Survey Request: Current International Students

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello! I am currently completing my dissertation on international student mental health, acculturative stress, and personality. My survey is confidential and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. If you are 18 years old or older, are currently enrolled as an International student at a US university, are proficient in English, and have resided in the US for at least 3 months, it would mean a lot to me if you could complete my survey.

If you know anybody who meets this inclusion criteria, please share this survey with them. Upon completion of the survey, participants have the opportunity to enter a raffle for 1 of 5 $25 giftcards. Thank you!

Selling two Yale vs Harvard tickets!

Hi! I originally bought tickets for a a friend and I, but we ended up wanting to join some other friends that bought in another section... The tickets are for Sec G20 Row 18 Seat 6-7 and I'll be selling them face value ($169 each but willing to negotiate a bit). Please DM me if you're interested and I can also send proof if that's a concern!

(Also please let me know if this is against the subreddit rules and I'll take it down, I just didn't know where else to post this lol)

i feel like a chud

Hey all, I’m a first year and already have so many regrets. I applied for a few clubs but either didn’t get into them or am no longer interested. As a result I am part of literally one non-competitive thing that I don’t enjoy all that much. I’m interested in the humanities and arts, outdoors, museums, journals, politics, and cultural groups. Or really anything that’s still open…Does anyone know of any clubs that are still accepting applications or with initiation in progress? Or how spring applications tend to work? I would definitely be interested in rushing improv again (only auditioned for two groups and didn’t realize how much I enjoyed it), joining YDN or Record similar publications, or any of the above things I mentioned. Also do more student jobs open up come spring? I just feel like I didn’t take advantage of all the opportunities and got overwhelmed and ended up doing nothing. I feel really behind. Sorry for the rambling. Any advice is appreciated

Survey request: disabled or chronically ill current or recent higher education students, undergrad or graduate!

Post image
0 Upvotes

My name is Clara Mey and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware. I am conducting a research study about disabled students’ experiences with disability accommodation processes in higher education for my dissertation. As a disabled graduate student, this topic is particularly important to me!

Please see the flyer linked here: Disability and Higher Ed Research Flyer

Yale University was randomly selected as part of my analysis for my dissertation, and I wanted to make sure that students at the randomly selected universities/colleges had the opportunity to participate in my research!

In order to participate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have attended college or graduate school in the US within the last five years
  • Self-identify as disabled or having a chronic health or mental health condition

You do not need a formal diagnosis, and you can participate whether or not you registered or applied for accommodations!

If you agree, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey taking about 20 minutes. You may also choose to enter into a drawing for one of five $20 gift cards at the end of the survey. If you choose to enter, your email will not be associated with your survey responses.

If you would be interested in participating in this study or would like to learn more, please click the link here: Disability and Higher Education Survey. And if you know people who might be interested, feel free to share this information!

If you have any questions, please contact me at [csmey@udel.edu](mailto:csmey@udel.edu) or my advisor, Dr. Eric Rise, at [erise@udel.edu](mailto:erise@udel.edu). Or feel free to comment or message me here!

Thank you!

Background Check Question

Hi everyone! I know I’ve been asking a lot of questions in here recently, but getting hired at Yale is definitely a process. I am required to complete a background check as a new employee. On my resume and app I listed unpaid internships which cannot be verified via payroll (this is my first full time job). I’m worried about not passing the background check because of this. Additionally, one of my internships was seasonal (three summers), and I listed on my resumé that it was summers only and in the job description during the app, but I’m worried it will be flagged. Does anyone have some insight on this?

