(Warning: LONG)
As a personal project, I've been looking into what we know about the Nomad from Bloodlines 2 in an attempt to compile as complete a timeline as possible regarding their life and travels. To do this, I've scoured dialogue from the game, codex entries, dev diaries, and dialogue files which never made it into the final game. As a rule, I am assuming that everything said or written about Phyre is true, meaning that the dialogue choices of "I am a traveler/warrior/survivor," and the differences which spawn from them are all equally canon. The only backstories which are not compatible are what Phyre says about their mortal life, which range anywhere from street urchin, to rebel, to Vizier, to claimant to the throne. Any one of these could be true, or all of them, and it would not affect the vampiric tale of the Nomad. So let's get into it.
c. 1590-1595: Crimea - The Nomad is born.
Phyre claims to be, "150 years older than [the USA]," which places their birth in 1626. But this refers to their vampiric age, not total age. We know this because Safia says they left Constantinople in 1633 as a vampire, and Phyre is obviously not seven years old. The codex entry "Blankbody SG-23 File" describes the Nomad as being in their 30s. If we use c. 1625 as their embrace date, they were probably born sometime in the 1590s.
As for their birthplace, Phyre says they fought in the Crimean War to defend their homeland against the Tsar.
1601-1603: Crimea
Codex: The Strengths of the Eldest (Survivor Backstory): "Persisting through the Great Russian Famine of the 17th century when it was nearly impossible to find sustenance and even harder to leave is no easy feat, even for a Kindred."
The Great Russian Famine struck between the years of 1601-1603. The Nomad would have been a pre-teen or teen. The quote mentions leaving, which leads me to believe the Nomad left Crimea during the famine, likely heading to...
1603-1633: Constantinople
Phyre: "Constantinople. Four hundred years ago. My mortal home. My home afterward, too, for a time. My favorite place was the Grand Bazaar. The colors, the vitality. Air heavy with perfume and spice from lands that I then only dreamed of." -“I am a traveler/Buying dreams in Constantinople,” dialogue options.
Phyre (to Ryong): "One night I will tell you of Kosem Sultan.” -(Kosem Sultan was regent from 1623-1632)
Safia: "I see... one more thing? I always wondered - the records say you left Constantinople in 1633, but...That was the year of the Cebali fire which burned a fifth of the city!”
So we know the Nomad was embraced around 1626, in their 30s, and left the city in 1633. Where they went to...
1642-1666: London, England
Phyre: "I have escaped wars over the mortal crowns of Spain, England, Poland, Austria." -“I am a survivor/The fight for power," dialogue options.
Phyre: "I saw the Witch Trials as they played out across Europe. They slew many of our kind - I barely escaped." -“I am a survivor/Mortals that hate,” dialogue options.
It seems likely that the Nomad spent around a decade on the move, likely finding nowhere on the continent to settle due to the devastation and danger caused by the 30 Years War which was raging at the time. So they wound up in England... just in time for the English Civil War and concurrent witch trials (1642-1651).
As for why they left:
"My favorite tale is that of the title "Nomad" appearing in Dawson's report of the Great Fire of London in 1666. To survive such a large blaze that effectively removed much of the city in just 4 days... I can only imagine." -Codex: The Strengths of the Eldest (Survivor)
In addition, unused dialogue extracted from the game files has Safia saying: "The Black Hand set a ring of flames around you in England, and the people drove you through them in hatred and fear. You bore weeping scars for months."
So the Nomad survived the war and witch trials, only for the Sabbat to drive them from the country with fire.
1686: Nauplia, Greece
Codex: Book - Historical Record of The Elder known as "The Nomad" (Warrior Backstory): Witness the tale of Francesco Carloni in 1686: "The siege of Nauplia soaked the earth with blood. The fortress would not have been taken without the action of a small force led by the Wanderer. They worked through the night to assault the gates of the defenders and, well before dawn, the walls were breached. Only the Wanderer survived, but the day was ours."
For historical context, this siege is when Venice took the Peloponnese peninsula from the Ottoman Empire. This was likely the Nomad's first encounter with the Venetians.
1693: Glina, Croatia
Codex: Book - Historical Record of The Elder known as "The Nomad" (Survivor Backstory): Witness the tale of Mara Hatun in 1693: "When we finally crossed the pass and entered into the town of Glina there was nothing but rot and devastation. And yet when my mistress investigated the fortress, she returned with an unknown companion whose clothes were stained dark with old blood. This one was not afflicted by injury or hunger, maintaining that their constitution was sturdy, and asking much about what had passed in the world outside."
There is some interesting info here, namely that the Nomad seems to have gone into a brief torpor that could have been as long as seven years (1686-1693). Perhaps they continued warring against the Ottomans and were wounded?
There's also some interesting connective tissue, as Croatia was largely controlled by the Republic of Venice at the time. Which leads us to...
