You asked for it.
We heard you.
We delivered!
In our last news update we touched lightly on how much your words of encouragement mean to us. The sub has grown tremendously in the past year and we couldn’t be happier to see you all giving constructive feedback to one another.
We’ve also heard the people who have enjoyed our moderation style, but wanted something more lighthearted and discussion-focused. We’re also well aware that there’s a lack of subreddits where people are allowed to self-promote and advertise.
That being said, I’m happy to introduce our two new subs!
r/ArtistNook is a casual, cozy, discussion-focused sub moderated by leighabbr and myself. While r/ArtCrit has strict rules on posts, r/ArtistNook is much more laid back.
You can share information, talk about your artwork or OCs, post your work with links to your social media, and even ask for pricing help if you share the required information so people can actually help you with your prices.
This sub has been up for about two weeks, so there’s some light activity already.
We can’t wait to see you there!
r/ArtStore is an active, large sub focused on connecting artists and buyers. You can self-promote, sell your prints, advertise your commissions, shops, and handmade goods. We do not allow drop shippers or mass-produced goods of any kind.
With the holiday season approaching, this may be just the sub you need to get eyes on your work!
Leighabbr and I are so honored to be leading these communities. We’re still fine tuning them both and, like when we took charge in r/ArtCrit, we’re open to ideas and feedback.
Thank you all for your continued support! We honestly couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

Moving away from values and contrast, we’re moving into the next important part of your work – composition!
Composition is the way an artist arranges the pieces of their image to help guide the viewer’s eyes where they want it to go. A strong composition can be used to create a specific mood, tell a story, create balance, and direct attention to important areas of the piece.
For those commenting, think about where your eye goes first when you look at the image. Does it feel balanced or does the image seem to “lean” to one side? Are there any distracting areas or does anything feel crowded or awkward?
Let’s work together to create stronger pieces with composition!
Please note that all general sub rules apply (no AI, no fishing for compliments, no giving personal info, etc). Only our post requirements are different here.
- Pieces must;
a) Be no more than 6 months old and/or
b) Must still be being worked on and/or
c) Must have the intention of being recreated.
- Works must follow our NSFW rules.
- Since no context is required in these posts, draw and paint-overs are automatically expected. If you don’t want these, say so.
Only critique the piece regarding the topic of the week. If the artist would like additional critique, they can make a post in the main sub. Critiques are still expected to be constructive and polite.

No reference. Someone responded to a post about my portfolio saying that I over render my artwork.. Is this true? I am inspired by the rending style of splash art and my own creative twist. Please let me know how I can improve!!!

I’d like to hear how you’d critique it against the actual exam brief and scoring rubric.
The task: “Travelers” sketch
Scoring rubric (40 points total, 10 per criterion)
What I’d love feedback on:

I put down my base colors some shadows and the lighting but I don’t really know how I can further add to it to increase the contrast and get better rendering I did alter things from the reference like the sword placement and the head placement so the lighting isn’t exactly the same but I feel that the piece still feels flat no matter what I do

Yesterday I posted a painting that was somewhat of a triptych/comic book. Today I did a quick sketch of the same concept but with a different take. Same as the last one I used zero reference and took a different approach with the figure.
I am looking for critique on the compositional layout as well as visual hierarchy.
Also this piece is about human relationship with Ai. I am going for a jarring/surreal approach with bizarre figures and somewhat sterile landscapes.

Generally looking for anatomy and perspective tips on the first drawing, i did not use a reference except for my older art (which i am not sure if i had used a reference for). The other two are other examples of what i can do, please mention anything else that sticks out, thank you!

I’m back, and I drew this, this morning. (Yes, “this, this” because this is English, and English totally makes cognitive sense)
I took some advice from yall and started to work on it again first photo is the eye under a light, second is under sunlight (the little glare at the bottom is from the sunlight not design). This time, I worked from what I remembered from trial and error from the other and used that third reference photo for highlights inspiration which promptly turned into what you see now. I made the pupil smaller, iris rounder(it started out as a perfect circle but then it got a little wonky while coloring in. I used two pencils to create my own compass type thing. Worked out well after a few tries.)
Where might I go from here? New colors? More details? If so, what details? Grant it, I only have a certain array of colors to work from. The colored pencils I have are pretty basic. By crayola. I’ve had them for many years.

The only reference here was just, the canonical underframe for these mech suits. Everything else was freehand.

The second image is where I realized I needed to study, the third is the study. I apologize if the stylization gets in the way.
My drawings are from oldest to newest. How have I improved, and where can I improve more?

