Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For 10.15.2026 Are your allergies bad today?

Trying to figure out if I have a cold or if allergies ramped up today. It's pretty wild how hard this has hit me. I noticed ragweed is high but...wanted to crowdsource some info.

Thank you in advance...

Edit: yall, I would typically reply to everyone but I feel pretty gnarly. Just know that I love and appreciate you for replying and helping me verify that I am not alone. With the allergies, that is.

Looking For Estrogen/Estrodial shortage, anyone have luck at local pharmacies?

Hi, and help! Has anyone had luck filling any of their prescriptions lately? I was on the twice-weekly patch last summer, switched to gel (.5mg), and Fred Meyer is out of what I need. I am just so frustrated with this whole process because I truly need it. Woke up about 10 times last night due to surges/hot flashes and am not functioning well today. :-(

Looking For Which independent movie theatre has the best food options?

Title. We tried out Laurelhurst theater, which although it had great popcorn, the food options are limited to pizza (and not great pizza at that). So which theater in town has the best food in your opinion?

Looking For Resources to fight HOA in Portland ?

I have found out that my hoa is not maintaining records like it is supposed to.

They are violating bylaws by granting permission to rent to their friends but when someone with hardship like myself wants to rent out their unit, they deny them the permission.

I have asked them for records that I am legally entitled to see but they have not responded, they didn’t deny because that would be illegal to do so.

There is a management company that HOA hires - bluestone.

I don’t have thousands of dollars to fight their lawyers. I spent $500 on a lawyers just to ask if I have a case. He said I do but I have to spend several thousands to fight it. I am not trying to sue anyone for money. I just want positive change.

Are there any resources available to me to fight such mafia type Hoa ?

Or is selling my townhouse and moving away the only option I have?

follow up: Where do I go / who do I contact to get a TSPC license?

Looking For Carpet Beetle Exerminator Recs?

• Upvotes

Hi all.

We live in a cool 20s Portland bungalow. We have cats and try to avoid synthetic material. Therefore, we have had carpet beetles since the day we moved in and after seven years, I am raising the white flag.

What we've done:

- Frequently vacuum extensively with a HEPA bag, esp during spring

- Run all animal fiber through a hot dryer for 30mins and then seal in vacuum bags.

- Regularly wash clothing and household goods and dry for 30min at hottest temp possible

- Cedar satches (I know they don't work, but I need the placebo okay)

- Lavender (see above)

I do all of the above at least 3x/year, and yesterday I found a larva mouthing hopefully at a (still sealed) vacuum bag and my soul left my body. I don't know where it came from. During this summer's purge, I fucking bleached anything that could be bleached and wiped down everything else that couldn't. Every time I see larve/casing/adults/eggs, I spend the entire day cleaning.

Folks, I am defeated.

I am a grad student with a huge thesis and holes in her favorite jacket. I. just. can't.

Does anyone have a recommendation for someone else to come in and make this problem go away? Obvs would prefer not to spend $$$ but also...if their hourly rate is cheaper than my therapist, I have a pen in my hand ready to sign a contract.

tl;dr

I need a rec for a carpet beetle exterminator, because otherwise I'm burning this place to the foundation and myself along with it.

TY!!!

Looking For Any orthopedic doctors that will perform a hip replacement on a fat person?

This is embarrassing, but here goes. 60f-My left hip is essentially bone on bone and I need a hip replacement. I'm also fat. I've been told by the ortho doc I was referred to that I need to lose 30 pounds and I am trying. It's going very slowly, and I've only been eating 1 meal a day, so far have lost about 5 pounds last month. The problem is, I will not have health insurance after the first of the year since it is going up to a cost I can no longer afford, so I need to have this done soon.

I'm running out of time and tired of living every day in pain. Every step is painful and l am starting to use a cane due to unsteadiness. If anyone here knows a doctor that could help me I would appreciate it. I will sign whatever form promising not to sue if something goes wrong. I have BC/BS if that helps, and I live in Clackamas County, but will go anywhere in the Portland area. Not really looking for a discussion about my diet, just a doctor that will help a fat old lady in pain. Thanks.

Update: Wow, thank you everyone who responded and offered advice, support, and names! I had no expectations on what kind of response I would get but this has been so helpful and I appreciate you all for your input. Now I have some calls to make! Have a lovely day!

Looking For Where can I find a shop that sells video game/movie collectibles, figures, or memorabilia?

• Upvotes

Looking to get something for a friends birthday but unfortunately I started planning too late for Etsy shipping. Looking for something like a Master Chief statue, a Pip Boy, Star Wars ships, posters, or even like a Dragon or Samurai statue for their game room. Something that can be put on a shelf as decor.

Everything I find on Maps has mostly games, plush toys, and small figurines in the images and I cant spend an entire day visiting every shop.

Edit: HECK YEAH! Thank you everyone I have several great options to check out now that have exactly what I’m looking for!

Looking For Options for driving lessons that offers more than 4 courses? Additionally, what can I do when I don’t have a car to practice?

