Help Request Mantle collapse???

This is my rescue girl, Rory. I rescued her from terrible conditions and have been nursing her back to health. She’s gotten quite active and enjoys her time with her much smaller snail sister.

But today I was watching her forage for crumbs on the ground and noticed she looked like she was hanging very low. I am very worried. Is this mantle collapse?

Photo Planaria took my 8 month old rabbit snail from me and I’m gutted Spoiler

She was the first born of four. The third born had some kind of failure-to-thrive situation and passed a few months ago, at about 4 months old.

I’m currently battling to keep the mother snail alive and happy, as she’s been low energy/skittish for a bit now and just a few days ago I watched two planaria crawl out of her shell. She’s alive but rarely comes out fully. I have her quarantined in a hospital tank with her other two babies, who are doing just fine and very active. I’m just heartbroken.

When she had her first baby and I found that baby in the tank, it was genuinely the best thing I’ve experienced in the hobby so far. I told all of my kids at school about it, staff too. I’m known as the aquarium person. And now she’s gone.

I’ll be keeping her shell, she was just about 3/4 inches long. I didn’t know losing a snail would break my heart so much, I just happened to find her in a reflection in the tank a bit ago after not seeing her for about a day.

This sucks and I hate my tank, I want to break the whole thing down and start over but I’m trying to be rational. I have a lot of shrimp in there too who are also at risk of being killed by the flatworms, lost one today and watched a worm crawl out when I took the body out of the tank. I’ve dosed with PraziPro but now that I’ve moved my girls out of the tank I’ll go the fenbendazole route after waiting a day and doing a water change. Fuck man.

Help Request Why do some of my bladder snails have a different shaped shell?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Most of my bladder snails have oblong, smoothly spiraling shells. Then some, like on the right, have much more compact spirals. (I know its not age, because I have over a dozen new babies that look like the left)

ID Request Pond snail or bladder snail?

Found this guy in our tank. I'm leaning towards it being a pond snail cause of the triangular antenna parts. But id like to confirm on what it is. Ice had bladder snails in the past and this guy doesn't really look like they do. However he also doesn't have the pointy bit at the end of the shell.

Help Request What do I need to get for a mystery snail?

So, my teacher has this tank of snails, and they keep breeding, so she has no where to put them, and I said once I learn more about them maybe I could take a few. She said they were mystery snails, which I thought meant that she didn’t know what kind of snails they are. My friend told me they’re a breed of snail, though. I googled it, and they’re dark foot mystery snails, some have dark brown shells and some have purple shells. Here are my questions about them, any answers/ advice/ or help would be really appreciated

  1. The snails that are in the tank are all different sizes. There are some as small as a nickel, and some as big or a bit bigger then a quarter. Are the smaller ones babies? Or do they just come in all sizes

  2. If the little ones are babies, do they need any special things?

  3. I am planning to go out and get a tank tomorrow, and I think an article I read said they need at least 3 gallons of water- is that ok? Or should I try to get a bigger tank

  4. How can I check their gender without taking them out of the water?

  5. How long can they be out of the water?

  6. Are there any specific food brands I should be getting them? What do they eat besides algae? (Asking this because I don’t have any fish, and so I assume there won’t be as much algae) ((please recommend a brand that I can get online or at a pet store like Petco))

  7. Do I need a filter? My teacher has a big tank with no filter, and those snails seem to be doing fine… I haven’t seen or heard of any of them dying, and she’s had them for a few years

  8. How can I test the ph of the water? And is tap water ok for the tank?

  9. What should be in the tank? I read that there should be sand at the bottom, but is there a specific sort of sand? Do I need plants? And if so, should they be real plants or can they be fake?

I know these questions may seem kinda silly, but I haven’t had pets before, so I’m a bit clueless. I also wanted to know what people who actually have snails thought I should do.
Thanks for reading, I am going to try my best to do what you guys say is best to care for them!

At this point I'm pretty confident I ID'ed them correctly myself, but I just want to confirm. Got a bunch of tiny babies by accident with some plants, not a snail the store actually sells.

Help Request Mystery Snail Ate My Anubias Plants

I have a yellow/gold mystery snail that I got from Petco. I've had him for a couple months and he has grown quite a bit (so he must be getting nutrients). I have a wide variety of foods that I've bought for him and his fishy tank mates, but I'm not sure what he likes to eat besides my plants. According to what I've read online, mystery snails supposedly only eat dying plants but that was not the case with these. I'm pretty confident that he is a mystery snail and not the apple snail that IS known to eat plants.

He has "mowed" over the Java Moss, which I'm not concerned about. The moss seems okay, just was given a haircut. But it was upsetting that he had eaten all the leaves from my Anubias plants. (I even saw him pooping undigested bright green bits of leaves later on.) I did see him on the Java Fern before, but he left that plant alone after that.

Now I did just make a batch of Snello for the first time the other day. That did seem to be a hit. So hopefully that will help. I'm probably going to give up on Anubias plants and use more Java Fern in their place since he didn't seem to care for that. I was wondering if anyone has had this issue with their mystery snail and if there are certain other plants that they seemed to like eating or not eating as well. I would like to get some Corkscrew Vallisneria for the back of the tank, but would hate for them to become snail food.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Found this snail, about an inch or so long, during the breakdown of an old aquarium (moving snails and plants over to a bigger tank).

Who is this? Is this a Malaysian trumpet snail?

Help Request Is my horned nerrite dead? Doesn't move in a day, never does this before. But doesnt smell.

Post image

Its been in my aquarium for like 6 or 7 months and usually sleep stuck in the glass. Yesterday I saw it in the bottom upside down so I turn it, usually when it does that it move again right away after I fixed the position.

Its been 1 day now. I try to pull it out the water but it doesnt smell so I put it back to see the bottom and its like that. Is it dead? Or just hibernating?

He got fluffy hair like algae around its shell by the way. Been like that for quite some time.

Help Request Safety Protocols in Gathering Wild Caught Snails?

• Upvotes

We own some land near a river, and small-scale harvesting of snails don't need a permit. Schistosomiasis is not active in the region. I'm considering collecting a few for personal use since local varieties are rarely sold. Does anyone have an idea or experience on responsibly transitioning WC snails into captivity?

Help Request When to reintroduce snails after Panacur

When can I reintroduce mystery snails and nerite snails to my tank after treating the tank with panacur (for planaria)? It was treated in April (6 months ago) and I’ve done 5 water changes since then.

How does my snail look like to you guys? I’m fairly new with snails so not sure if there’s anything I could be doing for him any food recommendations also, he doesn’t seem to like my algae wafers. I do have cuttlebone but I’m not sure if he needs it right now.

Help Request Do nerite snails need lids?

I have an established 40 gallon and am looking for some algae eaters, but I have plants hanging on the rim and prefer the rimless aesthetic. I know that lids are recommended, but are they a requirement? Will nerites truly stray that far from the waterline? I’d love to keep maybe 2 or 3 of them in that tank, but I don’t want to risk them getting hurt if they’re extremely likely to crawl out!
