Wow I feel like an idiot at how quickly people see it but at the same time it is so hard to read

It's cursive so if you are young enough that wasn't taught to you in school, cursive Z looks nothing like printed Z so there's no reason you WOULD see it.

Read it immediately over the other word. Then came to the comments feeling…

Haha same. I read it immediately. I did always have a problem writing z’s. I used to journal in cursive just to keep the practice up. I’m gonna do that again. Mainly just stopped journaling in general.

I was old enough to learn and such, but still don’t remember how to write or read a cursive Z. This might be the first time I’ve seen one written in 30+ years

Why in the hell would one write z with the ‘tail’ below the line? Makes no sense. We write letters like j and y this way.

It can be in Cyrillic cursive also

Why would it be in Cyrillic cursive

Why not?

It's cursive, not hard at all

Ugly cursive, but yeah. Just as people are no longer going to be able to write it, they won’t be able to read it anymore. We’ll be reading this like ancient scripture.

I'm almost 40 and they've been saying that since I was in grade school

There’s nothing ugly about this at all. In fact I’d argue it’s better than 99% of handwriting out there.

It’s a funky looking cursive z, shouldn’t it be more rounded on top

Did you not learn cursive in school?

1

u/Sad_Net_609 19h ago

I don’t think they teach it anymore.

u/Objective-Tea5324 19h ago

It may depend on where you live but my oldest who is 13 was taught and my 10 yr old should be starting soon.

u/Sad_Net_609 19h ago

Oh gotcha, my friends daughter never learned how and shes 19

There are many different versions of cursive. The one I learned in school has "z" that looks like this:

u/SqueekyBootz 19h ago

To me, thats a f7nky lower case s and an upper case L

3

u/After-Past-9404 19h ago

Yep. It's a completely different cursive than the one you learned. That's why I'm struggling to read OP's image even though I did learn cursive at school.

Here's the whole thing:

Where were you taught?

I wouldn’t know what the lowercase letter represented unless it was part of a word. The second one looks like an uppercase L.

Czech Republic.

Yeah, imagine me freaking out when I encountered the US cursive "G" for the first time as a kid. That one's really impossible to figure out without prior instructions.

1

u/noturFaultitsmine 16h ago

Yes my first thought was an uppercase “G”… I understand the confusion now lol

1

u/Technical_Part6263 19h ago

This looks like a lowercase r/s hybrid and an uppercase L, lol

1

u/NigerianFriedChicken 19h ago

That is a lowercase R and a capital L 😭

u/After-Past-9404 18h ago

Yeah... not in our cursive 😅

u/Ok_Street4822 19h ago

It’s not hard to read at all…

In your defense, I was going to say "it's trying to say zen". Which, is kind of ironic, because it's something we step on and wipe our gross shoes all over. Normalize door mats that have our enemies and/or insecurities on them.

Do you not know how to write?

TBF, I think they stopped teaching cursive in American public schools like 20 years ago.

u/Flathead89 19h ago

I was learning it in the 2nd grade here in VA in 1996....then we moved to NC halfway through the school year and my class there was still doing first grade stuff. NC never taught us cursive or required us to write in it.

1

u/mindlessfreak30 19h ago

I'm the opposite. I switched schools, same state different districts, only like 15mins apart and the new school held me back. They made me repeat the 2nd grade because I hadn't been taught cursive in the previous district yet... looking at it now kinda messed up considering cursive isn't utilized anymore.

It was a real question. I see now that it sounded kinda rude. My bad.

Actually half of the US requires cursive to be taught in school.

2

u/halfpighalfmanbear 19h ago

Yeah, I did a quick search after I posted. Common Core excluded cursive writing when it rolled out in 2010, but over the last 10 years, many states have reintroduced it. My home state just made it a requirement again earlier this year.

Cursive z's were always stupid. Like, the end of the z is right there at the beginning of the e, WTF did we let some Victorian tell us it needed a more dramatic loop than a j or g.

It was probably some idiot at Oxford who thought zetas were rad or some bull$hit.
