Hey all,
I just started Nucala and I’m really curious to hear from other runners, particularly anyone who noticed improvements in their running pace or endurance after starting treatment.
A little background on me:
I have adult-onset asthma, generally moderate. I’ve never been hospitalized, but some years are definitely worse than others. I’ve had two nasal polyp surgeries and essentially have no sense of smell. I’m on Breo daily and have needed 2–4 short courses of prednisone per year for roughly the last 15 years. When I catch a respiratory bug, it feels like I can never shake it.
I’ve gone through cycles of getting in shape, falling off the wagon, and getting back into shape probably four times over the last 15 years.
But this time feels different.
About three years ago, I was running three 10Ks a week at around an 8:30/mile pace. Then life happened, I stopped running consistently, and gained about 30 pounds.
I’m working my way back now and have already lost 10 pounds, but unlike previous times, my running performance just isn’t coming back. I’m struggling to maintain a 14-minute mile and can barely finish a 5K without feeling completely gassed.
I know being out of shape and carrying extra weight are contributing factors, but I can’t help wondering how much of my limitation is actually uncontrolled airway inflammation.
So here’s what I’m really curious about:
What were your mile times or typical running pace before and after Nucala? Did you notice a meaningful improvement in endurance or your ability to push yourself? How long after starting treatment did you notice a difference? Did it feel like your lungs were finally keeping up with your legs?
I’m not expecting Nucala to magically make me fit again, but I’m hoping it might remove some of the respiratory limitations that seem to be holding me back.
Would love to hear actual before-and-after experiences, especially from anyone who was already trying to run regularly before starting treatment!
