Review Adventure of a Lifetime is a great example of how all-ages moege should be~

After reading ATRI -My Dear Moments- last year, and having it end up in my top 10 VNs ever, I decided that I like Konno Asta. Reading the collab event story he wrote in Heaven Burns Red? Made me realize that I didn't just like him, I loved him. Which caused me to decide to do a full annual marathon of his works where I read one title from him each year, something I do with other writers and companies for different reasons.

So, for him, at first, I wanted to read Kono Oozora ni, Tsubasa o Hirogete (If My Heart Had Wings), his magnum opus?... but seeing how it is a long summer game, and the weather currently is not that hot, I felt like winter would come before I can finish it... so I decided to go for a shorter title.

This is how I ended up deciding to read Sora to Umi ga, Fureau Kanata (Adventure of a Lifetime), another summerge, but this one is way shorter, I can for sure finish it in hot weather, making the experience played out like how it was intended to be played <3 and henceforth, my adventure started~

What I know about this game... is very limited. I know that it is an all-ages moege, something not very promising when I think about my previous experiences, especially PARQUET. But we are talking here about a real writer, not the people at Yuzusoft... he can't end up delivering another half-hearted game... right?

From early on, you will see how it is... quite informative about this specific island, which is a real place in Japan, it delves deeper also about the sea, diving and lots of other things you can do in that place @_@

There are info notes to teach you about lots of real stuff, which always made me feel like this game was an ad... for lots of things. Yes, it was interesting to read about those stuff as someone who is really clueless about those topics, but not enough for me to widen my view and learn more about them online...

I have never seen the sea in real life, even seafood is something I don't like, I ate it only once when I went through a surgery and thought my life was over. So reading about stuff I will never do is interesting, but you can't blame me for not being interested in learning more about something I know I will never do.

The biggest portion of those scenes went into one of the heroines learning how to dive, from scratch. We go with her in this journey and start learning the aspects of diving step by step, it was informative, but not in a bulky way. It still held up well to be fun to read while being as technical as possible.

If I got anything unrealistic/illogical in my head about this game to complain about?... it would be the fact that they could talk to each other underwater without any proper equipment. It is truly not a biggie, I know this game is not something you should take seriously, but when everything else it does regarding diving is quite realistic, you would think they would not miss out on this part.

From a very short research I did (I got gaslighted into wasting my time doing this after the game kept making this mistake nonchalantly...), real divers would either use sign language underwater, or some expensive suits that allowed them to communicate.. both not apparent in this game at all... they could just talk randomly without any real troubles underwater, and it never got explained at all... that was a little bit immersion breaking >-<

The sea is a special theme that seems to follow Konno Asta, or he is the one following it?... an interesting connection between those two, interesting enough to make me, someone who is not a sea-person, start thinking deeply about it... I remember at the ending sections, questioning why humans can't breathe under water, I might have been sleep deprived back when I made this announcement as if I was asking the most philosophical question when 6 years old me would be ashamed of an adult saying this... but the beautiful sea, the deeper you go, the more it feels like you are in a different planet, with a different set of rules, different lives and systems, governed by different logic... I don't even know how to swim, but I really got mesmerized with what the writer introduced with those sections <3

The game starts with a very simple plot, the main characters meet, we start learning about their dynamics, and we reach a certain point quite later in the plot where we see the OP and the game starts for real.

I think you can consider the parts before the OP to be the prologue?... it was quite long, but a very nice prologue! Having the trio become friends, spending time together, sharing their experiences and how different they are from each other. It wasn't anything special, but I appreciate how cozy it was, a true summer vacation experience... I recommend everyone to only read this game in the summer, it is really a different vibe if you do <3

I would advise everyone reading it to wait at least until the OP, the game before it was just introducing its elements, but at the last scene there will be some nice developments that are worth the wait, and the OP is not that late to appear, not that I think anyone is really going to drop this game... Konno Asta is legit amazing at writing female characters, he can make them so fun and unique enough to not make you feel bored at all.

The game has 2 heroines, Emily and Chisa. Both girls are very lovable and close to my heart, and as for picking one of them as a favorite?... I really can't. You don't pick favorites among your children, it is true that if you sat down and thought about it objectively, you could pick one... but you shouldn't, both of them should be loved equally... and that is what I did V-V

Emily, the half-Japanese / half-American girl, is extremely pretty and cute, very nice and a pampered child, but has the spirit of a true adventurer and is ready to put a brave mask on if it means that she could move forward with it. She set off to this island in search of a way to change her life, hating the sea and its creatures, she is now living on an island that feels like a prison for someone like her, being surrounded by what she hates, and her own objective is in the middle of the ocean, forcing her to somehow find a way to deal with her fear and hatred of the sea if she wishes to change her fate.

