Got this 2000 4Runner SR5 4x4, hood scoop with rear locker with a clean title for $3,700 with 218k miles on it. Needs some love like coils, struts and top hats, lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends, valve cover gaskets, top end cleaning, radiator replacement and gonna go through all the fluids drain and replace. Has some ripped bottom seats in the front and some dents and dings, clear coat peel and paint faded on hood and roof but was in Arizona up till 2018 now in the PNW. Almost no rust underneath. Runs and shifts smooth. I feel like this was a pretty good deal right?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Evap and Misfire code diagnosis help

Post image
4 Upvotes

Ive been chasing down this set of codes for a little while and cant seem to get rid of them. I replaced all the VSVs with no luck. I smoke tested the Evap system and couldn’t find a leak. What else could be causing this set of codes? They seem to always come together with the misfire code. P0440, P0446, P0300 have been most common but P0441 has shown up as well. Recently started getting P0420 as well.

🧠 General As long as I'm religious about changing oil every 3k miles, does it really matter what brand or type of oil i use?

• Upvotes

Bought my dad's 2000 4runner earlier this year. Had about 99k miles when I got it, around 102k miles when I took it for its first oil change since I got it. My dad said he had only been using conventional oil in past so stuck with the same. Got some quaker state 5w-30 and changed the oil. I've never had a vehicle come even remotely close to 100k miles. But I've always been diligent on oil changes.I should be ok sticking to conventional moving forward?

ā“Advice / Recomendations I’m buying my first 4Runner on Saturday. It’s a 1997 limited 4wd in great, I shape need some advice though

it’s pretty much mint just 2 small issues, the power steering pump whines and the back hatch latch needs replaced. It already has a 3ā€ lift, front end has been redone recently and it has extended travel CV axles. The maintenance is up to date and the timing belt and water pump have been replaced every 100,000 miles I’m paying $6,500 it’s got nice wheels and tires on it. I plan to make it into an overland rig but I need advice on the best places to buy parts and what mods I should do to make it trail ready. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I have a 2012 Corolla S 218k miles and I’m considering trading it for a 2001 4Runner Limited 260k miles. 4Runner is rust free , and I know the owner, who says it’s been reliable for 3 years. Asking for $6000
I want a 4WD vehicle to keep long term. Would you make this trade or keep the Corolla?

Only sounds like this once it warms up, cold it sounds normal, also seems to idle a bit rough warm or cold almost feels like a misfire and I haven’t gotten misfire codes, only occasionally like maybe once a month I’ll get po136 for downstream o2

🧠 General Mitch here....

Post image

Not really, but I understand Mitch. Have cash, will travel. In the last 2 weeks I've missed out on a '01 Limited 4x4 with 160k miles for $5800, made arrangements to meet the guy the next day and he sold it before I could get there. I figured that would happen, it was an amazing deal. Messaged another 4-5 different people asking completely logical questions, got left on read, hadn't even made it to the lowball stage yet. Got a response from one guy about a week ago, he's ~6 hours away, so figured if it was still around I'd follow up when I had some free time to get away. Hit him up with a few more completely reasonable questions to see if we could make arrangements in the next couple days, got called a tire kicker, wouldn't answer my questions or get the pics I was asking for, so I guess bullet dodged there.

I spotted a Limited on Kings in the neighborhood the other day, I may pass by and try the Mitch Method and see how that goes.

I know the right one will come eventually, but sheesh it's tough out here.

ā“Advice / Recomendations Are LBJs noticeable early?

I bought some new LBJ's for my 99 sr5 thinking they were squeaking but turns out it was my door and seatbelt (silicone lube and white lithium solved it) but I keep seeing so many people saying to do them so I'm curious.

Do they make any noise or have any noticeable issue when they're starting to go? My 4runner does seem to float on the highway, if I turn the wheel and after straightening the wheel straight it'll pull a bit to the side I last turned, but I just chocked it up to bad bushings I should replace, but after doing a bit of googling, apparently that can point to failing LBJ's, the previous owner did have the drivers side fail and I'm not sure if the passenger side was replaced, so I'm debating just doing them regardless soon but in the future I want to make sure I'm prepared and have some way to identify it in the future.

I do wheel it almost every weekend and have yet to notice any noises even when at full turn over dips and bumps, but the last thing I want is a failure on a trail where I may not see anyone for hours or days, and is there a way to make sure I'm prepared if that happens? Will baling wire or a dozen zipties get me back onto a main road if I'm able to get the front end back up? And what is generally the failure point? The bolts, castle nut or the joint itself?

Thanks in advance! šŸ’Ŗ

1998 4Runner, 158k miles, selling for $3,500. It has no problems, new brakes, good tires, new battery, timing belt not due. California car. Yes it is RWD but I’m not off-roading. This would be a second car for me, don’t really need it except would be nice to have for trips and hauling lumber and it just looks awesome.
Any advice recommended for a novice old car buyer with no DIY experience. But want to learn

ā“Advice / Recomendations Thinking of selling

My 02 has sat for a year. Had issues when it went into the garage and things may be happening soon to where it needs to leave our possession. When it parked it sounded like the rear differential was grinding, definitely had a leaking rear main seal, but that was it. It’s had a long history and was a fantastic vehicle but unfortunately we’ve out grown it as a family and we have three other Toyotas.

I do love the thing and I’d love to fix it but I’m not even sure where to begin with it at this point, and doing a rear main seal in my garage isn’t something I’d really like to attempt. It was stolen from us when we first got it and recovered within a day, got it back with the exact amount of gas that it had when they took it from us and over 800 miles extra on the clock. Only thing that didn’t work once it was recovered was the sunroof for what ever reason.

After doing a deep dive into the VIN I found out it has a milage roll back in its lifetime and actually has about 80k more on it than what shows on the dash, so it’s well into the 340k range at this point. I don’t know what to do for it and I don’t even know what the value of it is. Obviously running would be much more. It isn’t a 4X4 either. However the frame on it is pristine and the interior is in ok shape for being 24 years old.

Is there even a market for a 4Runner like mine? If so what the hell do I begin to ask in terms of pricing?
