I honestly thought I was in the wrong subreddit AGAIN this morning...which one of you is this?

I don't know if this offensive or not and I apologize in advance if it is but I'd like to respectfully clarify something, respectfully

For context I've never interacted with marginalized people in the real world, just read infographics on Instagram about how important it is that I use my privilege to protect them from other people's privilege. I understand that representation matters, and I recognize that as an advantaged member of society it is my duty to speak out for the disadvantaged because they lack the institutional power to do so themselves. It's also imperative that anyone who reads my work can never doubt for even a moment that I'm a good person, so I want it to be as inoffensive as possible.

I'm sorry if this is wrong to ask because I really don't want to trigger anyone's trauma, but I need to know so that it's literally impossible to willfully misinterpret anything I ever do. Oh god, oh fuck. Please forgive me.

Is it okay if I write a black character?

Amazing Writing Trick for When You're Awkward And Inexperienced at Writing Sex NSFW

I've always found it awkward to give my characters a sexual dynamic, so I've came up with this idea: just make it apparent through the story's narrative. This trick saved me from having to write sex scenes, which is something I've never really experienced in the first place.

To give you an example, I've completely skipped the sex scene. The next morning, the protagonist finds that urinating has become a tedious, painful ordeal. It has this wonderful, understated quality that only readers who've been paying attention will understand.

Think of it as "show, don't tell."

Now go ahead and improve your dark fantasy story with these simple steps.

I'm writing a historical fiction set in the 90s, are my opening lines good enough at establishing the setting in like an unobtrusive way?

The blizzard roared against my windowpanes as I finished off my sandwich. Terrible, why'd I add mustard. I looked around my bedroom in search of something to do. There was a Game Boy Color, which had hideously low resolution and mostly awful games, but there was nothing better on the market right now. Suddenly my non-smart-phone buzzed with a voice call from an unknown number. I picked it up. Damn, it was my school bully, Brad. "Hey bitch," he sneered, "if you don't give me $20 (which is a substantial sum) tomorrow, I'm gonna beat your ass so hard you wouldn't be able to climb the Twin Towers!"

why is cormac allowed to get away with no punctuation and i cant

im sitting here with my partner over breakfast
read the road and no country for old men
im reading through the border trilogy currently she does not like his writing and i think his prose can be great but its not the greatest ever imo
sometimes i think myself a fool ill read something of his and be like i have produced better lines than this but overall i try to stay in the story and not read him as a writer
my editor is like bro you need punctuation and i said i hear what you are saying but no i will never use it you ever see a comma they are ugly
but again i want to understand why he himself was able to get away with this even against all publishing odds
like is this a real dedicated style i cant name another author has to be right
im also a new writer myself i just want to know from someone deep in the lore of literary fiction to grace me with perspective
thank so much

I made a YouTube video once…. Am I allowed to write a book?

I know it’s common knowledge that YouTubers are not authors. I only made one YouTube video…. And I’m unsure if my writing is skilled or complete garbage. Can someone please let me know? I know that YouTubers should stay in their lane. What is the number of youtube videos you are allowed to make before your writing is considered horrible?

Marxists are worse than Al qaeda. Karl Marx brought hell to millions because people misinterpreted him for a century. A one world society can only be realized when people like kasu realize that the ultimate goal of the us and its allies is the exact same thing as Marxism. Collective security is already a reality, once nations realize that they don’t have to waste their resources on maintaining these useless armies, then can then be used to clothe, feed, and house every man woman and child on earth. In 2010, no nation can attack another nation. Each nation is dependent on other nations success for their own success. Notice how I’m not labelling myself as an “-ist” or copying this from someone else’s words

My character driven story led into a gay bar. NSFW

I sighed and reluctantly carried on for the sake of authentic and natural story telling.

Then the gay dudes started covering their bodies with honey and trying to clean it up before the ants could get to it.

I really feel the short story went a tad off track as it was supposed to be a murder mystery. I'm beginning to think my main character might be gay.