1693-c. 1710: Venice
Phyre: "I used to roam the calli of Venice, La Serenissima, late at night. We all wore masks then. Everything was an intrigue, a romance. We played such beautiful, deadly games. It was amusing. Until it wasn't. But there we are." -“I am a traveler/The Masquerades of Venice," dialogue options.
Now, there is no hint at when exactly the Nomad was in Venice. Carnival was outlawed in 1797, so it could have been any time before then. I have chosen to place their time in Venice here because it flows well from the previous and following information about their whereabouts.
Previous: As aforementioned, Croatia, where they awoke from torpor, was a Venetian holding. Whoever told them about the events they'd missed likely spoke of Venice's recent victory against the Ottomans. Having previously aided the Venetians in Greece, the Nomad might have been intrigued and decided to see the city for themself.
Following: Now here's where I have to rely strictly on historical context to make some assumptions. The Nomad was next seen in Denmark (spoiler). Denmark, during the early 18th century, was having problems dealing with Barbary Coast pirates attacking their ships and engaged in efforts to combat them and free those taken captive. The Nomad likely learned much of sailing during their time in Venice, and when they fled the city it would have been by sea. From there they could have fallen victim to piracy and then subsequently been liberated by Danish anti-piracy efforts. I know it's a stretch, but it leads well to...
1710: Køge Bay, Denmark
Codex: The Strengths of the Eldest (Survivor Backstory): "There is also evidence of the Nomad’s presence on the Dannebroge when it was destroyed."
The Dannebroge was a Danish man-o-war which exploded during the battle of Køge Bay in 1710, leaving as few as three survivors. Was the Nomad responsible for the explosion? Who knows. The important thing to take away from this is that the Nomad had taken to life at sea and even gained military experience.
c. 1715-1730: A Pirate's Life For Me
Phyre: "Three hundred years ago, I had a ship and a crew. We wrought such beautiful horrors. Merchant ships, naval vessels, and others. We did not discriminate. We would board. Stain white sails red. Turn entrails to rigging. How free we were, then." -“I am a warrior/Bringing terror to the ocean,” dialogue options.
So now we have a Nomad who has gained naval experience and has likely had run-ins with pirates in the past, and just in time for the "Golden Age of Piracy" which flourished in the aftermath of the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
1730-1734: Hungary, Austrian Empire
Codex: Notes - The Nomad of Constantinople (Traveler Backstory): "A pilgrim referred to as Viadante di Constantinapoli was allowed access to the Vatican for research purposes. It is unclear what the reason for their access was, but the description and name closely matches that of another pilgrim who was employed by the court of Charles VI to lead a mapping expedition to the northern Carpathians."
Charles VI ruled from 1711-1740, and in 1716 his royal geographer Johann Baptist Homann produced a map of the Principality of Transylvania, which had recently been taken from the Ottoman Empire. It stands to reason Charles would back further mapping expeditions in the area. It would also explain...
1734: Sofia, Bulgaria
Codex: Letter from Damascus (Traveler Backstory): "XXX identification of the Nomad assumes a voyage from XXX to Cairo. A difficult journey for any of us, but they are known for their extensive travels. Their features match drawings of XXX from Sofia in 1734."
Now, appearing in drawings doesn't mean the Nomad was necessarily in Sofia, but at least the general area.
1734-1738: Poland
Phyre: "I have escaped wars over the mortal crowns of Spain, England, Poland, Austria." -“I am a survivor/The fight for power,” dialogue options.
The War of Polish Succession was fought from 1733-1738. Technically this wasn't the only war for Poland's crown fought during the Nomad's lifetime, but it fits with their movements during this time.
1740-1748: Prague, Austrian Empire
Phyre: "I remember Prague, with its hundred spires. And its libraries. Places of terror and delight. I read ancient books that were printed when I was young. And I read many secrets. Invaluable and unutterable." -“I am a traveler/The libraries of Prague, dialogue options.
As for the timeframe:
Phyre: "I have escaped wars over the mortal crowns of Spain, England, Poland, Austria." -“I am a survivor/The fight for power,” dialogue options.
The War of Austrian Succession was fought from 1740-1748.
1755: Lisbon, Portugal
Codex: Notes - The Nomad of Constantinople (Survivor Backstory): "A newly-arrived farmhand referred to as Viajante de Constantinopla was in Lisbon during the earthquake of 1755. This wouldn't be notable except for the fact that at least 5 different eyewitness accounts refer to them stepping uninjured from the debris when no one could have survived. It was hailed initially among the locals as a minor miracle, but the figure was not to be found."
The Nomad likely sought a change of scenery, only to pick the absolute worst spot to do so. Oh well, maybe going back to Germany would be better?
1758: Zorndorf, Prussia
Codex: Notes - The Nomad of Constantinople (Warrior Backstory): "Multiple sources say that a foreign mercenary named Brodyaga of Tsargrad made the decisive difference in the Zorndorf conflict during the Seven Years' War, but it is unclear whose banner they fought under. One account describes this mercenary acting as the immovable center of the Russian lines, but others say that they came late to the battle with the Prussian cavalry."
