Shipping an item

Hi all. I need a Christmas tree move for Ontario to Calgary. I am wondering if anyone has found any reasonable options to ship this. It’s too big for Canada post and other companies are quitting between $700-$1200. Which is more than the tree. Let me know if anyone has found any reasonable options. Thanks

Unless this is a priceless, one of a kind family heirloom, there is zero reason to move a christmas tree across the country. buy a new one when you get there

You’re better off selling the one you have and buying a new one in Calgary.

Honestly it would be cheaper just to buy a new tree

Are you moving yourself? The cheapest option is probably just driving it down, renting a uHaul or something.

Or just buying a new tree in Calgary. It's big enough and awkward enough that it's going to be pretty expensive, no matter how you try to ship it, I would expect.

My line of work has me dealing with shipping/receiving, and $700-$1200 is pretty much accurate for that size of a shipment for that far.

Unless you know someone who's going to personally drive it out there for you, I doubt you'll find anything much cheaper, esp given gas prices these days.

I've shipped a trade show booth Toronto to Whistler B.C. for $150 one way. $700 is outrageous. Ship it ground, no insurance at a UPS store.

Did you use UPS?because we use UPS as well and for trade show cases (AV field) we typically use a private courier because it's always cheaper than UPS. And it's always usually in the $350-$500 range so I think for a tree, $500-$700 wouldn't be out of the question.

Yup, hard case almost similar to the size a christmas tree box would be, UPS Ground.

How big of a box is it in?

Quite a while ago I shipped a solid wood door coast to coast by Purolator, and even if costs have doubled, that would be less than $200.

What were the rough dimensions of the package you shipped? It matters b/c a Christmas tree is probably a nightmare to ship volume-wise, bot even factoring weight.

I’m assuming it’s an artificial tree that packs into a cardboard box, not a 6- or 8-foot fir tree from the forest.

My package was a solid wood exterior door wrapped in cardboard, about 80 x 34 x 4 inches, and weighing not less than 50 pounds.

More recently my sister sent a wooden trunk packed with various items including some heavy ceramics about a quarter of the way across the country for a similar cost. I should think this package would be a similar size as what OP has.

Sell on marketplace, use the funds to subsidize a new one.

You're not shipping it with the rest of your belongings?

Ask Santa to transport it on xmas eve.

I really miss Greyhound for this very reason. They had amazing prices for shipping freight.

A live tree?

Try DHL

Uncertain if this a thing, but used to be able to send large boxes by train.

We moved ours with the movers but otherwise probably cheaper to sell and buy a new one. We actually probably need a new one because now that in the new house it won't fit the best. We had to downsize.
