously working for AAA and is looking for work, including custodial or maintenance jobs around Austin. I work remotely in software, so I don’t have an office where I can ask about an opening, but I do have his number.
If anyone knows of a custodial or maintenance position, or has another job lead I could pass along, please comment or message me.
He went out of his way to help a stranger on the side of the road. I’d love to return the favor.
This is why I love Austin.