Codex: Blankbody Designate: Nomad (Traveler Backstory): "Spent some time in Istanbul, Prussia, and even as far as Nepal."
A fun example of two in-game sources lining up.
1760: Seville, Spain
Codex: Book - Historical Record of The Elder known as "The Nomad" (Traveler Backstory): Witness the tale of ibn Khairan, from 1760: "Ever at night they led us through the broken lands, unerringly to the North, untroubled by man or beast. Yet when we reached Sevilla we learned that no other merchants had achieved the journey in a month due to those who preyed on travelers in the mountains."
1789-1794: Paris, France
Phyre: "I was in France during the Reign of Terror. At first, I admired their work. They killed every enemy of the people. And then, they did something remarkable: They made more enemies of the people. And more." -“I am a survivor/Ideals that demand blood,” dialogue options.
Lou: “You'll have to tell me some time how you escaped Madame Guillotine and her... cutting tongue.”
Safia: "Your escape from Paris, from Moscow! You seem the very herald of devastation. Not in a bad way - I mean..."
Safia: "The Black Hand locked you behind iron doors under Paris, and you only escaped the blade by crawling through sewage." -Dialogue files & Dev Diary.
So yeah, the game provides a lot of evidence for the Nomad being in Paris during the Reign of Terror (1798-1794). This is likely where the Nmad came to dislike the French Revolution and its leaders, which leads well into...
1810-1812: Cadiz, Spain
Phyre: "I have escaped wars over the mortal crowns of Spain, England, Poland, Austria." -“I am a survivor/The fight for power,” dialogue options.
Phyre: "I aided Cadiz, when Napoleon invaded after his exile. It was the only city that never fell to him. I spoiled the ambition of a tyrant and... others." -“I am a warrior/Spoiling Napoleon’s ambitions," dialogue options.
Fun fact: This is historically incorrect. Napoleon invaded Spain before his exile, which wasn’t until 1814.
1812: Moscow, Russia
Codex: Letter from Damascus (Survivor Backstory): "After so much XXX, I was worried we might lose the Nomad entirely. But it was unfounded. The tales of their adaptability, at least physically, have borne out. It might explain how they survived the razing of Moscow in XXX."
Safia: "Your escape from Paris, from Moscow! You seem the very herald of devastation. Not in a bad way - I mean..."
The Fire of Moscow occurred in 1812 during Napoleon's occupation of the city.
1853-1856: Crimea
Phyre: "The Russian Tsar waged war on my homeland, hundreds of years after I left. The Crimean War." -“I am a warrior/Defending my homeland," dialogue options.
Safia: "The Black Hand forced you to flee from Sevastopol, your tail between your legs." -Game files.
Home sweet home. The Nomad returned to their birthplace to do some "aggressive negotiations."
c. 1856-1924: Cairo, Egypt
Codex: Letter from Damascus (Traveler Backstory): "XXX identification of the Nomad assumes a voyage from XXX to Cairo. A difficult journey for any of us, but they are known for their extensive travels.”
Now we don't know when they were in Cairo or from where they traveled, but it can be assumed to be more recent, as they were being tracked by the Sabbat who would ultimately capture them.
c. 1924: Tunis, Tunisia
“The last they remember was a smile and a piercing pain in the chest, delivered in their Haven in Tunis at the start of the 20th century.” -Dev Diary.
So we have the place, and Phyre states they were in torpor for 100 years upon awakening, so they were staked sometime around the 1920s.
2005: Damascus, Syria -> Seattle, USA
Codex: Torn Shipping Notice: “FROM: Al-Marwan Gifts. Damascus, Syria. SHIP TO: Artemisia Worldwide. Seattle, Washington, USA. CONTENTS: Semi-valuable antiques. DATE: 06/06/05”
At some point after being staked the Nomad was moved to Damascus, where they were eventually shipped to Seattle in 2005.
2005-2024: Seattle, USA
Experimented on by Safia until they were awoken by Fabien.
Unknown timeframe:
Nepal
Codex: Blankbody Designate: Nomad (Traveler Backstory): "Spent some time in Istanbul, Prussia, and even as far as Nepal."
No info about when they were in Nepal.
Vatican City, Italy.
Codex: Notes - The Nomad of Constantinople (Traveler Backstory): "A pilgrim referred to as Viadante di Constantinapoli was allowed access to the Vatican for research purposes. It is unclear what the reason for their access was..."
No info about when this visit occurred, though it had to be after their time in Charles VI's court, so likely post-1740ish.
Parting thoughts:
So there it is folks! This has been really fun to put together. Please let me know if I've missed any evidence or if you disagree with any of my more subjective placements. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! I'm gonna go touch grass.
