Building an all-Canadian cheese board: can you actually pull off 13 provinces and territories?

I live in Ottawa and recently hosted family from France. I wanted to show them that Canada produces incredible cheese. Finding great options from Ontario and Quebec was simple, and grabbing selections from PEI and Alberta was not too difficult either. But that is where it stalled.
How hard would it actually be to assemble a cheese board with all 13, featuring one cheese from every single province and territory?

Have you heard of the CCF?

The Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, to be clear. I have a degree in Canadian history and my parents were Canadian historians so I really have no idea what an average Canadian knows. The CCF played an important part in shaping the Canadian state and its social policies for decades, and its successor is still around today. But do you know who they were?

And, bonus round, where in the country are you from?

Why doesn't Canada have its own big car companies?

Countries smaller than Canada have car companies that are famous, like Volvo from Sweden, but Canada doesn't. Why is this?

Where should I go for a last minute Canadian trip? Help me decide!

Im currently In Saskatoon and was making my way back to Vancouver but I found out I’m only getting a short 7 days off before my next rotation so I was thinking maybe I should just go off and adventure.
What I’m hoping for is; somewhere unique to go to & live fairly cheaply for 6 days In maybe some kind of hostels or cheaper hotels .
About a 16-1700$ budget but I’m a cheap date I’d like to spend wisely.
I like beers, food, live music and old buildings are neat. I work In nature as a career so not really looking for any intense hikes or things like that.

Shipping an item

Hi all. I need a Christmas tree move for Ontario to Calgary. I am wondering if anyone has found any reasonable options to ship this. It’s too big for Canada post and other companies are quitting between $700-$1200. Which is more than the tree. Let me know if anyone has found any reasonable options. Thanks

If Canada were to be a parliamentary republic, how should the head of state be chosen?

In Barbados, which is a parliamentary republic as a result of Elizabeth dying, they had a system where the PM and Opposition Leader could agree on who should be nominated. If they can, then the speaker asks the MPs if they object. If anyone does, then they hold a contested vote. If the PM and leader of the opposition can't agree, then they have a contested vote. They vote until 2/3 of each house agree on who it should be. They can be dismissed from the job by a tribunal formed specifically to judge them based on misconduct.

Ireland directly elects them, and is also a Westminster system as Canada is.

Edit: I for some reason can't reply directly and so I have to address them here. Germany and Italy do not have their chancellors or prime ministers choosing a president. That is the exclusive role of the electoral college in both countries, in Germany consisting of the Bhndestag and an equal Number of delegates chosen by the state parliaments, and in Italy it is the members of both houses and some regional council presidents. The electors vote by secret ballot with runoff ballots if needed. I don't know how this could have been interpreted as prime minister and parliament.

Is Canada a car centric country? Does it differ substantially from the U.S. in this regard?

I’m asking because the urbanist sub didn’t see much difference.

Do you remember the this hour has 22 minutes skit “the new littlest hobo”? It was a taxidermied dog tied to a cart with a rope.

I have been searching the last 30 minutes and can’t find it anywhere.

I’m looking for the clip.

Also random vent about how horrid it is what googles done to itself.

Used Book Websites

Helloo, I’m looking for a thrift/used book store, I usually use thriftbooks.com, but it’s a US website and I don’t think paying the shipping is worth it. Does anyone know any Canadian versions or anything similar?

Locked - Brigaded Do you know any Maple MAGA members?

American here in peace.

I was surprised to learn about Maple MAGA, as I can't understand why a Canadian would support Trump. I learned about Maple MAGA specifically in the context of Alberta, but apparently they exist in other provinces too?

My question is, do you know any? Why do they support Trump?

Watched a British TV programme last night about the place. A reporter called Simon Reeve went up & met various people, which made me wonder how many Canadians have actually been.
I’ve been to Canada but only for 3 weeks in Alberta so know how vast & beautiful your country is ( would love to come again)
Thanks!

Hello Canada, can we BE Friends?👋🏻

Hi everyone,

I hope it’s OK to ask this here; if not, I apologise.

My husband and I are going on our belated honeymoon from 20 October to 1 November, which will take us right through our first wedding anniversary. We’ll be in Vancouver first, then we’ll fly to Calgary and from there we’ll drive to Jasper, Canmore and Banff. Yes, it’ll probably be cold, but we’ve got warm clothes, so we’ll be fine. I do have a few questions, though:

  1. We’ve never been to Canada before and would like to behave appropriately. Are there any customs that are essential to observe but not widely known?

  2. We’re the sort of people who always potter round the supermarkets when we’re in other countries – what are the best snacks? I already know about beavertails, Tim Hortons and maple syrup, but what are some typical Canadian snacks?

  3. Is it normal, or even appreciated, if we bring snacks from our own country (Germany) to the hotel reception? Is that okay?

I’m definitely really looking forward to visiting your country, and who knows – maybe we’ll make some friends? Is It easy to make Friends in canada?