Edit: I met the initial qualifications through the education requirement, but I’m not sure if this makes a difference.

chem 1750 or chem 2210??

hi! i’m a freshman currently in chem 1740, freshman orgo. i was just skimming through my schedule next year and realized how terrible the reviews for chem 1750 were (esp w the specific prof, david spiegel, who’s also teaching 1750 in spring 2027).

i’m now debating if i should take chem 1750 (taught by spiegel) or 2210 (taught by scott miller, who i’ve heard is better?). is it common for freshmen to switch into regular orgo? i’m mainly just concerned that 1750 will have a crazy bad curve (and i’ve heard that spiegel does use a curve system).

i am premed for now but i’m planning on majoring in pure chem so need to take orgo 2 anyways. for reference, ill be taking orgo lab, asl 2, bio 101/102, and potentially a writing seminar (engl 1014) if it fits my schedule along with orgo 2.

let me know if anyone has any advice.

Roommate situation getting really bad. Is there any hope of switching?

I'm a first-year and I'm having a pretty serious roommate conflict. I'm trying to handle it before it gets worse, but I'm not really sure what Yale's process is for changing roommates. I've heard it's nearly impossible to switch unless you have a health condition or some specific issue with the room, but I'm worried that things could get physical pretty soon if nothing changes.

Sorry in advance, this is a long post and turns into me ranting about my situation lol. But the TLDR is that I mainly want to know what the process is actually like and whether there's any realistic hope of switching roommates. I would try to talk things out with him, but as you'll see, my roommate has stopped talking to me and doesn't treat me like a human being.

We've already had a lot of disagreements about many things, but the biggest issue right now is his mechanical keyboard. It's so loud and clicky that I can hear it through noise-canceling headphones. I need maxed-out white noise on top of them to block it out. You can even hear it from the common room. We had a pretty big argument about when he can and can't use it.

Before that argument, I politely asked if there was anything he could do about the noise, or if he could use his laptop keyboard whenever I'm in the room with him as a courtesy. He doesn't have a PC, just an external display, so it's not like he'd have to completely stop whatever he was doing. He agreed at first, but then he sent me a pretty nasty text basically saying "nuh-uh, idc about the noise, it's already on the quietest settings, I need it so I can have a comfortable setup," and completely dismissed the fact that it was making me lose sleep and ruining my concentration.

So the next day I talked to my Froco about it (the goat btw). He read the text my roommate sent me, told me about YC3, and told me to "call out his BS" about the keyboard already being as quiet as it could be, especially since I could hear it through noise-canceling headphones.

After my Calc 3 midterm, I brought it up with my roommate again and was still trying to be polite about it. But his arguments were basically "nuh-uh," "it's my keyboard," and "there are louder keyboards."

I showed him the conversation I'd had with my Froco and he still refused to put it away. I asked him multiple times why I could hear it through noise-canceling headphones, and he dismissed everything I said. I told him that I thought switching to his laptop keyboard was a basic courtesy and that the noise was affecting my studying and sleep, but nah. He straight up doesn't seem to care or see me as a human being. He even said at one point "you're the one who controls how loud the keyboard is" ??? Tf.

I had to get a different Froco (also the goat) involved to resolve the situation. We agreed that he can only use the keyboard from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM. In hindsight, this screws me over a little bit because I'm usually at my dorm trying to work on something from 8:00 to 10:00 PM, but I wouldn't mind the compromise if it wasn't for the fact that this guy is straight up an asshole toward me despite the fact that I try to be friendly and talk to him.

We're taking 2 of the same classes together. We both self-studied Calc BC. We have a lot in common. We should be able to get along. I try to talk to him, ask how his day has been, and everything. I initiate 99% of the conversations. Instead of being friendly back toward me, he just ignores me like he was the one losing sleep for an entire week or dealing with nose irritation because of a pungent lavender air freshener.

But then with literally all of our other suitemates, he talks to them all the time like a normal person and has a good time with them. After a disagreement, you'd want to keep friendly ties with that person and try to strike up conversations, but nah, he does the opposite. He shuts off all communication because apparently I can't tell him to not do anything and "yOu CoNtRoL hOw lOuD iT iS". He's only making things worse. I genuinely do not understand the logic.

