New, what is it? Small prophet object - water device on bed?

Post image

What is this thing ? At first I thought it was an old CPAP and then an espresso machine!

Teasmade

733

u/EugeneHarke 22h ago edited 15h ago

In case anyone reading this thread is wondering what a teasmaid is. It is an alarm clock that wakes you up with a cup of tea. They were all the rage in the 80s.

Edit: to make sure /u/giganticturnip did not think I was talking to him directly.

I enjoy having breakfast in bed. I like waking up to the smell of bacon, sue me. And since I don't have a butler, I have to do it myself. So, most nights before I go to bed, I will lay six strips of bacon out on my George Foreman grill. Then I go to sleep. When I wake up, I plug in the grill. I go back to sleep again. Then I wake up to the smell of crackling bacon. It is delicious, it's good for me, it's the perfect way to start the day.

Why not get a timer plug and have it come on before your alarm goes off so you don't need to get up first?

u/saint_ryan 19h ago

That was a Michael Scott quote - he doesn’t actually do that.

It does the same thing but from 40 years ago. It’s the British (hot tea) version of a timer drip coffee machine. Which I, as a coffee person, depend on for my daily existence

1

u/ArguablyMe 16h ago

As is only right and fair.

10

u/Motor-Bag-4093 19h ago

I prefer the mister tickle way of making breakfast in bed

7

u/feel-the-avocado 19h ago

Make it a wifi timer plug so you can turn it on from your phone.

4

u/realglowup 17h ago

OK, This is brilliant. I was worried about them just having it on a timer and sleeping in or through an alarm one day.

9

u/DasArtmab 17h ago

You can sleep through an alarm, you can’t sleep through bacon

3

u/1983Targa911 14h ago

Hold my beer. I’ve fallen asleep while motorcycling. I’ve also fallen asleep with coffee in my mouth, awakened only because of the coffee dribbling out of my mouth on to my shirt.

3

u/kindnessincmusic 22h ago

you could buy an electrical plancha and a programmable switch and automate all of that

3

u/Glass_Ear_5886 15h ago

It takes the misery out of making tea but some of us like the misery

2

u/ZenObserve 13h ago

Feck off!

1

u/SD_ukrm 11h ago

The misery of making tea is the fact that you end up with a cup of tea.

13

u/Sun_Bearzerker 19h ago

I can't tell if you're kidding or not, but you know you can get a plug in timer that will automatically turn the grill on at set times in the day, right?

Also I worry about the bacteria that may grow on the bacon in this time frame, but you do you.

27

u/AllenSmithee59 19h ago

It's Michael on "The Office" explaining how he burned his foot.

1

u/Signal_Plane1114 15h ago

I should have known that lol

12

u/Signal_Plane1114 19h ago

bacon is a cured meat, i mean not shelf stable but it isnt the worst meat to be left sitting out for awhile

2

u/Emotional-Ad6682 16h ago

What’s it cured of?

5

u/divorce_2025 16h ago

Super Aids

2

u/Signal_Plane1114 15h ago

cured of anything that doesnt like growing on salt and nitrite cured meat

2

u/ProfDoomDoom 15h ago

Not trichonosis.

8

u/seamustho 18h ago

It’s a quote from the show the office lol

9

u/Sun_Bearzerker 18h ago

Sigh, my chronic lack of pop culture knowledge strikes again.

1

u/seamustho 5h ago

You should watch it! Show really hits its stride by season 2 first season is still good though.

6

u/baward72 18h ago

You are worried about bacteria and not the place bursting into flames. Do not worry about the bacteria any that survive the fire will get flushed out by the fire hose.

4

u/Sun_Bearzerker 18h ago

Easy, just use the water from the kettle to put it out.

1

u/baward72 17h ago

The fire has melted a hole in the kettle and that water has been consumed by the fire.

1

u/Sun_Bearzerker 16h ago

Hrmmm... bedside fire extinguisher?

3

u/Valuable_Month1329 16h ago

Just sleep under a fire blanket

https://giphy.com/gifs/MA13y4rFU0f6c2uWGL

1

u/Sun_Bearzerker 16h ago

Now we're bedside cookin

2

u/Andouiette 17h ago

Careful out there, that seems like a good way to accidentally start a fire in the kitchen if you fall back asleep

2

u/Suspicious-Bid7696 17h ago

Spoken like a man with a foreman grill burn on his feet.

1

u/thatswherethedevilis 16h ago

you might want to start sleeping with shoes on. just saying.

36

u/bantamw 19h ago

My sister in law had a Goblin Teasmade. She threw it out after her husband got very drunk and in the middle of the night decided to have a piss in the kettle portion, topping it up. Cue 6:30am boiling piss smell 😬

26

u/AdeOfSigmar 19h ago

I think id throw out the husband too!

8

u/Ok_Lawyer_829 17h ago

I'm humoured that you would say "sister in law and husband" rather than "my brother and his wife" like you just can't be related to some kettle peeing fool.

7

u/TheStusha 17h ago

It could be OP’s spouse’s sister and her husband. 🤷🏻‍♀️

3

u/Ok_Lawyer_829 16h ago

I never considered that. Good point.

1

u/bantamw 15h ago

Correct. It’s my ex-wife’s sister’s husband.

2

u/Aware_Ad_431 17h ago

That would boil my piss for sure

1

u/ClintEastwont 13h ago

Dear god that’s awful

5

u/JeffAndSasha 19h ago

Did they make one for beer? Maybe a mini fridge that opens on a set time.

4

u/fh3131 19h ago

*Teasmade. It's a brand name/trademark.

