Wakefield Council, what have they cut to make £18 million of savings?

I watched the full council meeting yesterday, and Karl Johnson said out of the £25 million short fall, they've found and cut £18 million since May, leaving £7 million left to go.

What have they cut or reduced exactly for such significant savings? I've seen the odd £60k here, £100k there, but only a few items, and they've decided to spend an extra £50k on road line painting.

He also said if they make the £25 million shortfall up, it's still a 4.99% council tax rise next year, so I guess we should prepare for that.

Anyone else fed up with all the curbed cars everywhere?

Now, I realise there's nothing we can really do about it (it would be the council's job to fine people if anything) and this moan won't achieve much either. But I'm more just wondering if anyone else has noticed an increase in selfishness from people parking their cars on curbs?

I live in the Ossett area and I realise there are some roads where curbing is pretty much necessary due to the roads being so narrow. It's still not ideal for people walking, but I understand it's necessary. If an emergency vehicle or something ever needed to get down one of those roads then at least they'll have space. This I can turn a blind eye to.

However I've noticed that even on main roads, people just park their whole car on the pavement and force people that are walking out onto the road. I've seen people doing it near blind bends and all sorts.

Parents dropping their kids off at school/nursery block pavements (you'd think they'd have more sense with kids being about), people going into local cafe and things do too.

The crazy thing is that it doesn't even help the flow of traffic most of the time. If a car is only a quarter or half curbed on a main road, traffic will still have to stop and give way to oncoming traffic most of the time anyway. I know I usually have to when I'm out driving. So there's literally no gain, it just blocks walkways.

I did catch someone when I was driving past the "Wired Whippet" the other day (fantastic cafe by the way, so certainly nothing against them, but it does seem to be a hotspot for people curbing) and they covered pretty much the entire pavement on the side of the road next to the park. I had my window down at the time and did shout "you wouldn't get a pushchair through there would you!" As I was going past, but I doubt it came out as anything sensical and the fella just looked at me with a gormless face.

Anyway, I just wondered what other people's thoughts were. It seems to be getting worse and whilst I know there's nothing we can do about it other than moan... I just wanted to know if I'm alone with this as everyone seems to do it apart from me!

Just moved recently, looking for job or IT jobs

Hi Guys

I have moved to Wakefield recently and I'd like to find an IT job so I can build my experience. So far I've been applying for 1st line support jobs and apprenticeships. I've had a few interviews but I never hear anything back after. If anyone on here is already in IT that can help me get in or advise me that would be great. I know the IT market is very competitive. I have built my own gaming PC at home and I have knowledge of windows operating systems.

If I can't find anything I'd have to find an agency jobs. I've applied for Royal mail so far and Amazon so any other agencies that are good please list below. Many thanks!

Not a bad ol' place to live sandal on a nice evening. I used to find nice spots like this to smoke a joint, now its just to take some time out above all the noise below, a few minutes a day to relax, reflect on all loved, all lost, and to slow down and breathe.

Life consists of two days, one for you one against you. So when it's for you don't be proud or reckless, and when it's against you be patient, for both days are a test for you.

A few photos from inside the Town Hall in Horbury. The building dates back to 1904 and has some impressive stained glass windows.

Horbury itself dates back to the 1500's.

If you are in the area, a few of the old buildings are open to the public. Such as Kidcote Lockup, the old Convent, etc.

Music House Music DJs & Producers

I’m looking to bring together local DJs and producers who’d be up for putting on something in Wakefield.

The idea is simple: get a community together, find out who’s interested, then approach a local venue about hosting a trial night. A proper chance for local talent to play, meet each other and bring a bit more life to Wakefield’s nightlife.

I’m a house music DJ & do dabble when I have the time in production, but I’d love to hear from people across different genres. Nothing’s booked yet — I’m testing whether there’s enough interest to make it happen.

I used to play out a lot 10+ years ago all over the country but kids came along and cooled the passion for a bit so I'm looking to get back into the swing of things instead of DJing to my acoustic panels.

If you’re a DJ or producer, comment with what you play or make

Even if you're not a DJ or Producer but simply love the house sound and would attend, I'd also love to hear from you.

The more interest we can show a venue, the better the chance of this getting going.

Who’s in?

Meeting new people

So its a rant plus looking for actually good people cos since I've moved to UK, having a south asian background, its been really hard.

In the start i tried to communicate with people but they seemed aggressive and bothered and tried ometv to talk to people but right after they see me they say racial things and swipe. So I'd really like to know people as this is my last resort.