I've allowed him to get away with so much other stuff for a long time. For example, he's had his girlfriend sleep in our shared room for multiple nights in a row without telling me beforehand, even though I'm obviously not comfortable with having someone else staying in our room overnight without any heads-up. I'm pretty chill, so I let it happen. But if he's going to treat me like shit, why should I keep being friendly toward him? And if I try to push back on something like this, I honestly don't know how he'll react.

If I had a clicky keyboard and my roommate told me they could hear it through their headphones, I would’ve put that thing away or switched to a quieter one so quickly. Save your breath. It’s gone. But nope, not my roommate. I can usually see the good in everyone, but I’ve never felt genuine hatred toward another person until now.

Like I said, the keyboard is just one of the many issues I've had. I've already scheduled a meeting with a YC3 advisor on the 9th and my Dean on the 14th. I also plan on talking to my other suitemates but haven't had a chance yet. I'm trying to figure out what I should expect from those meetings and whether there's actually any hope of switching roommates during the year.

For people who've dealt with Yale housing/roommate issues before, what was the process like? Is switching actually as impossible as the website makes it sound? Any advice on what I should say or who else I should talk to would be appreciated.

Update 10/8: Situation got a whole lot worse. Rm turned all of my other suitemates against me when they have nothing to do with this situation. That I can’t forgive. Currently in a temporary arrangement. I am not comfortable going back to my dorm alone or without security.

Last update: I won't be replying directly on this thread or updating this post anymore. Rm did not in fact turn my suitemates against me like I thought (thankfully) but all the other stuff still applies. It is still very much a safety concern due to reasons on / not on this post and a major issue that he won't change anything unless forced. My DMs are open though. Thanks for the help to the people that gave me it.

Local 34 Union Dues

Hello everyone! I recently received an offer from Yale and I am trying to understand union dues. HR told me that I have to pay 3x my hourly pay weekly. That is about 7% of my weekly paycheck. I have called to verify this twice and I am shocked by how expensive these dues are. I have been seeing other people say that their dues are 3x their hourly pay monthly, and this fee is divided weekly. Does anyone have any clarification on this?

Financial aid for international students

Is Yale really need-blind for international students? My counselor said that if I tick the box that I require financial aid, the university will know I need aid, just not how much. I am ambivalent on whether I should tick the box or not

Fishing/Hunting/Public Lands near Yale/New Haven

Hi everyone, I am a new grad student and first time living outside of my home state. Are there quality areas nearby for fishing, hunting (squirrels, deer, turkey), and dispersed camping? I have a car and am comfortable with light off-roading + backpacking into sites. Prefer no more than 4 hours by driving, bonus points for transit-accessible spots (for fishing).

Moving to Yale for Post-Bac

Hey guys, I will most likely be starting a chem post-bac at Yale and I was wondering how I should go about looking for housing, what are some good ways to find a social circle in the area, and also how do pre-meds usually get clinical hours near campus (non-EMT). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Spotted Lanternfly App

Some Yale students built an app to encourage the eradication of the spotted lanternflies. You photograph the lanternflies you kill, submit them, and get points for verified kills. They’ve already had something like 1,000 SLFs submitted since launch. The submissions also include location data, which could help give a clearer picture of where infestations are showing up and spreading: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lantern-hunt/id6813626463

I don’t know what to do

Freshman here taking MATH 1150. I took calculus 2 in high school through a community college, and I did really well, so I thought this would be more like review. However, I just took a midterm yesterday, and I have genuinely never felt so horrible on an exam. I’ll honestly be surprised if I get more than a 50 on the midterm. I need this class for my major but the teacher doesn’t really teach and even if she does it’s the most basic thing ever but then the psets are 10x more difficult and then the midterm was just the biggest “we have never done this before” in my life.
I genuinely don’t know if I should withdraw before the 20th so it doesn’t show up on my transcript or try my best to understand the material. I’m looking over the midterm and finals from previous years, and I have genuinely never felt so confused on something that I should have learned and understood before.
