META Community Guideline: Revulsion ≠ Downvote

Do not downvote simply because you find a post repulsive or stupid. In fact, you should do the opposite. We want as many non-vegans to see our answers as possible, and Reddit post visibility is predicated on upvotes. When you downvote a post, it means you want as few people as possible exposed to this sub.

Did the OP ask a question respectfully & genuinely? (And no, simply being a non-vegan question does not make it disrespectful or disingenuous.) Then don't downvote it.

Most of us weren't always vegan. Hence the reason for our sub: so people can understand our views and hopefully adopt them.

Do not turn this into another DebateAVegan voting system. If you are in the habit of downvoting non-vegan posts simply for being non-vegan, stop or leave the sub please.

If someone asks a clearly disingenuous question like ''why you all like murdering plants?'', report the post under Rule 10, then scroll past it.

If someone asks questions that are indicative of what we know typical non-vegan societal rhetoric to be, on a sub whose purpose is for non-vegans to ask us questions, downvoting just shows us vegans to be hostile. People are put on the defensive over a meaningless downvote, setting them up to close themselves off to hearing what we have to say. This hurts the animals.

We should ensure that if people are going to be closed off to veganism, it is not due to a downvote.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Do vegans need to supplement iodine?

A lot of vegans say that the only supplement you need on a vegan diet is b12, but how important is it to supplement iodine?

Ethics How do you feel about killing spotted lantern flies or other invasive species?

I was talking to my sister last night who is a vegan (I am a vegetarian) and the topic of invasive species came up since my state (in the US) has recently had spotted lantern flies arrive and the official recommendation is to kill them and report them as they are extremely invasive and kill local plants. I said that when I have to I squish them but I don't take any joy in it, I think that doing what I can to preserve our local ecosystem is more important than the life of these insects. She said she hasn't come across any where she lives yet but would likely take the same stance as me.

I was wondering how other vegans feel about this? Or about instances where institutions might be killing invasive species but you are not directly being asked to do so (for instance, invasive Lion Fish are killed but you aren't personally doing the killing).

I think it's complicated because invasive species are always introduced by human error or ignorance, so it isn't their fault they are there but at the same time are so detrimental to the ecosystems they are introduced in that for the greater good they should be limited somehow, and while somehow limiting the breeding population would be ideal imo sterilization isn't really feasible so for me it lands on a utilitarian tilt of what the greatest good or least harm would be in the big picture. I often see vegans talk about being against the exploitation of animals and I think this creates an additional layer since it isn't necessarily exploitation (although often times these animals were introduced due to some sort of exploitation)

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Is it unethical to consume your pet hens eggs?

This is probably the most ridiculous, stupid question ever.. but I’ve been wondering for ages.

Let’s say you have a pet hen and it lays its eggs naturally as it typically does then you consume it. Would that be considered wrong? Obviously I know it wouldn’t be vegan as it’s a still an animal product, but to my knowledge there’s no harm involved.

Please do elaborate and educate me!

Health Are thier any nutritional issues related to veganism that can cause long periods?

I've been vegan since July and am actively in the midst of a so far 3 week long period(walk in dismissed me and told me to go to OB/GYN im waiting for an appointment) since my mom brought it up i thought I'd ask the group if this was at all a plausible route as it's the only distinct change I've had recently. I'm still getting used to the different things I need to look at nutritionally with veganism, so I'd like to make sure this isn't something a supplement(outside of the iron I already take for my cycle) could help with.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) If you dont eat animal for a decade then ate meat would you get really sick?

I havent ate animal in like 10 years... if i HYPOTHETICALLY ate like beef or chicken... would my body think it was like an invader and get sick from this mysterious thing? I do NOT have any intention of eating meat. I do NOT want to eat meat... I was just wondering... coz like... you eat like dirt... or a worm youd probably get sick...

If the body hasn't had meat in 10 years... half of my lifespan... would it be like what da fuck is that and get ill?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Did the environment play any part in you giving up milk, or was it purely about the animals?

Hi all! I’m a biology student at Imperial College London, and I’m exploring a startup idea for my course: shaping the gut microbes of calves early in life so that they produce much less methane as adult cows. Before going further, I want to understand how people who’ve given up dairy think about this.

For those who’ve cut out milk: was the environmental side (e.g. methane emissions from cows) ever part of your decision, or was it strictly about the animals? And would lower-emission dairy make any difference to you, or not at all?

I’m not trying to start a debate or sell anything, I just want to hear the different reasons people have. Honest answers (including “no way”) are really helpful. Thanks in advance! 🙏

Health Any vegans tried the low fodmap diet and have tips?