What are common jurisdiction misconceptions

What issues do you think are commonly blamed on the wrong level of government? For example I think the homeless issue in my city is commonly blamed on the municipal government when they have very little control over the contributing factors

To those that visited the Netherlands/lived there, what items did you not have in Canada that you found in the Netherlands? Looking for gifts for my Canadian friends!

disclaimer: I did read the faq, but I could only find threads for the UK/US/German gifts.

I have some friends coming over tommorow from Canada and want to give them some Dutch gifts. I had 'pepernoten' and 'hagelslag' in mind, but I want to give a bit more than that. Does not necessarily have to be food I guess, though I will definitely make them try some bitterballen, kibbeling and frikandellen.

Maybe you guys can help, anything you really liked here that you couldn't find in Canada?

So, I might be tripping, but it's such a specific memory I have that I might as well ask: Does anyone ever remember this Eraser that smelled like Lysol Lemon Cleaner, it was just an ordinairy eraser with a darky grey maybe dark blue paper sleeve. But I've never found them since.

So the title speaks for itself, and my parents bought like a ton of these at the Dollarama back when we lived in Calgary and when I first went to school (2008-2010). I don't remember if the paper sleeve on them was of a mountain with cursive text or like a dark grey, cloudy day (though to be honest, a lot of my memories in Calgary are just dark grey, cloudy days and early snow). And because of that, I'm not entirely sure they were branded as Lemon Scented erasers or anything like that; they may have come in a multipack covered in plastic wrap. But that's all I can really remember about them.

Fast forward to 2010: we move to Brampton, I live out the rest of my life and never have the lemon cleaner eraser again. I do remember them from time to time and tried searching it up on Google, heck with AI I was kind of hoping I'd get an exact match, but nope. Nothing.

If anyone else knows what I'm talking about, that's cool. If not...hi.

Scoffed

Thinking about kidspeak/slang the other day, I remembered "scoff". When I was younger (late 60s early 70s) this was a very common word for steal. "Someone scoffed my bike while I was in the store"! I can't find that meaning anywhere. The only definitions listed are to deride something or eat greedily (eat greedily was scarf or scorf, to us) I wonder if this was a Canadian thing or maybe a BC thing? Could have been so localized that it was just my school/neighborhood. Hell, maybe my friends and I made it up... thoughts?

Driving from Toronto to NYC in a Company-Paid Rental Car

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to drive from Toronto to New York City (Manhattan), and I'm honestly so confused about how the toll system works. I'm hoping someone here can help me figure things out!

A little background:

I'm a university student from Vancouver, currently doing an internship in Toronto. My employer has provided me with an Avis rental car, which is paid for using my manager's company credit card (since I'm an intern and don't have my own corporate card).

I've driven across the border from Vancouver to Seattle before, and it was pretty straightforward. But driving from Toronto to Manhattan seems like a completely different story, especially when it comes to tolls.

I'll be driving a compact SUV, and I'll be the only person in the car.

Here are my questions:

  1. How exactly do tolls work between Toronto and Manhattan? Are there toll booths where I can pay manually, or is everything electronic?
  2. Roughly how many tolls should I expect to pay? Can I pay them directly using my personal credit card?
  3. How do tolls work with an Avis rental car? This is my biggest concern. Since the rental is under my employer's account and my manager's company credit card is on file, I really don't want any toll charges going to that card. It would be awkward and complicated to sort out reimbursement afterward. Is there a way to guarantee that all tolls are charged directly to me instead?
  4. Should I get an E-ZPass? I've heard about it but have no idea how it works. Is it worth getting for a round trip? Where can I buy one, and how do I set it up with a rental car?
  5. Am I even eligible for an E-ZPass? I'm an international student studying in Canada, so I'm not sure whether there are any residency requirements.
  6. Are there any hidden fees or rental-car toll charges I should watch out for? I've read that rental companies sometimes charge additional administrative fees for tolls, and I'd really like to avoid those.

TL;DR: I'm driving from Toronto to Manhattan in an Avis rental car paid for by my employer. I want to personally cover 100% of the tolls and associated fees without anything being charged to my manager's company credit card. What's the easiest way to make that happen?

I'd really appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who's made this drive in a rental car or dealt with Avis and E-ZPass before!

Please help a very confused student out :')

Thanks so much!

Is it fine to leave my middle name off a bank account?

I’m an immigrant originally from a country where middle names aren’t a thing. I just changed my name legally in Canada, and for the first time in my life I have a middle name (moved previous first name to middle, and new first name).

Went in to update my information today, TD said they didn’t have a separate field for middle names but offered they could put both first + middle in the field for first name, in which case I’ll always be addressed as first + middle in the online system, in communications, etc. I told them to just leave it off then but I’m now having second thoughts.

What do most people do in this situation? Apologize if this shows my ignorance, but I’ve been in Canada for a decade and just never thought about this.

Harvey's Restaurant Pickle Policy

Hi everyone,

Has anyone else's local Harvey's enacted a 4 pickle maximum for their burger assembly?

I also noticed that they also only give one pickle per burger that does not specify extra pickles... and only 2 pickles if you request extra pickles without giving a clear number.

(I posted this on r/NoStupidQuestions, though I realized this sub would be more appropriate for a Canadian food chain!)