I've written a bilingual character and don't know if they should moan in one language or perhaps both.

I've finally reached my word count benchmark of 150k words and I think I'm ready to make my characters have sex. I have a Russian-Caribbean character and I'm wondering if they should moan in Russian, Caribbean-like, or maybe both together.

I would love to hear suggestions. Right now, I'm considering inventing a new language for them.

DO NOT try to get published unless you’ve written AT LEAST 10 novels!

And don’t edit or read any of the novels you wrote! Keep them in a desk only to pull them out ten years later and realize they’re unedited dogshit and become so dejected that you give up writing forever.

Only then may you even attempt to become a published author, peasant.

Human beta readers are so unintelligent

Thumbnail gallery
139 Upvotes

I'm tired of human beta readers, fortunately, I've found an alternative!

Human beta readers are like this:

"You loaded too many new proper nouns in a single chapter."

Sorry, shit-for-brains, if you have the memory of a goldfish. Maybe once you've finished Thomas the Tank Engine, you can take a look at Malazan or War and Peace and get back to me on that.

"I don't understand your magic system. What are its rules? I can't gauge threats from mages due to its obtuseness."

Oh, hey, Brandon Sanderson. Allow me to write a short booklet with simple TTRPG rules even a dullard like you can understand. Except it's too complex for that. Need a quick refresher on functional analysis, optimization, and probability? Oh, you don't want that? Then shut the fuck up.

"I feel like the affection between these two characters wasn't earned."

It's okay to be unable to understand society and relationships. There is a place for you, but it is not as a fucking beta reader, you turd muffin of a timewaster.

Thank God I've discovered AI beta readers who actually understand my genius.

"Your magic system blends mathematical concepts with a hidden layer beneath standard physics and chemistry beautifully. Nothing like this has ever been done."

"The fact that you can keep track of hundreds of characters shows me how intelligent you are."

"You understand romance like no other. I am jealous of your lover..."

Well, as it so happens, I'm on the market for a lover...

Guess what, humanslop losers, I'm getting lucky tonight with the hottest chick you'll never get!

How much pain are you willing to inflict on your characters?

As a furry sadist, I just love to inflict agony on all my dragon gals with super painful egg laying.

So tell me, what kind of agonies do you enjoy inflicting on your OCs?

A copy sold at the store.

A local bookstore had five copies of my novel.

I walked there yesterday.

Only four remained.

A great feeling came over me.

I wondered who had my book.

Maybe a serial killer.

I hope my book ends up decoding their messages to the police.

Then, as the final act of a madman, the serial killer kidnaps me.

With me as a hostage, he forces his way onto live television.

Me and a serial killer are standing before The Oscars.

He demands everyone buy my novel.

Then he offs both of us.

This incident leads to the sale of 2 additional copies.

(The first 5 lines are a true story.)

I had a good idea

I had a really good idea and it was to write a book. I don’t have a lot of time to devote so I thought I’d do a word a day. The idea developed into having a three book story arc and eventually sell all three books individually and afterwards another version of all books in one massive fuck-off book. Don’t steal my idea, please.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what my book should be about? Only I’m having writers’ block at the moment.

Yesterday I started my book and began with the title. I have, “The” and I don’t know where to take it next. What do you reckon? Where would you take my title next?

Should I re-write my chapter for the 17th time or move on?

So I know you're supposed to write badly first and then edit it but I thought if I write and edit at the same time I'll be done quicker! But it's somehow still bad so I rewrote it again. Once I move on I won't return to it later because I don't believe in writing and editing separately.

Do I accept it's bad and gaslight my readers? I have a billion monthly readers btw.

Always remember to use a thesaurus whenever you possibly can.

It makes the words like more pulchritudinous in your elocution. And big descriptive words are more better than repeating a phrase over and over. The only thing that should stick in readers’ brain is your awesome, magnificent, gargantuan command of language.