A simple plot, but you don't find yourself getting bored by it at all, something rare to happen for me when I read moege, I usually start snoozing quite early the second we leave the common route... this is also true for Chisa's route, which was even more engaging.

Chisa is a very lovely girl, your childhood friend, the island mascot who is famous there and even on the internet and TV channels, known as the "Dolphin girl", she got that pet dolphin she named Q-taro (it is the GOAT btw T-T) she rescued it when both of them were young, and now they are best friends. She hates the attention she gets because of that fame, and she also has some deep problems that you will discover later in her route~

The heroines are voice acted by Yūki Takada and Akari Kitō... as visual novel voice actresses? They are literal who's... as anime voice actresses?... even though they are fairly new to the scene, they have done actual roles, and lots of people have witnessed great performances from the few scenes I watched from their anime (I stopped watching anime way before they started having important roles, they have come too late for me ,-,)

I like to see anime VAs work in visual novels... it is always fun to have more VAs instead of the couple of names that always show up in my VNs ,-, I know it also happens in the anime industry, but mixing things up is always more interesting than just using the same names over and over.

Sometimes, they give us some ASMR voice lines, it happens occasionally... and it is super good T-T

How this game handled the girls plots and dealt with them?... it was nothing less than mastery of the work. In both cases, you see the characters deal with their problems very realistically, and the most amazing thing in this game is that the protagonist was not the savior.

Those girls don't need some prince to show up and solve all of their problems, yes he was there and he helped, yes he did matter, they appreciate him for how nice he is and how caring and thoughtful he was, but they still deal with their own problems on their own, sometimes the girls helped each other to solve them, making it a very nice and unique thing for this game.

Konno Asta did something I really don't see in moege, he knew how to make the girls still matter even outside of their route... this game having a main plot that can be solved in 2 different ways depending on the route, without the need to finish both routes to then unlock the true ending, allowed you to view both of those routes in the same importance, making all the main characters performances in them also matter.

When you play Emily's route, you will see Chisa rooting for you to go out with her, and always pushing you into it, it feels weird, I thought some drama would happen later in that route, it didn't feel like she truly meant this, and that feeling I had? is something the writer made me feel intentionally, you will understand why you felt like that later when you play Chisa's route.

While in her route, Emily will be the one pushing you for it, when Chisa shows some restraint to going out with you, Emily will clarify to her that she only backed off from you even though she likes you is because she sees us in love with each other and wants to wish the best for us without being a nuisance, causing Chisa to start taking our confession seriously.

This is Emily, a very straightforward girl who will say what is in her mind without going around the subject or hiding her feelings, in both cases, they will still have screen time in both routes, they will appear, they will matter, and you will not feel like they are a third wheel or unwanted, if anything, you will appreciate their existence. Something not really easy to do and this is the reason why nearly all moege writers don't do it and would try to either show them as minimal as possible or literally remove them from existence.

When you read Chisa's route, Emily doesn't disappear. She is still there, she feels real to the world, she doesn't cease to exist just because you didn't pick her. She will still move forward on her own in such a nice way, she doesn't take away from Chisa's screentime and her being there feels even more helpful to Chisa's route. Same can be seen for Emily's route and Chisa's role in it. That is all thanks to the game having a main plot, and that is to find Emily's treasure, a treasure that can't be found without Chisa's guidance. Having both of them have a crucial role in it allowed them to always be present in the game.

I have to do an honorary mention of the great Chinami, Chisa's imouto... I knew that I would like her from the first second she appeared on the screen... this little gremlin adds so much color to this game T-T All of her bits were funny, and she just brightened any scene she appeared in. Such a fun character to see, this is how you write side characters in moege!...

For a long time in this game, I thought it was just an ad, so it needed to be very family friendly, couldn't have heavy romance and erotic scenes.... but oh how wrong I was... the game had a great amount of romance focus, and each route had some real erotic scenes where you just felt that the writer really wanted to insert an h-scene right there in that exact moment... but he didn't... or maybe that is my rotten brain thinking that after reading tens of eroge ,___,

Those scenes had some spicy CGs, making me sometimes shocked at how this was allowed. Lots of kisses, in both routes. At some point I just realized... this can't be a government project to make a VN ad for these islands..... there is too much erotic stuff here!... unless it is a shared project between both the Kokudo-kōtsū-shō and the Kōsei-rōdō-shō... they want the Japanese otaku boys to go to the island and make some babies!!!!.... with the Polynesian girl, or the half-American girl.... which takes me to another point.