I've been vegan for like half my life now (I'm almost 30) and am not willing to give it up. I have severe IBS and my dietician is recommending I start the low fodmap diet but it seems so restrictive especially as a vegan. Has anyone done it that has tips for what you actually eat as a vegan with ibs?

Used/thrifted items Curious how you would feel about purchasing 2 hand leather items from thrift stores?

I’m just curious where people stand with the topic. I see both sides of it and just wondering how you feel about that. For me I try to avoid it and not feed into that industry leather even if it is second hand but on the other hand if no one buys the 2 hand leather items and they just get tossed in the trash would it still be bad to still buy them?

Health How to get optimal ferritin level?

Hey everyone!! I went vegan beginning of this year, and I recently got bloodwork done. Everything looked great, iron, folate, and b12, except for my ferritin and my mch, which was slightly deficient. My ferritin is 12, and I want to get it into an optimal range. I don't want to just be not deficient, I want to really thrive. So, I want to know vegans that have good ferritin levels (for me, this is about 50 and above), how did you do it? What are some tips?

To be clear, I have been struggling with iron levels for a decade now, way before I went vegan. As a vegan, my iron levels are the best they've been for a while. It's only that ferritin I'm really looking to raise. I'm currently taking the MegaFood blood builder to help.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Question for vegan women-has your period ever stopped?

Hi there!
I’m a vegan for ethical reasons (animal welfare and the environment) and deeply passionate about it. I’m absolutely not trying to suggest that the vegan diet cannot be nutritionally sound and healthy.
I’ve been vegetarian since childhood but gave up eggs and dairy around three months ago, and over that time period my period has started to behave very weirdly. I have been focusing on a high protein, whole foods diet of beans, grains, legumes and tofu. I supplement daily and take a dedicated vegan multivitamin which includes the majority of the nutrients that vegans often lack (b12, iron, zinc, iodine etc) and an algal oil supplement for DHA and EPA. However, my last period was around six weeks ago. It’s always been regular but last time stopped on day two during the heavy phase and didn’t come back. I’ve researched something called Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, and have tried to boost the calories and fat I consume with olive oil, nut butters etc, and lower the fiber, but it still hasn’t returned. I’m well aware that I should seek qualified medical advice on this and am in the process of doing so, but I’m wondering if anyone here has faced this issue and, if so, if it was resolved? My ex-vegan friend apparently lost her period for a whole year and she claims it returned after she introduced eggs, but that’s obviously something I’d like to avoid.
Thank you in advance!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Thoughts on buying a silk bonnet before making the swap to veganism?

I hear a lot of vegans/vegetarians doing one last meal or something as a little farewell before they completely make the swap. I was thinking, instead of having a meal, perhaps I could just play it smart and buy a silk bonnet, something which would actually last me ages. I’d probably buy two. If I lost them or something, id probably just sob and buy satin despite my thoughts on it seeing as it’s supposed to be a one time final purchase before I make the swap rather than something I’d buy again. What do you guys think?

Edit: Ended up buying a satin bonnet

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What are some good milk alternatives I can use? Details below before commenting pls

I like almond milk (as long as it's sweetened, unsweetened just tastes like straight almonds and I hate it tbh lmao), but the environmental impacts of almonds have started to bother me, so I stopped buying it

I dislike coconut and oat milk despite all the brands I've tried

Is there anything else?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Could someone recommend me an actually filling breakfast?

Hi All,

Vegan for +-5 years here. I've dabbled in intermittent fasting last year, but due to a change in schedule have been getting back into eating breakfast. However...

I'm almost never filled up by my breakfast! I always crave some more, or something sugary/sweet afterwards.. Please help!

Currently, I've been eating either granola with soy yoghurt, fruits, nuts + chia OR oatmeal (based on soy/oatmylk) with same ingredients.

Could someone get me into maybe having savoury breakfast that actually decently fills me up?

Thank you!

Edit: Thank you everyone for your replies!! Amazing. I won't respond to all comments, but I'll have a look later and type some replies :-).

I've been vegan for about 10 years but I'm lazy in the kitchen. I'm currently heavier than I've ever been at around 250 lbs. I'm hoping to find something I can eat regularly that's low to no effort that will keep me full

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Vegan mince with no meaty texture

Since becoming vegan, I’ve avoided soy mince/TVP because I didn’t like the texture of meat at all. I’ve tried soy chunks but they tasted too much like meat. I’m looking to increase my protein intake so I was wondering if there are any soy mince or TVP brands that don’t taste too meaty? Preferably brands available in the UK
