Hi r/toronto! I’m David Cottrell, and I’m running for City Councillor in Ward 12, St. Paul’s.
My background spans federal politics, recruitment, consulting and running mid-size businesses. I’m campaigning on affordability, reliable transit, safer public spaces and representation that listens, responds and follows through.
Ask me about my proposals, my experience, why I’m running or what you think Toronto needs to do better. You don’t have to live in St. Paul’s to join the conversation, and tough questions are welcome.
Ill try to stay on for as long as feasible, if I do miss some questions then feel free to reach out to me or ask here and I will try to respond over the next few days. There will also be a debate coming up on the 20th, I will be posting that on my socials.
We're trying something new for the r/Toronto community - Every Wednesday we'll be putting up one of these discussion threads where we can just chat with less structure than normally, so we can go off topic. Rules about civility and stuff still apply of course.
This is a trial run so if at the end of our trial it doesn't feel like its working out for the community we can get rid of it or adjust to make it better. But that is where you come in! We want your feedback and thoughts. Let us know if you have any ideas, either in the comments here or send us a modmail.
Got any plans for the weekend?
How about this weather we're having?
Candice (p2) was arrested by TPS at around 8 pm near Gardenvale Rd / Bloor St, causing a large police force presence at the intersection and protester standoff.
It’s always grey, dirty and dark whenever I walk through it and I can’t help but think for such a world class city we could make it look a little nicer… are there any improvements planned for this tunnel as a part of the Union station works?
@ Dundas and Kipling. I was running to work (the jobsite) this morning before sunrise. Thought I heard something drop on the pavement didn't think much of it figured it was coming from the construction. Come coffee break I couldn't find my car KEY!! Retraced all my steps and stuck my nose down like a bloodhound no luck I thought it dropped in the drains.
On my 4th attempt to find my car key/fob I looked up in despair and there she was!!
To the THOUGHTFUL SAMARITAN YOU ARE MY HERO!! Wishing you plenty of good karma with God's grace and blessings!! Theres a box of treats waiting for you at the bakery beside the Shoppers drugmart on Friday Oct 16.
What a great fucking time in a great neighbourhood. Randomly posting this because I had this dream last night where I was drinking at Las Iguanas (I haven't had a drink in 2 decades) and I woke up remembering how fun Las Iguanas and The Tap were. And how you could go back and forth between the two bars via the back doors.
And the Green Room. Such an off the grid place. That wild patio surrounded by patios. Always wondered what it was like to live there.
Insomnia, Kilgour's, JJ Muggs, By The Way Cafe, Futures, that wild Hungarian place with the checked tablecoths and massive schnitzels.
Sigh. I get that I'm old and remembering the halcyon days and shit, but it was better before everything went digital and venture capitalist.
Any other peeps remember stores/things/people from back then? The strip between Spadina and Bathurst on Bloor.
Hey everyone. I'm sure many people have experienced the terrible intersection of Eglinton and Allen. I drive and walk through this intersection on a daily basis, and I wanted to focus on optimizing the car throughput because the existing traffic light cycle sucks. I mostly come from the west going eastbound, trying to turn left onto Allen. The current problem I see is that the Allen N left turn light only turns green when the eastbound light at Allen S turns red. This makes it so that only ~100m worth of eastbound cars can get onto Allen in one cycle.
I remember that this wasn't a problem about a year ago, so I tried to recreate that optimized cycle to the best of my ability. Explaining traffic light cycles is really hard so I made a video showing one 120-second cycle of what I'm trying to propose. I used an old map as the background, it's from when I used to get emails about construction in the area.
If anyone has any feedback about the cycle or who I should send this to to get implemented, please let me know!
Currently at a large protest on Bloor St West, in the Islington area. Not sure of the turnout, but it’s in the hundreds and has grown a lot within the past hour.
The Ford government has said they plan to start removing the bike lanes as of 8pm this evening. There are currently construction vehicles parked on Green Lanes, south of Bloor. Come out and occupy the lanes, and tell Doug Ford what you think.
What do you think about when you think of Toronto or Retro Toronto? Or what are some of your legendary people or place in Toronto.
For me it’s things like.
- Sam the Record Man
- Cash for Gold Guy.
- Yonge and Dundas
- Skydome
- Nathan Phillips Square
- the Believe! Guy
- the car coming out of the much music building
- the raccoon memorial
- sneaky dees
- el mocambo
- Ontario place
- Trinity Bellwoods
If you were affected, please take the following steps:
1) Call Toronto Police non-emergency number to report your damage and debris purposely thrown in the the bike lane. 416-808-2222. You can also report online. Obtain a report number.
2) Email your councillor and the mayor's office with the report number and respectfully follow-up with them to ensure that the matter is being investigated.
The more people report this the better chance that the City and police will take action.
