Looking for games that scratch a specific exploration itch

Post image
7 Upvotes

I've recently become addicted to exploring Hollow Knight and Silksong, and I realized I love this feeling in games like Terraria and Don't Starve Together, too. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly draws me to it.

I love venturing into the unknown, discovering strange places, gathering resources, uncovering lost civilizations or bits of lore, and wondering what's around the next corner. I also love the early game in Civ 6, when the world is still unexplored. Bonus points if base-building is involved.

Any games that scratch that same itch?

Open-ended What video game do you think has the best 1 up system?

For example Mario and Kirby 1 ups are pretty pointless because the games are easy and 1 ups are abundant. But a game like mega man 1 ups actually feel valuable

Open-ended What kind of content do you like/want to see in a game review?

I've been thinking about starting a game review/discussion blog (or youtube, unsure) to talk about games I really like and give thorough reviews and wanted to ask other gamers what kinds of content they'd find helpful in a review.

I.e. cost, art style, thoughts on specific areas or aspects of a game, play time, personal enjoyment

Open-ended Ps5 or xbox series X for my situation

Im thinking of buying one of these two consoles the next time I find a good deal.Im currently at uni so I wouldnt be playing throughout the year, mainly during breaks between semesters. So my original thought was to just get a ps5 and pay for plus for that month or 2 that I use it.

Then with the uproar of ps5s new digital only rules and with the positive outlook towards Xboxs new ceo I thought of getting the series X.

But then again I am a uni student on a limited budget so with the recent hate that ps5 has been getting theres been a lot of development towards jbs,so then I said ill use ps plus until the version that I buy gets caught up to with the latest jb.

I dont care too much for online capabilities.or any exclusives on either consoles

Ive enjoyed playing AC,MK,Black ops zombies(1,2 and 3),ghost of tsushima, darksiders

Any suggestions on what to consider to make up my mind?

I have not considered older consoles, but I did own a xbox 360 for like 10 years

Gift recommendations for gamer

What gift recommendations would you suggest for someone who’s into gaming?

I’m planning Christmas/birthday presents and when you google ‘gifts for gamers’ it comes up with personalised things or neon signs that I don’t think he’ll like, but I also don’t know enough about gaming to know different options!

He likes horror games and also first person/shooter ones (more Seige/Tarkov/Rust rather than COD). He has both PS & PC but prefers PC, he’s also into streaming/making videos of what he plays

I preferably want to avoid Steam vouchers but don’t really know of any specific upcoming/existing games - does anyone have any recommendations that could help!?

I haven't played a game since 1997. What game should I try now?

I'm currently at risk of hitting 3 decades without any gaming. The last games I played were Duke Nukem and Quake in the spring of 1997. That's what my friends in college were playing so we played together, mostly

Before that, I played Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Brothers, and The Legend of Zelda. My family had a Nintendo and a Sega Genesis but could barely afford any games for them

I also played arcade games when I was a young kid in the 80s

I am really geeky, but I've had other hobbies that have taken up my time and (negligable) money. Maybe that was a mistake. Maybe I should have been a gamer

I think I need to try it. I want to make a vast 30 year leap into the present

Recommend some games that would completely blow my mind as someone whose last game was in the mid 90s

ETA: The games I mentioned were just what I had access to, not games I chose. I did enjoy them, but I'm not sure if they're what I would have chosen if I had had options

Open-ended Which console is right for me?

Hi!

I’m looking for some advice on what console to get. I don’t have the space for a PC really, and I’d much rather have something handheld so I can play whenever. I’ve only ever used a Switch before (and an xbox 360 when I was a kid)  and I’m only really a pretty casual gamer. I play a lot of Fortnite, and I like Overwatch, Zelda, Pokémon, Hades, Disco Elysium, etc, so a bit of a mix. I got really into Resident Evil recently after playing through the OG games, and I really want to play the newer ones (RE2R, RE4R, RE9 and the Code Veronica remake when it comes out), as well as others like Elden Ring, Cyberpunk, No Man’s Sky, etc.