5

u/KarenFromAccounts 15h ago

If you want to start a great Mandela Effect argument, ask people if they think it is a Teasmaid or a Teasmade.

Most will be shocked to find out it is and always has been Teasmade.

3

u/Comediorologist 18h ago

They were around for a while before that, too. I learned about them on an episode of Endeavour, the cop show largely set in the 1960s.

2

u/RobinBumholes 15h ago

Oh, they've existed a lot longer than that. I think they've been making them since the 1930s (about when middle class households ceased being able to afford servants)

5

u/perfect_insanity93 20h ago

Why am I only learning about this now. God damn. I just need one that does coffee and im set.

https://giphy.com/gifs/DJtjV54B3NMju

10

u/dgtbfan 20h ago

I'm pretty sure you can do exactly this with a Keurig individual coffeemaker or any generic coffeepot.

2

u/BeerElf 17h ago

You could use one of those timer plugs, I use them for the Christmas lights I put up. It cheers me up when I come home from work in the dark and the lights are all on.

2

u/BelleMorte00 14h ago

You all know that coffee makers have timers you can set to start at a certain time right? …. Right?

1

u/perfect_insanity93 8h ago

Espresso machine guys... I dont do black coffee.

2

u/Fearless_Lab 17h ago

Well that explains the line in The Commitments about Jimmy's mum wanting one.

2

u/odmirthecrow 17h ago

I think you mean u/ in your edit, not r/

2

u/catmadwoman 17h ago

70s for me 😁

2

u/WaffleHouseGladiator 19h ago

That's Bri'ish AF.

1

u/Fibrex1001 17h ago

Had no idea

1

u/AntiPinguin 16h ago

It’s the type of smart home device I could actually use

2

u/EugeneHarke 15h ago

The problem with them is... Firstly, you have to set them up the night before. Secondly, the quality of the tea they make. It's much easier and better to guilt a spouse or child into bringing you a cup of tea in the morning.

1

u/voluotuousaardvark 16h ago

I can see why, its an amazing idea im surprised phased out

0

u/Hanox13 16h ago

Eugene, you’ve made a mistake… it’s u/giganticturnip, you’ve linked to a subreddit, not mentioned a user.

-13

u/giganticturnip 22h ago edited 22h ago

It's a teasmade. And why would i be wondering when I provided the answer.

Edit: before r/EugeneHarke changed his comment, his reply to mine was, "In case you're wondering...". As it was in direct reply to me, I responded to it.

8

u/AdTraditional8077 22h ago

He was talking to me. I had no idea what a teasmade is.

-6

u/giganticturnip 22h ago

Oh, okay. Was just in response to my comment.

6

u/AdTraditional8077 22h ago

Correct, not only are you knowledgeable about teasmade but also very observant.

-1

u/EugeneHarke 22h ago

Not everything is about you.

-4

u/giganticturnip 22h ago

You selected "Reply" to my comment, which indicated you were replying to my comment. You could have just commented on the main thread.

4

u/jbpm83 21h ago

I feel like you’re getting upset about nothing. The way I read this whole exchange was you named what it is, and then u/EugeneHarke was adding on to explain what it was for the rest of us. They could have posted a whole new comment thread but decided to add to yours since you said what it was initially and basically as a way to give credit to you.

-1

u/giganticturnip 21h ago

I'm not upset. I simply replied to a direct reply to my comment. I'm not the one commenting "not everything is about you" or changing my comments to pretend I said something else.

26

u/christofilth 19h ago

About twenty years ago my mum bought a second hand one for her bedroom, and I was so jealous of it, she used it every day until it broke. Waking up to a cup of tea every morning in bed should be every British persons dream, we need to bring them back into fashion.

4

u/The_Primate 18h ago

you can still get em in argos and on amazon. what are you waiting for? have at it!

2

u/sock_cooker 14h ago

I got a second hand one off ebay- it's 60 years old and works perfectly. I love it, easily my favourite gadget and I have loads of gadgets

1

u/soihavetosay 16h ago

Well after reading bentamw s comment, ill only ever feel good about using a brand new machine... a second hand one could have been full of a strangers piss

2

u/christofilth 15h ago

Why did I have to read this haha?

13

u/MathiasMi 20h ago

Hardcore historical BBC documentary fans know this.

8

u/DitaVonTeasmade 19h ago

Yes?

1

u/erin4thenguyen 16h ago

Username checks out

8

u/Sweaty-Adeptness1541 18h ago

My parents had one when I was a kid. The noise of the boiling water would wake up the whole household, not just my parents.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teasmade

8

u/MrSmokii 18h ago

my mum used to have one, she'd make tea for me, my dad and herself without having to get out of bed in the morning.

i have fond memories of sitting on their bed first thing in the morning, drinking a cup of tea and watching wacky races.

6

u/MinimumSuccotash8540 21h ago

Am I the only one worried about burns? It seems like a really bad idea to have it so close to the bed.

7

u/peegee56 18h ago

We had one as a wedding present and it definitely did splutter a lot and if it was on your bedside table you could feel hot splashes, my wife quickly consigned it to the back of the cupboard

1

u/dan_in_his_own_way 18h ago

Something I've always seen in movies and never in real life.

1

u/Jonesy1966 16h ago

These things used to be soooooo loud that they'd wake me up at 5am from my parent's room which was 3 rooms away from mine when I was a kid

-1

u/Tamthebam1010 14h ago

Teasmaid to be precise but close enough

1

u/giganticturnip 13h ago

I believe the correct spelling is Teasmade, as it was a trade name.