So this is half of my painting thus far. It’s oil on canvas. What do you think of it? i’m planning on leaving more and more of the red to bleed through as I paint the foreground because it’s so bright. Idk does it fall flat to you? like not impressionistic enough or not realistic enough. Too much detail or not enough? Do you think there’s life to it?
I know a lot of people love negative space but that wasn’t my original goal with this so the huge bright red chunk will not be there as it progresses.
Also i’m painting this to hang in my house, not to give to someone or sell it. I like to paint things for my house that I think are pretty. The original video reminds me of my childhood. The reference photo is a screenshot from Mateusz Kalafut’s instagram video of his beautiful garden. This won’t be used for anything commercial. i’m asking for opinions because most people are more cerebral when it comes to art than I am, the different ideas help me get out of my own head. I’m trying to develop my painting ability but still just painting whatever speaks to me lol. At some point i’ll have to paint lemons or something and actually get better but until then this is what im doing .
Also if you’ve seen this post on another r/ i’m sorry I wasn’t sure where would be the best spot to post.
thanks :)

I only used references of my own OCs, and I briefly looked at pictures of lantern festivals to get an idea of what they're like. The goldfish on the left was designed on the spot, inspired by floral japanese kimonos.

I’m working on a 4x6 sticker sheet! The original theme was dark fantasy, but now I’m just going for a more gothic/ritualistic/religious vibe I think??
I’m still rendering a few things like the heart (potion maybe?) and pomegranate, but any feedback on the layout, elements, and overall cohesiveness so far would be much appreciated :)
(I used a combo of a few different references and can post them in the comments if needed, but I didn’t heavily reference a single image in particular)

Still not PERFECT, but it’s time to step away for a day or two.

hello! I'm doing a class in tone and here is some of my work so far, and the set ups that we were given as references.
I'm really shaky with still life, and all that comes with it (perspective, composition, accuracy) and that first bit is my weakness among others, but I think learning tone is giving me a bit more practice.
I'd love to learn more, but how do I become more accurate with my drawings?

(Yess I know about the extra ring and that it’s not a perfect circle)
First time doing a realistic eye. I’ve done an eye one other time, but I had pink involved and it was more of a, “I shade in this color then that color and call it an eye” than an eye, eye. The second photos are the references. Also I’m pretty sure that third photo is AI but I still added it because the darker shading at the top gave me an idea to add that.
Just looking for critique on how one would improve from here. Obviously it’s not super good but it’s the best I got right now. Also funny enough, the highlights started to build themselves, so I leaned into it and that ended up working out pretty well.
I probably should clarify, I’m not planing to push into art or anything. If it develops naturally, it develops naturally. I was just wondering what all I missed. And my experience with trying to truly make art, is near zilch. So..??
(Better photo in the comments, in the replies of a half face art piece)

This piece is my outlook on AI, simply as an introspective study. What if “we” as in billionaires did achieve this “enlightenment” that allowed them to create a “perfect” world. I used no reference for this. It is being completed with oil paint and it is on canvas.
In the foreground the viewer is place looking out through a window into the perfect world. There are human batteries on conveyor belts and then being led to this gear device (still working this out). To the left along the border there are openings in which these human batteries are coming out. Leading to the top left which has a human like face that is being bent like pipe work. This large red pipe I want to be a recurring theme throughout my series.
The mid ground is a woman being created by this AI “underworld” piece of machinery on the middle window area. I’m trying to insinuate that she is about to walk out the door. There is a cave behind the woman. Above towards the top I want another perspective leading off back into the underworld.
In the right window, there is an outside landscape that I am still working out.
Thanks!

No reference was used.
For context, the two characters are supposed to be having an argument and the figure on the right is supposed to be crossing his arms
My main problem is how flat and stiff things look.
I think something is off about the anatomy and posing but I can't pinpoint what. Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance

I’m working on a tinyyy canvas for a group show and was really excited about my concept. Trouble is I don’t normally work on canvas 😅 this does not use a reference.
I use gouache and would typically do some shading with layers of color but I’m kind of stuck and don’t know how to make it more interesting.
The work in progress (second photo) looked more interesting to me 😅 I kind of wish I’d stuck to the monochromatic theme and used a few different layers of magenta (the base color).
I painted this using acrylic gouache (sooo acrylic).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😅

I'm not satisfied with the end results, but don't know how to fix it, especially the last one, I don't like how the shadows and the light in the shadows look, I want to give the clothes a semi realistic style and make jt look painted
reference is included

This is a scene in an animation I’m making and I have this fridge that I’m trying to have match (or at least inspired by) the spiderverse artstyle, but I feel like it falls flat. To me it looks boring and 2D. It’s not complete, but what do you think?
Don’t really have a reference, but I’m trying to make it seem like light is coming from a window and shining on the refrigerator.
Made on ibisPaint

I am aware the line art as is could use some work, which I'll refine more later, but how would I make this color palette be similar to a "two/three pallette"? The best one I can think of is the MC ui from Persona 3 Reload. Here's the reference for him on slide 2