I know the graphics for some of those are probably going to be kind of rough on the Switch 2, but I don’t mind too much. I played all the Arkham games on the Switch 1 which obviously didn’t run perfectly, but it didn’t really bother me while playing.

I was looking at the Steam Deck a little while ago, but I took too long making my mind up so now the price has gone up a ton and it’s a bit out of my budget (probably looking to spend £450-£500 at an absolute max). I’m leaning towards the Switch 2 now, but I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions first? Thanks!

Open-ended What's your top imprinted game situation feeling

I don't know how to best explain that but you know when there's that thing where you f.e. have a certain smell that reminds you of something from your childhood. And take that but in-game. What's the game and scene that has the most feeling imprinted into your brain from the past. For me f.e. it's Sacred specifically starting the game as a wood elf in the story because that's how I first ever played the game. If I see that area in the game, together with the music and dialogue I feel teleported back to my childhood so strongly like probably no other game.

Open-ended I made gaming streetwear that isn't nerdy. Does that appeal to you?

There's many different preferences on the aesthetic of gaming apparel, some people have absolutely no problem wearing something blatently nerdy or geeky and some people would never be caught dead wearing it. Some prefer just a small logo or reference to a game they like and some don't mind a big design as long as it doesn't look tacky.

So we thought that moving in the direction of a brutalist and grungy art style would be the best direction to step away from a "childish" aesthetic.

We want to make gaming apparel that to anyone would just look like a sick tee/hoodie, but only a gamer would get the reference in the design so anyone could feel comfortable to wear it without self-censoring. This space is also flooded with low quality garments and prints so (even though its more expensive) we went with mid-heavyweight (230gsm tees and 500gsm hoodies) two stage construction garments is so the wearer has something they can wear anywhere and feel put together.

A lot of people also don't like feeling like a walking billboard so the references are gamer culture focused, not specific titles or IP references.

I'm not going to put the website or photos in here to do my best to adhere to self promotion guidelines. Genuinely just want feedback and your thoughts on what i'm creating. All are appreciated!

Open-ended What’s y’all’s download speed?

Just wondering. I hear so many people talk about bad download speeds and the only idea I’d imagine why is limited download speed on your storage device or slow ish wifi.

42 inch OLED or 77 inch OLED?

So I already have both of these TVs, one is in my home theater, and One is in my office which I use for PC gaming. I just picked up a PS five and I’m wondering if I should play on the big TV or on my 42 inch OLED.

My first impression of playing on the larger screen as it doesn’t feel as intimate or as immersive of a gaming experience.

I’m sitting about 8 feet away from the 77 inch, and when I am in my office I’m about 3 feet away I would say.

I’m just kind of curious what people thoughts on this and if they were in a similar situation what they ended up settling on.

Open-ended Evolution game

Hey gamers. I’m looking for a game that I remember as a boy (probs 10ish years ago).

It was about evolution — it was NOT Spore, I know about Spore and it is not what I’m looking for. You played as god or something and you can alter the terrain, water, and there was progression of time and as it goes on, the animals evolve, and some die out because the world has changed. It was freaking awesome; I never actually played it but watched a YouTuber, not even sure who because I cannot find it in my first ideas.

The perspective was like top down, and the world you play with is relatively small and I think it was a square. You can create mountains and it’s colder the higher the altitude. I’m sorry I don’t have concrete hints to what it could be.

Might’ve been turn-based and I think there was like an assistant who gives you tips.

Open-ended Which is the best console?

I was given a choice between the Xbox Series S or X, a Nintendo Switch 2, or the PS5 Slim. Honestly, I don't know much about consoles; could you help me choose the best one if I want a solid, smooth experience?

X-Box or PlayStation

Hi, up until now I’ve only really played on the Nintendo Switch or occasionally on PC, but I’m thinking about getting an Xbox or PlayStation as well. I’m a bit overwhelmed trying to decide which would be best. I don’t need the absolute latest model, but it should be capable of running newer games. Can anyone help me decide?
Thanks already.
