Every GTA brings a new benchmark to the table, and I'm worried that 6 will just be "5 but even better" instead of introducing something new.
GTA: launched the entire subgenre
GTA2: gangs, loyalty bonuses
GTA3: third-person
GTAVC: properties with passive income
GTASA: territories, ambient NPC dialogue based on what you're doing/how you look, gigantic map with no load screens in between areas
GTA4: actual dramatic story, play an illegal alien trying to survive vs a power fantasy like the other games, GPS and unique braking/handling performance per car
GTA5: character-switching mechanic, heists with different outcomes and loot depending on player choices, character special abilities
GTA4 didn't really introduce anything new. San Andreas already introduced the idea of more dramatic story (and did it better than 4 did even with having humor). The only thing GTA4 did that was new to GTA specifically was GPS and the idea of having multiple endings.
GTA4 introduced the physics based engine they use today, and that feeling of weight, the per-pixel anatomical force feedback, and the insane shit that would naturally occur because of the interdependent, always-active physics systems on each scene object were all generation-defining.
Minigames aren't new to GTA. SA already introduced the concept. And GTA4's physics are dog shit. Yeah, it's new for GTA, but it ruined the car handling.
It’s such a hard balance bc if I wanted a driving sim I’d just play beamng but I don’t want that in my gta game. I’m a big fan of the arcade me mechanics. I’m not trying to do driving sim, the driving is just a tool in the game and I prefer it to be fun and easy over realistic. But I could be in the minority on this
It really depends on the direction they go because I don't wanna be doing 150mph and running from the cops and I hit a wal or something and it does nothing to my car. That wouldn't make any sense especially with shooting the cops tires and their whole car flipped over in the trailer I'm sure they will make it so driving good is a nessisary thing in gta 6 simply just from watching the trailer.
That being said yeah we don't want it being as realistic as beamng
It's hard to experience now if you've played them both a lot but I remember the first time I played GTAV after having played 4, it felt as though the car was stuck to the road like a rollercoaster to its track. I didn't like it at all at first.
It's admittedly easier to pick up and have fun with immediately, but it has to be said that mastering the driving physics on GTAIV was way more satisfying.
I'm sick of this take. holy crap they were not goated. they were trash. a supercar felt the same as a suv. I was driving boats. GTA isn't a driving simulator and what they gave us on IV sucked ass.
GTA 4 did introduce something new. It had a more serious, prestige-style story that helped set the stage for games like The Last of Us. GTA 4 walked so The Last of Us could run.
A lot of younger people today will never know the impact GTA 3 had on the gaming industry when it came out back in 2001. It was like what GTA 6 will be to modern gaming.
I still feel like IV is a step back from GTA:SA. I was very sad when I saw that we are only limited by the city in IV cause I really enjoyed driving around the outskirts in SA
I don’t think GTA6 is going to be as groundbreaking as people expect. Most of the features I’ve seen arent anything new, and some are fairly shallow like fueling a car that people are praising. I think it will be a huge release, lots of good reviews, ill enjoy it a ton, but I don’t see it bringing any huge changes to the industry or the series.
ive seen people talking about how insane some of these "new features" are gonna be, which are features both gta 4 and 5 had like robbing stores, owning property, entering a variety of buildings, playing minigames etc. Some even saying "in heists jason will pick up every bill there is individually" like bro, we literally saw a cutscene in the extended gameplay trailer where a beer magically appears in his hand, get real lol
With all the leaks and stories and this is what you're worried about? Lmao, they've spent hundreds of millions on just the tech for this game to make NPCs next level. It will be mind blowing, just like back in 2013 GTA5 was, and RDR2 was in 2018.
Actually, more like every 3rd GTA booms big. GTA 3 with mindblowing graphics / world / etc. never seen before. GTA 4 with graphics / engine / physics that are still unmatched to this very day. GTA 6 is the next 3rd one, just saying.
I dont think the physics are unmatched. RDR2 was about as weighty and feels as impactful in every way. And just like gta4, people bitch about it all the time when the game comes up in conversation. It's a big reason they scaled it back in 5. Im hoping 6 adds a bit of that meatiness back, but we'll just have to see.
Not picking it up til it's on PC tho. 30fps feels like shit on any screen larger than a Switch.
Mhh.. You are right. Not sure why I forgot about RDR2 I love the game. In 5 it's said to be scaled back because they had to (well, I mean they didn't haaaave to...) release it on the shitbox era consoles (PS3/X360) which were on their absolute last legs barely alive, as in weak as f... by that time and there simply wasn't enough computing capacity.
I hear you about 30FPS.. I'm worried about that too.. I'm used to playing 120FPS/Hz on OLED in 4K 😂 But I definitely cannot and will not wait. Gonna play in on PS5 Pro so giving it just about every edge I can but yeah.
Character switching in GTA5 was probably their biggest mistake. It’s hard enough writing a compelling story with one main character, let alone three. Final boss was some random corpo that screwed the gang over in the third act. There was no build up to the antagonist like there was in GTA4. I was left asking “that’s it?” after finishing GTA5.
GTA5 didn't really feel much different from the previous ones aside from graphical upgrades (the stuff you mentioned doesn't really alter the game drastically but still added depth). At this point I'm keeping my expectations low but still looking forward to it
Each mainline game at least added or refined something significant imo, aside from better graphics/production value (physics, licensing popular music, etc.) that made it worth playing
Vice City added motorbikes and aircraft
San Andreas had the weapon leveling and the giant map
This is just patently untrue. The leap between GTA3 and even San Andreas is huge, never mind GTA3 to GTA V.
It's massively more than graphics too.
GTA3 didn't even have an in-game map other than the minimap when driving, Claude never speaks, he's never part of any gangs, really, he has no backstory to speak of, there's no ability to influence anything.
I'm not shitting on 6, I'm just worried that it won't be this paradigm shift that the other games have all been. Judging by some replies to this comment though, it does indeed seem like there's a lot to get excited for!
Ah yeah, anyone who even remotely disagrees with this sub is "angry" or some other flavour of word
Clearly didn't read what I said did you? Calling this GTA 5 but better is just factually incorrect and blatantly false, the only person angry is you because I called out a ridiculous take 🤷
You know what I'm not being fair (truly), I didn't consider that English might not be your first language: that sentence isn't me offering an opinion on the game one way or the other, I was just worried that after decades of standout, era-defining titles that the creativity might have started to run dry. Again, not actually saying that it is, just expressing a worry that it might be.
Again look at the replies talking about all the new systems they've included and you can see just how much there is to get excited for so I'm very happy to be wrong in that worry (at least for my taste)!
English is my first language and you can clearly tell it is, save your strawman lol
I read what you said, you're the one implying that 6 might be just 5 but better, you chose your own words I didn't make you say anything 🤷
Why on earth would you ever actually think that 6 MIGHT be 5 but better if you've been following the marketing campaign?? You can clearly tell the level of detail is vastly superior to 5 in every way, it's a non issue
But that doesn't have anything to do with you making a very ignorant statement. You could have taken a minute to look up the differences for GTA 6 instead of typing all that crap out about the other titles to try and make a point that youre ignorant about lol.
