Question/Observation [1940] Bot question Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

The bot claims there is only one solution left after my second guess. The game then accepts my third guess as a valid word (and I think it falls within the parameters of fair play), but it is not the one solution… Doesn’t this mean there were two possible solutions then?
Does this make sense?

This was my son's answer to Wordle #355 (June 9, 2022). Being a twentysomething male, the first two were his standard starting guesses. Quite possibly the best Wordle solve ever IMHO.

Question/Observation [####] What percentage of players solve Wordle on each guess — 1st try through 6th — across the whole history of the game?

I've always wondered this. Is there an all-time distribution anywhere, or does the NYT ever publish it?

[####] Question about Wordle Bot Suggestions

I’m trying to understand how the bot suggestions could be helpful. For example, my first guess (and normal start word) leaves a game wide open (only get an E, but in the wrong spot; lots of other choices here). My second guess brings it down to 3 words (which is information I don’t know at the time, unless I’ve got some side program running which is eliminating letters and culling the list of available words). Here is where I struggle with the bot.

My third guess eliminated 1 of those three (but also remember you don’t know you are down to three unless you are crossing all other available words off a list somewhere). Bot thinks it is helpful to say “Guessing XXXXX, for example, would have guaranteed eliminating every word but one.”

While that may be true, with the information available to me, my guess and the Bot’s suggestion were equally valid as guesses, and there is nothing useful in the suggestion I could apply to another game. The Bot is offering advice based on information not readily available in-game or which a computer can process after the fact.

Am I missing something?

Question/Observation [1941] Bot Analysis Question Spoiler

World Answer 10/12/26

I have a question about what the Wordle Bot considers “most likely”. Today, my third guess was “typed”, which was one of the remaining possible solutions. However, the bot scored it a zero(!) because “yodel” was far more likely apparently? I don’t understand how it calculates likeliness; and even so, isn’t “typed” a *far* more common word?

[####] I built a free leaderboard for my Wordle group — now it supports more languages, and I’d love feedback

My friends and I play Wordle every day, and we used to keep track of everyone’s scores manually.

That turned into a small project called Wordle Challenge. I shared it here before, and since then it’s grown into EnigmaRank.

The idea is still the same: a simple place for friends to share their daily results and keep a monthly competition going.

You can:

  • create private groups and invite friends with a link
  • paste the result you copy from your daily puzzle, including the colored grid
  • see monthly rankings based on average attempts
  • see everyone’s daily grids and how many people in your group have posted
  • browse previous results and monthly champions
  • import older results from CSV/Excel

It now also supports results from daily word games in Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), French, and Italian, alongside English Wordle. Each group follows its own game.

I’ve also redesigned the website to make switching between groups and checking results easier. And the iPhone app has just been approved, which is a pretty exciting milestone for something that started as a way to keep score with friends.

It’s still free, with no ads.

https://enigmarank.com

App:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/enigmarank/id6811390812

If you try it, I’d really appreciate feedback on:

  1. Was creating or joining a group straightforward?
  2. Was pasting your first result easy?
  3. Were the rankings and daily results clear?
  4. If you play in another language, did your result get recognized correctly?

You don’t need a whole group to try it, but I’d especially love to hear from people who already compare results with friends.

I’m still using it with my own friends and improving it as we go. If something feels confusing or breaks, please tell me—that’s exactly the feedback I’m looking for.

Question/Observation [####] I don't really get why so many people play so that every answer could potentially be Correct-

I know that this probably works better for people who have a very big vocabulary and can just think of five letter words on the spot, but for me personally, I always follow the same pattern-

My first two guesses are always-

Words (Funny first guess)

Train (This was the correct answer the first time I played Wordle, and I was proud of myself for managing to get it on the last guess, so I always guess it's second. Besides, the only letter it shares with Words is an R).

My next two guesses are-

Blech

Jumpy

I only guess these words because they don't share any letters with the above two guesses, so it allows me to cover more of the alphabet.

By this point, I have to start guessing what the word might actually be, and usually by this point I have a pretty good idea of where some or most of the letters go.

Of course, I'll ditch the plan in accordance with the information I get. If by the time I type Train or Blech, I've already found five yellow letters, I don't bother with Jumpy, since I already know none of those letters are in the correct word, and it would be a waste of a guess.

But it seems like a lot of people genuinely play the game so that every answer they give could potentially be correct. If they get a yellow letter, they will ALWAYS make sure that their next guess includes that letter in a different spot. And if they get a green letter, they ALWAYS make sure that their next guess includes that letter in the same spot.

It gets to the point where if they guess a word that obviously can't be the correct answer, they consider it a: 'throw away Word,' as if it's something to be Shamed.

I understand why this strategy can work, but it also seems risky for me. I've seen people play Wordle, and get four green letters on a guess, but there are genuinely a lot of possibilities for what that fifth letter could be, and yet for some reason, instead of guessing other obscure words to search for that missing letter, they just keep guessing with those four green letters all in that same spot, and before they know it, they either get lucky, or they lose.