This game actually doesn't have any pure Japanese girls... a weird fact you learn later, both of them are kinda only half-Japanese?.... so I guess if someone is into that, there is a game that provides this very small niche you are in search for!... It is nice to know, I will always save this point in my head so that I can sell the game later with this as something special for it V-V

The romance was very delicious! It was real authentic moege romance, it wasn't a neglected element of the story, and it combines very well with the main plot. The second you leave the common route, the main focus starts going toward the romance, unlike the common route that focused more on the game's objective and teaching you about lots of stuff that are related to the topics discussed in this game or the characters themselves.

This game just proved you really don't need h-scenes to deliver a real believable romance... we get some erotic CGs, we see the characters getting really lovey-dovey, but they don't go over the line, this is a tale of a sweet summer love between teenagers. They are not horny monkeys who will do it at the drop of a hat, they take their time, and more importantly? They act like genuine human beings, especially that protagonist... you don't know how much I appreciated how he acts and how normal his monologues were.

There were tons of situations that I can swear any other writer would've made the whole scene just about the protagonist thinking dirtily about everything, but here? He gets an erotic passing thought about the situation, like any normal human being, but it is a passing thought, it will pass, he doesn't keep thinking about it, he himself sometimes forces it to pass.

He wants to enjoy his time with his friends, he wants to have fun, to laugh, to talk with them, to get closer to them, he is not just thinking about doing it with them, because he is not an animal, he is a human being and humans have rationality, morality, and lots of other self-made systems that distinguish them from other types of animals who allow their instincts to govern them.

You don't know how much I appreciate characters like him, it was such a breath of fresh air to see a male character that is not a disgusting pig who is just filthy, moralless, and only thinking about rape, sex and all other types of depravity that are not fit for those games, breaking all immersion and making me feel like I'm not reading a logical story at all and this is just written to please the otaku reading it.

Even though some scenes were shockingly erotic, it felt like they still had some tact... you know how some anime can have fanservice that feels x100 hotter than straight-up porn?... it is all in how it's done, and this game does it greatly, the smart usage of the correct amount of fanservice just hits the spot.

Yes, those scenes are realistic, logical and don't break immersion, those are positive eroticism that support the scenes, make sense and are fun to go through without making you cringe. Konno Asta is winning my heart more and more... next year, I will read my first eroge from him, it is an early work in his career, so maybe he wasn't the master of today that I know... but I have high hopes that he will do the h-scenes some justice and win my heart even more <3

Some bits in this game made me believe that it got some of the worst localization in this industry. Lots of choices really made me want to pull my hair. I even remember at one point they translated "onii-chan" into a 7-word text. On another occasion, they localized something along the lines of "You are pampering her too much" into "Here comes the knight in shining armor"... at some point, the localization just felt like it was out to kill all the funny bits in the game, the quirks and special dynamics between the characters, all translated into something completely different that does its best to kill how special the writer has made this game...

You know what's weird?... When people question why the average visual novel reader really doesn't want to support any localizing company. The amount of dickheads who get allowed to have a job and end up just ruining lots of games, I need to pay them while they are doing this?.... I would rather see the whole industry cease to exist than do this. I will support the games I like by trying my best to get merch or any type of product that will end up giving them as much money as possible without some other company cutting most of it, purchasing the English versions of visual novels is a joke, you are barely supporting the visual novel makers, and if anything, the only change you are doing is supporting those localizers to keep raping the industry...

All in all, it is still readable. It might be an average work for a moege, but it is sad to see good writing get tarnished in this way, even if it would have been fine for another moege that doesn't have strong prose to begin with.

The OST was fine. I liked the vocal song, other than that? Nothing really hit as hard as ATRI's BGM for comparison. But it was still at a higher level than the average moege, it gave very strong island/sea summer vibes, so it did its job quite well.

The art was surprisingly better than I thought at first. Takahiro Yashima designed the characters, he is an old name that worked on lots of other important Konno Asta games, and the game heroines looked very pretty. They had some unique sprites that I really liked, and the amount of variations was also good compared to how short the game is.

The CGs looked great, I can see myself using them in the future, something I like to do when I avatarpost on other sites, they don't deliver specific things for me to use, but they are fine for general usage when my post is vague.

The chibi art is drawn by none other than the great Makoto Taguchi... who also worked on lots of previous Konno Asta works. His work in ATRI -My Dear Moments- was nice, but I think he did an even better job in this game!... Those chibi CGs looked so good and cute, I even liked them more than the normal CGs T-T

Need to say, playing new games with a functioning engine is a real treat... the amount of functions was minimal, but they made sure my experience was as smooth as possible without any troubles at all. Especially the alt-tabbing thingy when the audio also gets cut... please do that more! T-T

Also, the game uses some built-in animations in such a cool way, for example those fireworks and sea sections. Great way to use technology!

