Accidentally auto saved over girlfriends game
Hey everyone. I’ve never made a Reddit post before, so sorry if the formatting is off. I 30m live with my girlfriend 27f. She on her time off really enjoys writing a book she’s working on, and playing games on her pc among many other hobbies. One of the games she has been playing a lot of I decided to give a try. It’s a game called prison architect. She’s put a lot of time and effort into making hers perfect and unique. I came home from work and logged onto her laptop as I don’t have my own. I don’t do much that would require one over my smartphone. I saw she was logged into a game, so I hit save. After I saved her game, I hit create new prison. I started my own prison and played for a little bit, then went to save mine, only to notice the horror that was my prison was autosaving over her prison, which was on the same autosave file. I never thought that creating a new game would automatically autosave over the last one. I figured it would make a new autosave. What I’m here to ask is how do I break the news that I messed up? She put so much effort into this game and I accidentally just erased it all. I feel bad and don’t know what I can do.

Yeah, that sucks. Best you can do is check if there's any other auto or manual saves (the latter of which is always a good habit) and if not, apologise. End of the day, it's an annoying but not too major accident.

Hi! Im the girlfriend. I love this man so much.
Unfortunately the game was not recoverable but it's not the end of the world. I've only had this save a few months and contrary to TealIndependent's belief I do not spend all day every day on it so I really didn't lose quite as much as he thought I did. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
PS, if anyone was worried, he was not crucified. We will start a new save together on my next day off work.

OP, Just be honest and to the point. Tell her you are horrified at what you did and that you would do whatever she wants to make it right. Direct and to the point. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

It does suck and yeah she’s gonna be mad but you know what, it feels a lot better when the person genuinely apologizes. Maybe you can hit up a techy sub to see if there’s some back end way to recover the file

Check the game files. Very likely its in there. Google can help. There is also probanly a subreddit for said game, like most games. They would likely help too. Worst case scenario, you can dm me and I can attempt to direct you.

i don’t have any advice for you but i wish you the best man. that sucks. if it were me i would tell her straight up, first thing when i see her next. apologize but not over apologize. i’d do my best to make it up to her by buying her something nice maybe. she will be upset and there’s no way around that, but be genuine and sincere, that’s my best advice

As someone who plays prison architect, if you actually saved her prison, then you shouldn't have to worry about the autosaves. The autosaves are just for if the game crashes before you manually save it again. Just make sure you dont name your prison and hers the same, and both saves should be able to exist on the same device.

You are going to find out how she handles disappointment and that's a very important thing to know in a relationship. Take it as a lesson for you to be more careful and a lesson to observe if she can work through it maturely. She'll be disappointed yes but will she have a major meltdown, start calling you names, hitting you, throwing things, etc.? Will she be forgiving and understanding albeit frustrated or will she tell you she hates you and not speak to you for days? Watch and learn who your gf is.

Not really I’m 37 my wife is 34 we both play games together you would be surprised in 2026 how many people do this to unwind especially overstimulated introverts with kids. If video games aren’t for you that’s perfectly ok but don’t knock what people do for their own sense of relief then again drinking a case of liquor in your garage by yourself in the 80s seems to have worked just fine for you in life.

There is a way! If the game is offline and local only right click the folder on your C drive and click properties, you’re looking for something called previous versions restore to before you actually played, you should be out of hot water depending on how much time she loses but there is a way I promise. As long as it’s a local file if it’s online your fucked lol
