🤔Advice Needed 🍎 🏙 🚕 How do tolls work in NY with a Hertz rental car? Is PlatePass worth it for $45?

Hey everyone!

I'm visiting New York from abroad for the first time and planning to rent a car from Hertz to drive from Manhattan to Niagara Falls.

I'm a bit confused about how tolls work in NY. Hertz is offering me their PlatePass All-Inclusive service for around $45 per day, which seems insanely expensive. Some friends told me it's basically a rip-off.

So my question is: Can I decline PlatePass and just pay the tolls myself? If so, how does that work? Are there any cheaper alternatives, or will Hertz charge me extra fees anyway?

Assume I know absolutely nothing about driving in the US, because I really don't, haha.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: The main reason I want to drive is that there are four of us traveling together (my family), so renting a car actually works out cheaper for us.

🤔Advice Needed 🍎 🏙 🚕 Any french or lebanese or egyptian oriented recs for next week?

I have a relative coming to visit who has done most the main tourism things and also is not interested in most of the things I like to do, so I'm trying to think outside the box. By chance does anyone have any recs for anything related to French, Lebanese or Egyptian culture?

We've done the Brooklyn Museum and the Met's ancient egypt exhibits, and we've been to Albertine (the french bookstore). I'll take all other recs though! Maybe there's a movie playing I don't know about? A talk? Another museum? Stores? A street fair? Anything at all!

Dates would be Oct 17th to 25th.

Thank you!

Day trip recommendations

Hi NYC,

This will be my 2nd time in NYC, previously I’ve visited midtown Manhattan Central Park, Bryant park, Chelsea market, high line, Times Square, The Met, and pretty much the tourist spots.

I’m really looking forward to get food recommendations, my particular interests are Mediterranean and Italian cuisines and things to do.
I’ll also be in Brooklyn for dinner, I would appreciate any recommendations for good spots!

Thank you

Hi there! I (36F) will be coming by next month from the 8th to the 12th and here is what I roughly plan to do during my stay. Feel free to suggest anything or let me know if this looks off or too much/too little! I'm more going with the flow type of gal or last minute make random plans

Sunday (8th)

Arriving in LGA at 8 pm EST and checking into the HI hostel. Will grab some food and pass out

Monday (9th)

Explore Central park in the morning/ early afternoon

Ring making class at Ringram at 1 pm

Hit up Times Square and explore

2 hour night time ferry at 7 pm

Hit up a bar or two after the ferry (depends on what I'm feeling)

Tuesday (10th)

Ice skating at Rockefeller in the morning (9-10 am)

Possibly explore Manhattan Chinatown in the afternoon and try out all the food I can eat

Catch a Broadway show in the evening (given there are last minute tickets. I'm not picky on what show to watch)

Backup in case Broadway goes sideways: go check out a comedy show for NYC comedy fest

Wednesday (11th)

Go to a taping of the Drew Barrymore show at 10 am

Afterwards it's mostly a free day so I'll probably wander about and see where the day takes me

Thursday (12th)

Fly out of JFK to Atlanta to an event for the weekend (magic con) will be going home on the 16th

Backup plans just in case any of the things don't work out between the 8th and 11th (minus the Drew Barrymore show)

Go see the art of manga exhibition in the Brooklyn museum

Go to the Brooklyn bridge

Explore Chelsea market

Go to the Nintendo store and hopefully get a Pikachu plush wearing the statue of Liberty outfit

9/11 Memorial

Thank you!

Bar Hopping Ideas

Hello! My mom and I have a trip planned next week to celebrate her birthday in NYC! We are hoping to do some kind of bar hopping one of the nights. Right now, the plan is to go out on the 22nd, but we are open to change. We are struggling to find a good area to plan our night around! We would love to go to a bar with a live band (rock, 80s, country, pop, we're open to it all!) or anything that would be fun or unique! We are staying in Brooklyn, I think around the Bushwick area. We are open to traveling away from there if there is a good area to go out in! If there's any place that's known for cheap drinks, we're open to that too haha. We are from a boring midwest state, so we are open to all ideas on areas to go!