Excuse the review if it felt weirder than the usual, I don't know how to write positive texts for games I like, this is why I usually don't write reviews for the games I like, this review took me way longer than my other reviews to write. I just write very slowly when I try to compliment them unlike the rush of words that comes to my mind when the review is about a kusoge ,-, I really don't think I should write anymore positive reviews... how many times did I write "review" and "write" in this section?....

Anyway, if anyone is interested, I have done a full blogpostation of the game on my Xitter account. There might be some spoilers?... It is a moege, so please go through it with care to not get spoiled, I didn't hide them like I usually do, didn't feel the necessity to do it with the moege plots, so if you are sensitive to that, ignore the thread~

/ourverdict/... a very fun moege to read, something very hard to find, I enjoyed my time with it, I love seasonal games that make you feel the season, and having Konno Asta write it?... it was just a real treat for me <3 ... 7/10~ At this moment, this game is one of the top 5 visual novels I have read this year so far <3

Release Tiny Shadows Interwoven Hearts English Translation Patch (MTL)

Today I made an English translation for a free VN on Steam called Tiny Shadows Interwoven Hearts. The text was translated with GPT 6 Astra, and after testing it myself, I confirmed that it runs properly. I also translated some in game elements such as system prompts.

PS: The developer mentioned in the Steam discussions that an official English localization is already in development, so if you are interested, you can also wait for the official version to be released.

Next, I would like to work on an MTL patch for Hoshizora Tetsudou to Shiro no Tabi, since I was unable to find a download link for any patch listed on VNDB. I also really enjoy this kind of cute and heartwarming game.

Self-promotion After 3 visual novels, we tried making a horror adventure — Otherealm

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/visualnovels!

I'm one of the two people behind Otherealm, and I wanted to share our new game with you during Steam Next Fest.

We're a tiny indie team, and Otherealm is actually our fourth game in The Parallel (诡闻斋) series.

Our first three games were much closer to traditional visual novels. This time, we wanted to push things further and make something that feels more like a horror adventure:

  • Explore a strange school
  • Talk to characters and investigate what happened
  • Solve puzzles
  • Find and use items
  • Complete tasks
  • And, occasionally, run away from things that probably shouldn't be there

The story follows Josie, who wakes up inside a distorted version of her school. The students are there, but something is very wrong with them...

And yes, she finds a hammer.

We're a two-person team, so pretty much everything — writing, art, design, programming, sound, localization, ports, and marketing — is done by the two of us.

Otherealm is part of Steam Next Fest, and the demo is free to play.

If psychological horror, school mysteries, or story-driven VNs are your thing, I'd genuinely love to hear what you think.

Thanks for taking a look! ❤️

Weekly Untranslated Visual Novels Thread - Oct 15

Welcome to the Untranslated Visual Novels Thread where people can:

  • Ask for help figuring out how to read/translate certain lines in raw visual novels they're reading
  • Figuring out good visual novels to read in Japanese, depending on their skill level and/or interests
  • Tech help related to hooking visual novels
  • General discussion related to raw or untranslated Japanese visual novels
  • General discussion related to learning Japanese for visual novels (or just the language in general)

Here are some potential helpful resources:

We have added a way to add furigana with old reddit. When you use this format:

[無限の剣製]( #fg "あんりみてっどぶれいどわーくす")

It will look like this: 無限の剣製

On old reddit, the furigana will appear above the kanji. On new reddit, you can hover over kanji to see the furigana.

If you you want a flair that shows your relative Japanese skill please see this information and set your flair with WAYRBot. We highly recommend that people who can read in Japanese or are making serious efforts to learn Japanese utilize this flair, and feel free to ask in the thread if you have issues setting it.

If anyone has any feedback for future topics, let me know.

Question What are you guys favorite visual novels set in outer space?

• Upvotes

So lately I have been interested in reading visual novels that read like a space opera about exploring the galaxy for a specific purpose.

I remember how way back in the mid 00s, there was a particular visual novel known as Soul Link as I looking back at it now, I feel guilty for missing the visual novel since it looked kind of interesting as I heard it was a romantic visual novel, but I don’t know too much about the story, or how to find it.

Question Is there a lot of yuri and NTR in the sakura no uta + toki games? NSFW Spoiler

• Upvotes

Basically was wondering about this, I read subabihi and it was plentiful there so I wanted to know how extreme sakura no uta and toki were with this. Minimal spoilers plz, as all i know is that most the heroines are bisexual.
