Hey all,
I've been working on an MCP server that connects AI agents (Claude, Codex, etc.) to the Age of Mythology: Retold scenario editor. You describe what you want, and the agent places units, paints terrain, and edits triggers in the live editor.
**What it can do**
- Place units and buildings, including formations (rows and rings)
- Paint terrain, water, forests, and cliffs, and adjust elevation
- Inspect and edit triggers, players, and diplomacy
- Look up game data: 1,757 prototypes, 896 techs, 161 god powers, and 93 gods across all seven pantheons
- Take screenshots so the agent can check its own work
- Save checkpoints (never overwrites an existing file)
**Custom scenario**
As a test, I made an alternative scenario for mission 10 of the Obsidian Mirror campaign. In this version you are betrayed by your only ally. if you play this scenario on Titan or Ludicrous, you get the option to pick a bonus difficulty level, up to 5 times.
You can find it here: https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/551120/
Let me know what you think!
**Mcp server setup**
Windows x64 and Node.js 20+. Add this to your MCP client config:
{
"mcpServers": {
"aom-editor": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "aom-retold-editor-mcp"]
}
}
}
Then open the scenario editor and start prompting. It starts with 72 core tools, and the agent can switch to the full set of 922 when it needs more.
**Caveats**
- This is beta software. It can fail or crash the game, so save often.
- It only works on supported game builds (tested on 100.19.17020.0) and refuses to make changes on unknown ones, so a game patch may break it until I update.
- Offline scenario editor only. Don't use it in multiplayer.
- It doesn't patch the executable or attach a debugger. It uses the editor's own command dispatcher.
- It was largely vibe-coded, so expect rough edges.
- Unofficial community project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft.

If something breaks, or your agent keeps falling back to clicking around with screenshots, please open an issue. That usually means a tool is missing, and I'd like to know which one. Thanks to CryShana for CryBar, which the optional game-data catalogs rely on.