• Upvotes

Most options I see lists 4 courses for around 6-10 hours total. However, I feel as though I need more than I just that. I have driving anxiety bad enough that I’ll actually get recurring nightmares about it… I see that the places I’ve looked at suggest doing my own practice between the courses, but I’m wondering what I should do when I don’t have a car for personal practice.

I live east of Portland where I’m also close to Gresham too for suggestions in Gresham.

Looking For First-time buyer programs.. did I save myself out of assistance?

I'm a first-time homebuyer. I followed my parents' advice to save 20% down. Went from $60k income earlier in my career to finally reaching $126k (just got the promotion). I scrimped, saved, basically put my life on hold for 4 years for this down payment, now have roughly a 20% down payment saved.

Now that I'm seriously looking into buying, I've come across Oregon and Portland first-time buyer programs. I was younger when I started saving and didn't even realize these programs existed. Now I'm wondering if I worked hard to save and increase my income only to price myself out of assistance I might have qualified for earlier.

Are there still programs I might qualify for? I'm confused as hell for my particular situation. Anyone's experience is welcomed, thank you.

edit: this is one of the assistance programs I saw:

"The program provides closing costs and down payment assistance to eligible first-time and first-generation homebuyers who are at or below 100% of area median income (AMI). The maximum amount of DPA funds available to each eligible homebuyer is up to $60,000 or 20% of the purchase price, whichever is less, depending on the specific program and eligibility requirements. In some instances, DPA funds are provided in the form of a grant or forgivable second lien." https://www.oregon.gov/ohcs/homeownership/homebuyers/Pages/down-payment-assistance.aspx

Looking For Who else is doing Rose City Yarn Crawl MC/KAL?

I’m doing the MCAL for the first time and i’m excited!!! I feel bad bc I don’t have that wool yarn kinda money so I’m not going to be able to get my skeins from one of the Crawl shops, but it’ll still be fun to do. The preview pattern and clue just dropped and I’m stoked!!! It has quite a few elements I’ve never worked with before so I’m looking forward to learning.

Who else is participating??

Looking For Interested in Mushroom hunting with new people?

Post image
131 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I am planning another mushroom hunt on the 18th! Time flys and the season won’t last forever so I hope to see some of you at the Portland Women’s Forum Scenic Viewpoint. We will meet there at 10:00 and will drive to larch Mountain from there to hunt.
Please bring water, good hiking shoes, and extra clothes in case the mountain is cold or raining. A snack is a good idea. I hope to see you on the mountain

Looking For How much do you pay for professional vivid hair color per year?

I have short, fine, dark dishwater blonde hair and have been thinking of coloring it baby pink with natural roots. My hairstyle is very simple, I usually have about 1.5 inches taken off the ends every 8 weeks, no layering or special styling.

People who have their hair professionally colored: how much does it cost in Portland to maintain per year including root touch-ups and trims?

Looking For Stylist rec for long hair teen boy?

My son has a very shaggy haircut but needs a bit of shaping. The stylist we’ve been going to for years doesn’t really do a good job on his hair anymore so looking to switch it up. Would prefer a salon over a barber. We are in SE, so that area preferred, but anything east side would work.

Looking For Volunteering?

I am desperately trying to find the right volunteering gig for myself.

I was volunteering at the arboretum and it was great but it was too physical for my body (i already have a physical job, adding on was too much.)

I have volunteered other places with little luck or no response or with very unorganized leaders.

Where do y’all volunteer?
Have you seen any posts recently looking for volunteers?

Looking For How do I find the Reuben vendors selling sandwiches from a cooler under the Morrison bridge?

I heard rumors of an older couple selling delicious Reuben sandwiches from a cooler on week days in the SE bridge area (somewhere near the old Montage). I finally have a mid-week day off tomorrow and want to do a meat treasure hunt.

Legend or rumor?

Looking For Areas and/or property management to avoid?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to make a move from the suburbs into downtown in the next month or so. As a reclusive person I don't have much experience downtown but I am looking to live within a 15-20 minute drive to the airport for employment reasons. I am hoping some kind people will give me advice on areas that would generally be good to avoid living in and/or property management companies to avoid renting from.

More than happy to DM if you don't feel comfortable naming a place or entity, just trying to go from one unpleasant renting experience to an enjoyable one. I'm not sure if there are more peaceful/slower areas that would be good for an introvert to hang around in and try to become comfortable. I've generally been looking at the areas north of 26 and between 205 & 5.

Thanks! :)

Looking For Have you turned your heat on? Round 2

A month ago I posted this same question and I finally gave in. It was 61 in the house when I woke up and I feel like that's a reasonable temperature in the house to turn it on.
Thoughts?

Looking For Wine tunnels in Hosford-Abernethy?

One of my neighbors mentioned that our neighborhood used to have wine tunnels under the houses during Prohibition. Something about the Italian mafia owning the houses around here and putting in tunnels between houses. Apparently they were shut off by the FBI.

Not sure if she’s losing her memory or if this is real. Before I start digging… anyone heard about this?
